  1. I figured for 50 bucks it was worth the risk of not getting any better speeds, although for me it paid off. I do have the static IP so maybe there is something to needing the static IP to get the better uploads. I'm pretty sure my dish is the .74m dish because I started out on the basic consumer account.

  3. I recently upgraded to a 7000 and did not have to re-point. I am currently on G3C. I am also getting 1 meg down and about 150k up on the pro plan. It is working much better than my 6000 on the same bird, so I'm not sure I'd agree that if a 7000 is not pointed to IA8 it works like a 6000.
  4. I've had my 7000 for a couple of days. Uploads are much better. I've seen uploads over 200k. :::.. Upload Stats ..::: Connection is:: 179 Kbps about 0.2 Mbps (tested with 579 kB) Upload Speed is:: 22 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Sat Nov 19 21:27:39 EST 2005 Bottom Line:: 3X faster than 56K 1MB upload in 46.55 sec Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 237.74 % faster than the average for host (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-PV6879O5A I was usually in the 20's and 30's on the 6000, with occasional spikes in the low 100's. I'd post a download but I can't get an accurate test here right now. I've had this trouble before and it seems to clear itself up after a while. Previous tests have shown more than a 100k improvement. I'm on the professional account with a static ip.
  5. Yep. And Direcway is like a double bogey.
  6. A lot of WB users are seeing pings between 550 and 700 ms.
  7. ThinkDiff89 I'm on the same sat you are and I'm getting good speeds just about all day (1000 down/25 up). When I say good I mean good for a dw6000. The first step to getting good speed with dway is making sure you are getting a good signal and your cross pol is setup right. The xpol (receive/transmit) on your sat should most likely be vertical/horizontal. I hear occasionally the installer can get these reversed and has to force the xpol to pass. This can greatly reduce upload speeds and can harm your equipment. After adjusting hardware, you just need to make sure your hard drive is clean, defragmented and you are free of viruses and spyware. Since you are on a mac, I don't know if registry cleaning applies, but that is a must on windows machines. Registry tweaking can work (on windows anyway) but seems to be a crap shoot as far as how much it helps. Unfortunately, I've known people who have just never got good speeds from dway no matter what they do. Good luck.
  8. You want to make sure you configure your internal network first and then get your external (internet) connection working. Once the two pieces are functional, you should then be able to install and configure your firewall software of choice, unless you know how to configure iptables yourself. Firestarter seems to work fairly well also. Good luck.
  9. Spaceway launch is scheduled for 2006. DirecTv did use the two new sats launched this year for HD, which at some point were going be used for Spaceway. I have not heard any plans to delay the launch of Spaceway past 2006. As far as WildBlue is concerned I'll have to wait until they have a significant number of customers before I can recommend them. So far so good, but the speeds being posted now are best case scenario and I don't think we have seen the worst case yet.
  10. If go into your advanced screen and select setup and then Antenna pointing, it should show you your elevation, azimuth and polarization. This should at least give you a place to start. I'd start out a tick or two higher than the elevation says and work your way down from there until you get the best signal. Then you can adjust your dish left and right, if need be. You most likely won't need to mess with the polarization. Remember to wait about 3 seconds after each "minor" adjustment. As has been stated your direcway dish is very sensitive. You are aiming for a signal about the size of a golf ball. http://192.168.0.1/fs/advanced/advanced.html Good luck, stay away from the transmitter and don't let the FCC know what you are doing.
  11. Looks like amc9 has a good footprint in Florida so you should get a great signal. I think business class direcway is the best bang for the buck. Unfortunately, direcway has greatly oversold their bandwidth, but you are much more likely to get some bandwidth on a business class account than a consumer account. I do experience slow downs like everyone else, but for the most part I get better than advertised speeds for my account (dw6000 professional). Good luck.
  12. The first advice to give about adjusting your dish is that it is illegal in the U.S. to adjust your dish yourself (your direcway dish is a two way communication device unlike your tv dish), unless you are qualified to do so. Direcway may send someone out if you can convince them you have a problem. If you do attempt to adjust it yourself, mark where your dish is now, adjust up/down then side to side and then the tilt or skew. Stop for about 3 seconds at each minor adjustment you make to give the signal time to get to your dish. Don't stay in front of the dish for very long if your transmitter is on.
  13. You definately want to wait at least a few months after they go nationwide and see how the speeds shakeout.
  14. Yes, definately give your vpn client a try. Hopefully you have one that doesn't require a static ip. I believe it is the NAT that is the problem with some clients, not the dhcp.
  15. My vpn would not work over my consumer account. I had to upgrade to professional. The professional edition has a static ip address, which is the key to getting most vpn clients to work. Some vpn clients will work without a static ip address. Bottom line is you'll need a vpn that doesn't request a static ip or you need to get a static ip address, which may mean upgrading to professional. It's probably worth asking if you can get a static ip address for the account you have now.
  16. I upgraded from the consumer to the professional package and I did see an increase in speed.
  17. To get the most out of Direcway make sure you do the following. Defrag your hard drive and keep it that way, 1% or less is the target Clean your system (includes cleaning your registry, eliminating spyware and viruses) Apply any operating system tweaks you can find that you are comfortable applying Set up browser proxy as mentioned Tweaking your tcp settings can help.
  18. Crispy Niggets, Not sure if this will help but your receive and transmit polarization is horizontal and horizontal. Usually this is vertical and horizontal, although this is not always the case. You may want to verify your cross pol is supposed to be set this way. If your cross pol is off it can have an impact on latency. Also, I think you are on satmex5 which is dways most loaded bird. It wouldn't hurt to ask to be moved to another bird, although your chances of being moved may not be that good.
  19. Since I don't hate dway I had to pick the only other alternative. I get better speeds than advertised and I don't normally experience the major slow downs that a lot of others do during peek hours.
