I'm about 24 feet from it. I'm using a WRT54GS V2 Linksys with the Alchemy third party firmware that allowed me to crank the power up, I run at 80 mw, which requires no added cooling and I have the Linksys hy-gain antennas. The laptop is a HP running an AMD 64 3200+ and the laptop has a built in Broadcom wireless device. I have a Linksys wireless card, but surprisingly, to me anyway, via experimenting I have found the built-in to give me better results. Speaking of results, lately they have been even better. It would not be a lot less. With encryption it takes a hit of about 100 K now. I have gotten hy-gain antennas and use after market firmware on my Linksys WRT54GS. I had used a different aftermarket firmware, but I now am using, Alchemy-V1.0 v3.37.6.8s. It allows me to crank up the transmit power from my router. Before tweaking by getting the antennas and changing the firmware, encryption would lessen my d/l rate by about 250 to 500 K. If I don't run encrypted I use a pretty mixed up SSID and do MAC filtering only allowing my laptop MAC in.

I'm in Southwest Michigan and we pull from South Bend, IN. I have see some independent cable installation contractors running the protective sheathing/piping/whatever (stuff they run fiber through) down a road near me. Now along there I have been seeing a pair of Comcast trucks working their way down the road. What is really peaking my interest is this is now running a block from the node for my area, which as the cable runs, I'm about 2500 feet from. What do you think they are up to? Could this be part of the 10GigE upgrade? The HSI set-up is barely over two years old in my town. I got HSI as soon as it was available and was hooked up 8/19/03.

The higher download speeds help for me on software and media downloads. I have hit some very fast FTP sites. Also I have had multiple downloads going at full speed. For example, I got a linux suite, OS and software, that came on 3 CDs and I was able to DL all three at the same time as fast as the site could pump it out. I enjoy the download speeds getting faster and the rest of the net will eventually catch up. I would also like more than 768 up, I'm sure it will happen I've been in the technology field for 30 years as a career and it always was a hobby as a kid the 20 years before that. I've heard many people say, "That isn't possible...", "That will never happen...", when I was in the Motorola (I worked there) computer club around 79 fellow techs in the company would say, "You all in the club are designing and building a computer with 64K of memory? What will you ever need all that memory for?", and it goes on and on. From ISP people 8 to 10 years ago I was often told high speed was way off into the future, one predicting that "maybe" some people would have 768K down and 256K up by 2006, but it would not be wide spread and you'd have to be 2000 feet or less from the CO. In the ISPs forums I suggested he find other work, he was too short sighted to be a decision maker at any ISP. Mergers and such took care of that. The net will evolve. We will need the faster download speeds, but we will also need more up.

Lately on this site my download speeds were not bad, but not what I usually got. While at other sites they have remained consistent. Been playing with my wireless connection. I used to take a big hit in speed on wireless, but on my Linksys WRT54GS I installed a third party firmware and that is not so anymore. The firmware is called HyperWRT. I'm on an HP Pavillion ZV5405 with built in wireless. Running a secure connection I'm losing a bit of speed due to the encryption overhead. I see the speed difference with a download test, but it amounts at most to 300 to 400 Kbps. With the HyperWRT firmware I was able to increase the router's transmit power from the default 42 mw to 67 mw. It will go to 84 mw, but you should use added cooling then. Now I can sit here in my living room and zoom at highspeed without an ethernet cable run from my computer room to my recliner. Next I'll be playing with extending the range. Wireless: :::.. I had seen that. What I see on a tracert now with the MI long IP is a MI first hop (which is actually in South Bend, IN) and it then hits Chicago and on to where ever. I used to hop right to Chicago when having the Chicago long IP. If I recall correctly the Indy long IP and Indy first hop route went elsewhere other than Chicago before going to where ever depending on what site I'm going to.

Great! I used to have my long IP show that I was in the Chicago area, but now it shows Michigan. c-67-185-248-228.hsd1.mi.comcast.net. That now goes immediately through South Bend, IN which I'm 8 miles from. They did some rerouting a while ago when the Chicago route became overloaded and they had to do an emergency major upgrade. At that time is when it changed for about a fifth time. For a short time I was going through Indianapolis. If I recall correctly the long IP has changed from, Chicago, to Michigan, to Indy, Chicago again and now back to Michigan again. If what I was told by techs in the past, four of those went through Chicago, just not directly when it was/is Michigan in the long IP. :::..
