  1. Do you maybey have an internal graphics card?? That could be an issue. Myself I would say download the latest greatest nividia drivers. Install them then reboot!! Personally when it comes to computers i suggest building your own. Get yourself a "barebones" set up then add harddrives, ram, graphics card, Maybey a floppy drive. Pretty much whatever you want. I think by going with a barebones set up and then putting what you want inside you can get yourself a computer that will last a very long long time. As well if something goes wrong with the cpu or powersupply or motherboard its there problem Not yours. I built my first and got it from here Mabey do a reset to default on your bios? If you are not sure how to do that just ask Short personal note. See dlewis I got it. Thank you again! dlewis just got done teaching me how to turn a single word into a link to a website.
  2. Ok. Gonna give it a shot. See if it works and I understand how to do it. Thank you for the help sorry if I was a pain. okfine clickhere Well isnt that just super cool. I knew I was missing something simple.
  3. Again. Sorry. I must not be explaining myself right or we are simply not on the same page. How do I myself put that code into the post I am writing? Can I just copy and paste the address the put in (url) before and after the address and that gives me the code needed? After the code is put in how do I turn it into one simple word. I know it has to be easy. I am sure I am missing something simple. I will get this. I will understand it darn it. My mind is set. Gonna learn it. While I apreciate your help. I need someone to tech me how to do it myself. Thank you.
  4. Sorry dlewis. For some reason I don't get it. Do you type in the post some type of code ?? Then after you type in the code how do you make it "the word" you want it to say and link it to site you want it to. Example. I want to put a link in a post that would direct the reader to this web site........http://www.lvllord.de/. I just want to type in "you can find the patch" "here" The "here" word providing the link to the website.
  5. Yea swimmer. How did you do that??
  6. I have seen how some can put a word in a post and when you click on it it takes you to the website. Example I would type the word "speedtest" and if you click on it it would take you to say testmy.net download test. I was just wondering how is that done. I mean if its a long complicated have to understand how to write script then never mind. If there is a simple easy way of doing it that would be a cool little trick to learn. Thank you all much.
  7. After my gf saw that picture she felt the serious need for a smoke. Wonder why??

    Safe mode?

It apears from what I understand you want to save the instalation you have if at all possible. I have no idea what you have and have not tried. Did you try to put the xp disk in and go for a reapir install? It simply reinstalls xp and leaves all the other stuff alone. That should repair all the issues. I have myself Tried to save programs already installed on the harddrive and as of yet had no luck. You as well could have a serious nasty virus or trojan on the hardrive that is creating havoc with programs and files already on the disk. Its my humble oppinon that you need to erase the hardrive and start from square one. While that may not be what you really want to do, it apears to me your are fighting a loosing battle. I hope that helps..
  9. I saw someone was gonna do a faq thing. Well Here are a few ideas of mine. Copy and use what you want. 1. What are my advertisted speeds and how do I find out what they are. Just run a download test here at testmy.net and read the results. There are other ways but that is the by far the easiest and quickest. 2. What is "cablenut" and "hijack this" and what do thoes do. Thoes are some "geek"toys and I strongly suggest new users leave them alone. 3. My connection speed seems slow now what?? First thing to consider. Are you hooked to the internet through your cable company? If so you have a cable connection. You are not the only one useing this connection. Others users "share" your connection with you. Your speeds may be faster at nite and slow in the day. Second scan your computer for virus and spyware in safe mode. How do you do that. Ask in the forum. We will give you a step by step instructions to do so its really easy. 4. What is "tweaking my connecton". For new users Stay away from it. Do the scans for virus and such first. There are guides that can help you "tweak your connection" if you really think you must. 5. Before any "tweaking" consider this. Tweaking can be a long hard process to do . Is waiting a few extra seconds or minutes for the download to finish worth all the time and effort it will take to "tweak your connection". I personlly have seen others completley screw up there computer and have to erase there hardrive and reinstall windows xp. If you still want to try to "tweak" your computer or your connection there are help files here on testmy.net as well as ask in the forum. 6. I will never undestand this stuff I am not smart enough! WRONG!!!!! Most of us "geeks" did not learn this over nite. It took years of reading. Asking questons and learning. Alot of us are really not "book smart. We just had the desire to learn computers and got our degree from the school of hard knocks. 7.I have read and still do not undestand it. Ask the forums. 