  1. comcast 6/384, i use cablenut and custom ccs file. i've posted higher than this, up in to the 10mb range. more than happy with d/l, just with upload was at least a meg, 384 is outdated. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 8191 Kbps about 8.19 Mbps (tested with 5983 kB) Download Speed is:: 1000 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/04/16 - 11:35am Bottom Line:: 143X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 1.02 sec Tested from a 5983 kB file and took 5.984 seconds to complete Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322) Diagnosis: Looks Great : 14.37 % faster than the average for host (70.58) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-FGSPJR1HX
  2. i won't be able to get to his computer for a couple of days, and he's gone till then, and yes, i know about a tracert route, and using j79 to make your own css, but there again, won't be able to give that a try for a couple of days. will see then.. thanxz
  3. Phil, d/l your file and used it in cablenut, no difference, also used higher and lowers css for cable/win98, not much difference, all tests score in the 2.9 to 3.3 mb range, with "cable_fast.css" scoring the highest. any other suggestions? thanxz for input though, appreciated River~
  4. my son's computer is Windows 98SE, running comcast cable, with 6000/384 but his speeds are terrible on download, around 3mb. i tried cablenut and they increased slightly, to 3.3, but it should be more than that. i've ran trend micro virus scan, ad-aware and such, and there were some objects in ad-aware, deleted them, rebooted in safe mode, ran it again, and clean. it's been so long since i've messed around on win98, and i don't recall what all should be showing up in the properties box for the "internet connections" from the control panel. so was hoping someone here who has win98se installed, and hopefully comcast cable can take a look at theirs and tell me what shows up, and related settings for those items. that would be a great help, and much appreciated! thanxz River~
  5. yep, all the time, recycle the modem and reboot when ever i make changes, defrag, all the regular things.

  7. fallowearth, i appreciate the response, and before i downloaded the update i read what i could, but my question is this; are any of these settings i have listed applicable to me, with my non-networking, comcast cable, winxppro, using cablenut, system? i'm sure that after 14 days and 15 nights i might finally get through all of the literature, but i was hoping someone here has the same settings available, and that they know which ones are applicable to me, along with my cablenut settings? or, are all of those settings only applicable to when you are networking? thanxz again River~
  8. a similar post i placed in the General forum, with little response, so hope no one minds that i post here as well. just updated my Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection drivers, and noticed that there is now more selections available in the "Advance" settings tab, which of course most are all unknown to me. hoping someone here has some insight. i am currently running Windows XP Pro, Comcast 6000/384, with CableNut, and csc for 6000/400 with great speeds; dl at 7029/858, ul at 355/43. some one suggested that most of these settings might be for networking, but I am curious as to if any of these entries are something i should be concerned about as far as connection and speed for my application? 1..adaptive inter-frame spacing 2..adaptive technology 3..adaptive transmit threshold 4..coalesce buffers 5..enable pme 6..flow control settings (i recognize this one) 7..link speed & duplex (recognize this one too) 8..locally administered address 9..log link state event 10.offload tcp segmentation 11.pci bus efficiency 12.qos packet tagging 13.receive descriptors 14.retransmit inter-frame spacing 15.transmit descriptors 16.wake on link settings 17.wake on settings your input appreciated, as always River~
  9. as far as you know, are they all for networking? i don't network either, so that's why i'm asking. thanxz
  10. jeffwalker, i appreciate the time, unfortunately your response did not answer any of my questions, which, if you read my post again, i have listed the settings that all appear in my new "advanced" tab.

  12. yea, i wondered about even trying the mcafee, just because of my expereinces with it back with win95/98, but thought why not give it a try and see how it performs, but after experiencing the slow downs and the poor disk performance it was time to go back to the good old tried and true AVG/Zone Alarm, hard to beat these two apps, and their free as well. River~
  13. thanxz for everyone's input.....i changed some of the settings for each of the programs, did some more tests, speed was up to about 4800 for download, but uncached disk speed still was very low. uninstalled the mcafee suite, restarted, installed avg and zone alarm, test speeds are back up to over 6000 on download and disk cache is back to the 75 to 85%. that explains that, and also explains why 12 years ago i uninstalled a mcafee program because it caused some probs. River~
  14. windows xp pro, 1 gig ram, system running cablenut tweak for comcast 6000/384, consistently had high scores, regardless of where i tested at. prior to today i was running avg anti virus and zone alarm firewall, as well as the other spyware/adaware programs. today, because i am with comcast, i decided to try out their McAfee security programs that are free to comcast users. includes a firewall, a security center, virus scan and privacy service. so uninstalled the one set of programs, then installed this mcafee set or programs. cleaned things up and went and did some tests. Wooooh ! what happened? my downloads went from over 6000 to low 4000, and so i went to pit stop just to see if it would report anything, and besides reporting slow internet speeds, it showed my partitions uncached disk speeds had gone from running in the 78 to 86 %, down to 36% on C partition, and in the teens on the other partitions. someone explain to me why, and i'll guess it's just because this security suite from mcafee is just a total all out resource hog. i opened up processes, and there are tons of mcaffee processes running, using about 60,000K..is this the problem for the slow speeds and uncached disk speeds? thanxz River
  15. did two tours in vietnam from 1965 to 1967, navy, on a destroyer (uss rupertus dd851, and uss ozbourn dd846), and two different times we had to make runs up the saigon river and provide gun support for some army boys who got in to some trouble, and while going up the river we took enemy fire, and me and my buddy would call out to each other, "River war" and it just stuck.

  17. CA3LE, last night i tried the test link and scored about the same, shut the computer off and crashed to the couch, slept on it, and this morning i got up and first thing i did was retest, same low scores.
  18. so my tracert looks ok then? i didn't see anything really out of line with it. and here school is still going, another two and a half weeks yet before i have that slow down to take place. prior to this "problem" my speeds were around 4mb down, 382 up with a 4000/384 connection, and usually always way above advertised, and always with the "red hot" symbol at the end of the test speed line, but not any more, and most of the time it has the "red warning" letters, that i am only getting about 80%. tests at dslreports, toast, speakeasy, uc santa cruz all show me getting those older higher speeds, but then i come here and wham, i take a big hit, every time almost. i say almost, because one out of 10 tests will show a good speed here, not as high as in the past, but almost. i run all the anti programs; spybot, adaware, spyblaster, even ms antispyware(giant), and sygate, and avg. update them all the time, run them all the time, normal and in safe mode. i know 100% that i am "clean". just too weird

  20. not sure when it happened, but for about the last three weeks almost every time i check my speeds here, they are slow, and not just a little slow, but seriously slow, running at about 80% of my speeds. in the past, testmy net always scored my speeds around the 90% or higher of my advertised. after testing here and getting slow speeds, i can go to two or three other test sites, and my scores are where they have always been in the past, high. something changed here at testmy net that i didn't read about? thanxz River
  21. this is going to be a good one me think, and i will sit back and quietly watch this one play out in front of me.

  23. only repeating what i've seen posted before, but has to do with several things: line quality, how many users on the "node", your settings, net congestion, to name a few. but guess that if everyone who could fit on your node had perfect settings, good line quality and so on, then they should all at least be able to get 90% of advertised. if the bandwidth is there, but only a few are using it, i would imagine you would have scores well above the 90%. just my guess River~
  24. VB, from the article that i read it talked about how Comcast, way back on day one, would add 300kbps to the advertised caps to insure that everyone got their 90% of advertised, and they just more or less "grandfathered" that 300 in and still to this day they put out 300 more than they say. whether that is true or not i don't know. but if they do give you 4300 on a 4000 connection, then the 90% of that would be 3870, so still getting over cap.
