  2. Cable modems dont allow firmmware updates..(for the most part) Some people have found a convaluted way to upgrade the older Motorolas, but it is not worth the hassle. As far as I know, no one has found a way to upgrade the firmware on the SB5100 yet. If needed, the cable company is supposed to "push" the firmware updates down the cable line. Mark
  3. Yes..Redstone Arsenal (RSA) is right in the middle of town...About 12,000 people work on RSA for different entities of the government I was in the military (Army) here from '84-'88 (Hawk and Patriot Missle Electronics) I was a subcontractor with Northrop Grumman on RSA from '89-'96 ( a job where I would have to kill you if I told you..LOL) I am now a subcontractor with Teledyne Brown ('03-?) working remotely with Scientific Payloads currently on the International Space Station.. As for Talladega...that was my first NASCAR race....A real experience...100,000 drunk rednecks cheering at cars running 200mph around an oval track. Since then I have seen 2 - Daytona 500's.(in-laws live in Daytona Beach) I am not a big fan of watching cars run around in circles though.. cya Bama

  5. FF here and IE for remotely doing work stuff as they are behind the times.... Tabbed browsing and multitudes of Extensions (read Open Source) did it for me. My wife istill wont change..She is still running a VIA 266 witha 1Ghz Athlon. I do computer stuff on the side and could make her machine twice as fast with extra parts in my closet, but she wont let me touch it... Oh well...maybe I will just sneak FF in on her machine and MAKE her use it...She will see the light.. bama

  10. Thanks VanBuren...I will give it a shot... and someday I will get over to posting about my speeds and see if we can tweak it anymore than it already is...(although I am reluctant to d/l SP2 for XP...) Mark
  11. I understood that the limit on the USB adapter was 10Mbs, and then you have to start throwing in overhead plus other devices using the USB functionality... A couple of questions: How do you tell what mode you are in when set to Auto??(HD or FD) I assume that with the NIC at 10Mbs/FD you are definately hurting if you want to transfer things around on your internal LAN... Have you ever thought about trying to force 100Mbs FD and see if your UL or DL speeds increase?? MArk
  12. hmmm...There was talk of adjusting ones NIC to 10mbs Half Duplex to make up fro deficiences in protocols with Cable Modems... All I can say is that routers usually run at 100Mb/s Full Duplex...Do a check on your NIC and make sure it is set to "Auto Negotiate" although with your speeds, this may be an upstream problem.... Mark
  13. Speedy, Thats still a pretty good traceroute, isnt it?? I need tio put VNC on my home computer so I can sit at work and tweak my connection...LOL
  14. Welcome Clarence...(You sure came in with a BANG!!) You guys are making me sick... I can only dream of speeds like that...especially with a price of $49.95... Is there a website that shows upcoming places that Fiber is coming to?? thx Mark
  15. wish I could get speeds like that and not always have that "Congested Link" message... What kind of line are you on Van Buren?? No competing traffic it looks like bama

  17. Hey All, Best place to check the compatibility of your DVD player is here: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers As for media, I use this as it rated very high and the price has come down significantly I realize it is only 4X, but that is the type burner I have http://www.supermediastore.com/prodisc-4x-dvdr-silver-inkjet-printable-100-free-ground-shipping.html As for the rewritables, I bought a 20pk of 2.4x DVD-RW Optodiscs. and they still work fine http://www.supermediastore.com/optodiscfeatured.html I am on my 4th DVD player and that is because this one plays DIVX and Xvid. That is the format that most TV shows are in when you download them off the newsgroups http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000204SWE/qid=1107982308/sr=8-1/ref=pd_csp_1/102-7381141-6312935?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846 Hope this helps Mark bamafamily
  18. currently running Hyperwrt on my Linksys..(2.0b4) Have not installed the latest 2.0 version that was just released yesterday.... http://www.hyperdrive.be/hyperwrt/index.php?page=home-page
  19. Hey All,, Trying to deal with my cable company and their underachieving speeds...I am in the process of trying some new hardware to see if that helps/hinders the problem. I currently have a Motrola SB4100 hooked up to a Linksys WRT54G modem. I was thinking of replacing the SB4100 with either his bigger brother (SB5100) or a Linksys BEFCMU10. Circuit City is running a special that when price matched with Walmart brings the SB5100 down to $34.99 after rebate... Just wondering what your opinions were?? or if there was a better one than that out ther?? thx bama
  20. Is there a way to do a download test from my work and not have it attach the stats to my user account?? or should I setup a seperate account to log under when I am at work versus home?? I dont want to intermix the speed results as they are VASTLY different thx bama
  21. Good Morning All, Just registered on this site..I must say that it is great!! The Speedtests are really good. I have been lurking for a couple of days reading up on Cablenut and trying a few things out at work and home... I love to tweak and it looks as if I have found the right place to chat... TC bama