8. I want to ask in the forums but I feel to stupid. YOU ARE NOT STUPID!! If you ask a question and you still dont understand ASK AGAIN!! We will always do our best to help. If ANYONE makes fun of the question you ask I promise thoes that run this website will be all over that. As well as the other users. Makeing fun of someones question as geeks call it "flameing" will never be tolerated no way no shape no form no how. When asking for help do your best to describe in detail the exact problem you have. Be honest and do your best. If you changed some settings on your computer and things are messed up TELL US!! No one will "flame" you for it. We will do our best to help you get your computer back to normal. 9. I asked a question and 2 diffrent people told me to do 2 diffrent things. Now what? That is gonna be up to you. There are diffrent ways to fix the same problem with your computer. Give it some thought and do what works best for you!! What seems to be the easiest and quickest for you? 10. How do I know that the person helping me is right? Thoes good people that run this site as well as alot of other users know there stuff. They do this for a living. They keep an eye on everything going on in the posts as well as the help that is being given. If they see anything that is just wrong or not right they will jump in and correct the help. 11. Virus and Trojans and Spyware and Adware. Why should I worry about it? First off Virus and Trojans and Spyware and Adware generally speaking are the same. They are stealing you some of your connection speeds. Makeing your connection slower. 12. I am really not haveing problems with my computer but I still do not understand some things. Ask away!! 13. I saw something in the forum or someone responded and I am offended!! Consider that was not there intention. We can all say things at times that others may take wrong. No one wants to offend anyone on purpose. 14.Rember the help you ask for and the help you get is a "best guess" based on what you asked. We are not sitting in front of your computer. So do your bet to explaine the question the best way you can. Include what you have already tried to fix it.
  10. I really figured I would get holy heck for the post. I am truly impressed not only did I not get holy heck but it made some stop and think. Myself included. What set me off was something I did. I was posting a responce to a user who was having issues with there harddrive. While my son was looking over my shoulder I simply responded to the user.....Reformat the hardrive. First my kid asked me dad...whats reformat mean. After I told him his responce was ....dad why did you not just say that instead. He was right and I assumed way to much. After some thought and some looking at other forums I had my kid....Who knows NOTHING about computers sit beside me and read some help others were giving. 90 percent of what he read he had no idea what they were saying. The links to other pages I find just make things worse. Generally speaking new users are easy to get frustrated and they will give up in no time. I think personally It would be cool to put a FAQ page for new users. I will bet in no time a list of 50 or more definitions and such can be compiled. While speaking "geek" can be a hard habit to break I forsure need to break myself of it.
  11. ALEX VEIGA Associated Press LOS ANGELES - The operators of the BearShare online file-sharing service have agreed to pay $30 million to avoid potential copyright infringement lawsuits from the recording industry, according to court documents filed Thursday. Free Peers Inc., which distributed the BearShare software, also agreed to close up shop and not operate any unlicensed online music services. A federal judge must still give final approval to the terms of the settlement. Free Peers was one of seven file-swapping software companies to receive letters from the recording industry last fall warning them to shut down or prepare to face lawsuits. Since then, the firms behind i2Hub and WinMX shut down. The Grokster file-sharing service, which was sued by a coalition of Hollywood film studios and recording companies in 2001, agreed last fall to pay $50 million to settle that copyright infringement case. The operators of four file-sharing services - Warez P2P, Limewire, eDonkey and Soulseek - have yet to shut down or settle. The firms behind two other major file-sharing services - Kazaa and Morpheus - are defendants in a copyright infringement case pending in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. As part of the BearShare settlement, Free Peers agreed to sell their technology, rights to the BearShare domain name and data on users of the software to a subsidiary of iMesh Inc., which used to distribute file-swapping software until 2004. The New York-based firm reached a $4.1 million settlement with the recording industry and relaunched last year as a licensed music service. The company said it had been in talks to acquire BearShare "for a while," but declined to disclose financial terms of the deal or how it plans to use the BearShare assets. Calls left after hours to the Miami-based attorney for Free Peers was not immediately returned Thursday. In a statement, the Recording Industry Association of America, which represents the major recording companies, credited last year's Supreme Court ruling in a file-swapping case for paving the way for the settlement. The high court's decision opened online file-sharing companies to potential liability, ruling that if they were found to intentionally induce or encourage the theft of copyrighted works, they could be held liable.
