Need Help dont know whats wrong..

Here is my problem:

Out of no where my computer just starts to get really laggy and slow, so i press CTRL ALT DELETE to see whats running. So when i see CPU usage, it says 100%, with only 32 processes loaded, and just 2 mins ago it was at cpu of 0-15%. i dont understand why it would just jump to 100% like that without anything else loading. i also dont know if its a software or hardware problem.

Specs:

P4 2.4 ghz 1mb l2 cache

80gb hd

P4P800-MX mobo

1mb of dual channel memory

What process (.exe) seems to be using a lot of CPU usage. In the task manager click on the 'processes' tab and sort by 'CPU'.

the most used thing is Trillian in the task manager but its only using 24,000 k, which isnt a lot, and even if i close that out it wil still stay the same, i dont know what can be causing this because i checked out all that stuff

Sort it by CPU usage (see pic) and see which process is using more cpu time.

i usually had this problem with opening large .tar files.. Winrar would load for 5 mins at a time and then stop using the cpu and hdd until i start to extract the files.. That happens every time to me and i dont know how to fix it.. Another problem I had was with explorer using 60mb of memory after opening a corrupt video file.. crazy stuff like that happens. when it gets slow, please run hijackthis and save a log file which you can later on post.. If you want as netmasta said, take a pic of your task manager sorted by CPU usage when its 100% and post it with or without the hijackthis log here

Hey guyz,another thing i found is to disable all the useless windows processes that you don't need.

i use to have 32 processes running before and now,im down to 20 and my pc runs alot better and faster

Also, some virus scanners and real time disk defragmenters can also slow down your computer. As I said above, post your HJT log on that site. It it very useful.

you have two firewalls running at the same time.. Zone Alarm (vsmon.exe) and Computer Associates (ca.exe).. Please stop using one or uninstall one so there would be no conflicts.. I think that is the thing that has been causing u problems

im almost positive zone alarm is assosiated or a part of Ez Armor..because when i go to add remove programs there is nothing for zone alarm

that's good to hear.......i just fixed my friend's PC...she's running Windows 98.....she doesn't know what spyware/ad-ware/virus's are.....she had so many virus's....i've never worked on a PC that has been so messed up before.

I ran spybot,she had over 200 problems,i ran AVG,she still had virus's,i ran registry fix...over 200 errors......i used Hijackthis,my god,by far the worst infected PC i ever worked on,took me 2 days to fix......but now it's clean and it's running good.........

hehe.. get her spybot tea timer, resident protection and javacool spyware blaster or spyware guard .. All r automated and easy to use after being configured.. JavaCool's software is easy and I had no probs with S&D resident protection.. Disabled tea timer on my pc though, but I think its still good

have all 3 of them already, along with many others, and every one of them says i have no viruses..but i have been noticing when this problem happens that my hd activity light blinks really fast, not a solid color light, maybe its the hd? that still doesnt explain why the cpu usage would be so high
