  1. hi wyantm06 just put together E510 desktop last night (straight out of the new carton from Dell) and had similar problems, and to remedy them, had to connect to msn for windows updates (3x) and three different restarts and finally, sound worked correctly (video functioned correctly out of the box) for whatever that is worth, sorry don't have more to offer
  2. hi Bird Fan, sorry for the delay in responding, just returned to the home office... is the connection on satout (bottom port of 7000 RG6 connectors) tight? more than finger tight? sorry I don't know much about your system, cannot remember all of the posts I have read... if it has a grounding block, w/proper ground connection to transmitter and ground rod (house ground or equivalent), then one can assume it is not attributed to static charging in transmit conductor, if grounding is suspect, do disconnect (after power down of modem) satout RG6 and discharge, (touch center conductor to grounded surface (house ground), then reconnect and power up... is your signal strength still 10? sorry for the really stupid question, but did you verify your satellite parameters in setup pages? I have seen a 'random' reset of these numbers which gave me a very similar symptom (good signal then suddenly gone...) have you verified your dish mounting bolts are tight (ie if you move the dish GENTLY with your hand, it only flexes and doesn't move?) check signal strength let me know if I can offer more suggestions... ps your pings are great
  3. Hi BirdFan, have seen the same issue a few times, usually related to bad connections on xmit side OR (only in case of 7000) dead xmitter output from modem. (I have spares so testing it is relatively easy for me). And it does seem as if the problem (signal strength 10 after perfectly good signal) has some relation to power cycling, though I cannot say that is the exact problem. You mentioned that your dish may have some movement? Last week, I had a dish which had been functioning perfectly, but suddenly red x's and then lost signal. Reboot did nothing to solve problem. Looking for possible causes led me to dish, it had a very significant movement when I touched it and the signal moved from 0 to 45 and back to 0. So, I turned on the pointed software and had someone relay to me the signal strengths as I 'tweaked' the dish. 5 minutes later, signal strength was 76, crosspol 71 and now it works fine. Oh yeah, the bolts are all tight again too. for whateve it may be worth.
  4. hi fikester are your speeds still about what you posted in december? and if so, did you talk to dway about pointing to another bird? i have heard stories about 6000 to 7000 conversions which went off without a hitch and other horror stories. but, the latter were 'cured' by moving to IA8... or so the stories go...
  5. i have approximately a dozen 7000's which i started purchasing on 'release day' aka september 1 2005. saw awesome speeds on initial install ~1.5mb down/500kb up. since then, the .74meter systems seem to be 'capped' at around 750kb/down and 128kb up. but the service has been very reliable other than a couple of hickups with IA8 recently. Some systems did not notice but my .98M systems were disabled completely until problems at NOC were resolved. all in all, these systems are far better than the suicidal scenario of dialup, which is our only option in many cases... .98 stats today :::.. 7. now that you mention it, i must have been having a rupert murdoch moment. must admit i don't own it, just the dish(es) or parabolic antennas as it were cheers
  8. i too tried voip 'digital voice' and had the same problems, when it did connect. receiving calls was not a problem, but latency was immediately noticed. calling out was much more predictable...1 of 20~30 attempts successful. tried skype over the weekend, going dish to dish (dway) and dish to cable modem and dish to wifi. lower latency going to cable/wifi than dish to dish, but audio quality was very high (using built in mic/speakers on laptop). heard echo back from cable user with external mic/speakers (heard my own statements repeated back to my laptop). in areas with no options, skype over dway works reasonalby well, but cb like usage is required.
  9. i have cable and satellite (multiple satellites due to business needs). cable is considerably faster than satellite and costs less. dsl is great where available. fios is pretty cool if you can get it. microwave wifi is also pretty good. it is really a matter of availability/needs/costs. where I live/work many of our options are either dialup or satellite. or no dialup at all in many of our industrial sites... at home, i use cable due to multiple user requierments and i do dev work on satellite for customers needs. if your budget is not a problem, get the system that best suits your bandwidth/speed needs, of course all of this based on availability. there are other considerations...
  10. Thanks Bird Fan. Understood. Will post 6am results once completed. mountain time zone...
  11. I have been testing skype for dish to dish communication (very remote locations with no other means of voice). Anyone have any experience with skype? Seems to work with the usual latency issues, .3 ~ 2 second delays depending on who is receiving (cable/dsl/wifi etc). Thanks for feedback.
  12. do you mean the .98 system? or the .74. I am unclear as to what the verbage 'self-hosted' is referring to in your post.
  13. thanks for info php, i will monitor over the next couple of days during different hours for some sense of what to expect. have noticed substantially lower ul on .74 w/1IP

  16. Hi php, you seem to be in the know, what can you tell me about the system which I can manipulate to increase/optimize to give predictable ul/dl spds? thanks ps, did read dbirdman stuff and used file for cablenut but seems his system was a 6000?
  17. Appreciate the observation fikester. What exactly does that mean to me as a user? BTW to my knowledge it is a DirecWay system, according to software running on modem (ver 5.0.1.29) thanks for insight
  18. Great Forum: Am a DW7000 user (multiple units .74 consumer/pro & .98 system) all pointed to IA8. Am new to the site and wondering if anyone has a set of tweaks for cablenut specifically for the 7000 pointed to IA8? Testing .98 today and see: :::..