  12. Of late I have been seeing a increase in way to many "geek" terms used. To many responding to other posts in terms and words that person May not understand. I am just as guilty if not more so than others. I am not here to throw stones and slam everyone for being to much of a "geek". I write this in hopes of changing things a bit and getting those wanting and needing the help, The kind of help that is useful and easy to understand. Remember when you first sat down at a computer for the first time and turned it on. Did you understand what "bandwidth" was. Did you understand what "advertised speeds" meant. It just seems that if you would assume that a poster is in the same spot you were the first time you turned on a computer the help that you give can make a world of difference. Try to put yourself in there place when helping. What in the world do you mean by "booting into safe mode" How do I "boot into safe mode" Instead of asking "whats your advertised speeds" Ask them to run a download speed test and tell you how fast they are downloading at and at what percent does it say your speeds are. Instead of simply telling them to "tweak" there settings or run cable nut Explain as well how to set there settings back to the original xp default settings. Do your very best not to make them feel like they are not smart. Remember always that at one time you sat down for the first time. Turned on your computer and it was cool but confusing at times as well. Try not to make it so complicated to understand and fix. I remember seeing a post how someone using firefox could not get video to work. I about fell down at some of the responces. Keep it simple. Give them the link to the plug in for "ie tab" When they want to see the video. Right click on the tab and click on "switch rendering engine" The page will reload and there is the video. Don't make them jump through hoops by installing this software and that software. Keep it simple. It is just my humble opinion that we are turning into geeks helping geeks. Instead of the way I think it should be. Geeks helping the average user. When you tell someone to "back up there registry before applying the tweaks" It would help if you would explain how to back up the registry first. Remember good people. Those looking for help are trusting us to give them the right information. The easy to understand help they truly want and need. Personally I just hope this post turns into a sticky. Maybey others can reply and explain some of our geek terms and what they mean. Lets try not to scare the average user away, Lets try to help them in terms they understand. Most of us geeks had to learn computers the hard way. Trial and error. Some of us may not be "book smart" Or have a college education. We got our education from the school of hard knocks. We are simply here to help. Lets not let ourselfs turn into geeks who confuse the average user. Let us become geeks who help the average user. Sorry for the rant. Feel free to delete this post if you wish. This rant was not just at this forum. I have seen it time and time again in other forums as well.

    Safe mode?

With all due respect to swimmer I just don't agree with the partition Idea. While it does sound like a great idea and such I can just see it creating alot of issues. The 2nd partion is a just another handy spot for nastys to hide. I can see some average users haveing some problems with it. In stead of takeing care of just one operating system you now are takeing care of 2 at the same time. Keep both updated. Keeping both running right. Rebooting to get to the other partion. Its my humble oppinion you should back up your harddrive to a dvd. Make a simple restore disk. Now I think a guide to make a easy to use restore disk would rock. Just put the disk in the drive and it restores your computer to a previous state. Useing some programs to do that can be tough for the average user. Xp restore that is already there is just unreliable and can not be trusted. My last thing is yea a 2nd partition is nice. What happens if you loose that harddrive. Harddrives do fail. No offence swimmer. I mean all this with due respect. I just humbly disagree. For whatever its worth.
  15. I like vlc for movies and I really like itunes for my music.

I have done that once or twice. Taught me to back up my computer useing ghost. I did a fresh install of xp. Put on all the "must have programs" i wanted. Used ghost and backed it up. As I found programs I wanted to keep. I would download the program to desktop. Zip it up and back it up to disk. To this day I keep a running back up of my programs. Save them all to cd. Not trying to rub salt in the wound. Just trying to help from haveing this issue again.
  17. Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door! Have we forgotten the country was found and established by immigrants? I guess that sign on lady liberty simply doesn't apply anymore.
  18. Styling themselves as political activists, a Massachusetts group has launched a concerted effort to inveigle Internet Explorer users to switch to the Firefox Web browser. The focal point of the movement is a site called ExplorerDestroyer.com. In addition to talking up the strengths of Firefox, the site highlights a new Google AdSense program that offers $1 to online publishers for every referred netizen who downloads Firefox. In a letter posted on ExplorerDestroyer.com, the group identified itself as "four friends" and said that Firefox is one of the most important software applications in the world as "it can play a big part in determining the future of the Web." According to the Firefox Four, the serendipitous announcement of Google's Firefox referral program has set the stage for the open-source browser "to take back the Web." Get Under 50 The group is urging online publishers to attempt to shift the balance of browser power in favor of Firefox by reducing the number of Internet Explorer hits to less than 50 percent of all browser accesses. "Your Mission - Get Under 50," the site states. Beyond merely offering a great deal of rhetorical flair, ExplorerDestroyer.com provides free scripts that Web site developers can employ to encourage users to switch from Internet Explorer. These plug-and-play scripts can detect if visitors are running Internet Explorer and can present pro-Firefox messages. The messages range from "gentle encouragement," amounting to big banners posted at the top of a page, to "dead serious" alerts that will block users from entering a site unless they first install Firefox. Even armed with the $1 AdSense incentive, the group might be waging an uphill battle. A recent Forrester report on Web browsers found that Internet Explorer still dominates -- by far. AOL follows IE in a distant second place, with Firefox, Opera, Safari, and other alternative browsers scrapping for what is left. Great Strides Although the report concluded that Firefox has made "great strides," with well over 100 million downloads in a little more than a year, few survey respondents indicated they were likely to switch their primary Web browsers. Forrester discovered that core browser functionality looks the same to most users, which prevents them from becoming "excited about new browsers." At the same time, built-in security features that could help users differentiate between browsers face competition from standalone products such as Norton Internet Security and Webroot Pop-up Washer. Vulnerabilities discovered in Firefox and Opera over the course of the past year also discourage users from switching from Internet Explorer. According to Forrester, Internet Explorer's dominance and the corporate world's desire for stability have slowed innovation among Web browsers to "a crawl." The report recommended that browser builders "stop navel-gazing and innovate." I personally can see opera gaining more and more ground in time. Firefox is turning into evrything most hate about IE. Firefox has issues with security same as IE. As populairty grows so will the exploits that target firefox. Just my oppinion.
  19. What in the world is up with all the firefox spam. Google and FIrefox have hooked up in hopes of getting more users to use firefox. Sites are starting to show up like this one [snip] I have not seen it as of yet I here some sites will not let you in unless you have firefox. Of course they want you to install that stupid google toolbar. I hate toolbars and refuse to install them. Looks like google and firefox are teaming up to shove firefox down the throat of everyone they can. Sorry. Thats just wrong and no beter than bill gates garbage. Firefox Is gonna turn off users and people will go in search of other browers like opera.
  20. I just dont think people in general would be real crazy about hooking up there computer knowing that the service is comming any where near a power line. Even if it was explaned I still think most would want to avoid it.
  21. Rom Has GOT to be the (King Or Queen) Of finding some of the most incredible stuff on the net. I think There has to be something ROM is unable to find. So lets see Rom Looking for software to convert Music to Ringtones and I want it free.........GO!!
  22. Ok Lets start over again ok. 1. The copy of xp you have is it legal and the full version of xp not the upgrade version of xp? 2. Did you completley whipe you harddrive clean with a 3rd party software? If not do that. 3. When you put the xp disk in you see a blue screen that says its installing the drivers and such at the bottom of the screen. Then xp asks you which drive to install on and offers the option to format the harddrive. You want to let xp format it for you. Use the quick version. Once it installs for awhile then it will ask you for your key. There will be 5 boxes and you type in the activation key. Should be letters and numbers. I have never seen or herd of xp rebooting after the key is installed So this is a first for me. Give this a shot and let me know.
  23. I am getting ready to dive into the opera browser. I messed with it about 6 months ago but go so frustraged trying to get it set up the way I wanted it I gave up. Is there a link someone can give me for a begginers guide to customize it? I did look at operas community with no luck. I even googled it. I do use firefox and maxthon. Both were pretty easy to customize. Thanks all.......
  24. I assume you are just useing one harddrive. I would look into a boot manager as well. Sorry you will have to google that one. I really dont know that much about them. Use your program to partition the way you want it. Install lynix. Then install your boot manager when you boot up. I think acronis comes with a boot manager. I think that would be your best bet. www.lynix.org may be a place to poke around for more information
  25. You are not giving much information. What error message did you get when you tried to re install xp. You should be about to wipe the disk clean. Put xp disk in your cd rom. Reboot the computer and xp should install. Now if it is not booting from the cd then you need to change your boot options. Reboot and hit f8 to change your boot up options. Choose to boot up from your cd rom first. Now If it is booting up from your cd rom ok fine. What error messages are you getting. Trying to help. You need to give more information.....
