  1. Meh, I came from Comcrap's basic 12 Mbps/2 Mbps package (used to be 6/1), so I expected more.
  2. I did that already Unplugged A/C for 30 sec, plug back in. Didn't help. I guess it's network congestion on Verizon's end. ::::::::::.. 3. A week ago, when I just got FiOS, I was easily able to get over 20 Mbps on speed tests and real-world file downloading. Now, I'm only able to get 16 Mbps at MOST in speed tests and downloads. I tried turning off all the STBs in the house, and there was no effect on the results. I've also tried rebooting the Actiontec router, and release-renewing to get new IP, nothing helped get my old speed back. I've been using the same PC, so that's not a variable. I've also not installed any new programs, soo... What's wrong?
  4. I solved the problem already. It seems that on the wired PCs, the AV I installed on them auto-updated and somehow re-enabled Windows Firewall, and set it to block everything. I simply turned it back off, and I was able to access the wired PCs from wireless correctly.
  5. What the title says. Basically, after I switched to FiOS, and was forced to use the Actiontec router, I was unable to access any wired PCs from wireless. PCs on wireless can ONLY access other PCs on wireless (laptop to laptop works, pings work, Remote Desktop works, etc). However, if I try to access a hard-wired PC through any of the wireless PCs, it fails (pings time out, remote desktop does not work, etc). I REALLY need to get this to work, because I have a central PC I hard-wire to the router as a server with loads of large-volume Hard Drives in it. I have NOT had this problem at all with my WRT54GL when I was on cable. But I can't switch out the Actiontec and replace it with the WRT54GL since I also have FiOS TV. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

  8. I believe the speed drop activating security is due to the overhead added by the security.
  9. Sorry for bumping old thread, but it seems that I might be getting "PermaBOOST" again. I'm on the 6 Mbps tier, and I'm getting consistent 12 Mbps (1.5 MB/s) speeds on everything (including torrenting Linux). I get "PowerBOOSTed" upload up to 420 kB/s, and then after ~10 MB of uploading the file, it drops to 250 kB/s exactly (which converts to 2000 Kbps, or 2.0 Mbps). I was pretty sure that it was another PermaBOOST "bug" in the PowerBOOST system, but maybe not anymore, since you mentioned that the tier is getting an upgrade. If so, I guess it's a response to the rapid rollout of FiOS But I'm upgrading to 20 Mbps/5 Mbps FiOS next week, so I probably won't know if this speed is a permanent upgrade, or another PowerBOOST "failure" fiasco. I've uploaded a screenshot of a Fedora torrent going consitently at 1.5 MB/s all the way (started off at ~2.5 MB/s at first, signs of PowerBOOST, then dropped to 1.5 MB/s, and stayed there).
  10. True, but DD-WRT is the most mature project out there right now.
  11. Alright cool. I was worried about it, because none of the "guides" online mentioned it.
  12. Which is what I did. After each upgrade's reboot, I checked to make sure the Web GUI worked, and they did each time. I did hard resets each time, and each time it did the Power LED indefinite blinking thing. I had to power cycle to get rid of it each time.
  13. Woops, I double posted. #EDIT: Btw, screenshot showing DD-WRT loaded on my router: I censored some stuff (like IP, MAC address, domain name, etc). I renamed the "Router Name" by accident, so I had to censor that too.
  14. WRT54GL v1.1 But it's obviously not bricked. I THOUGHT it was bricked. I knew the flash at least worked, because I was able to enter 192.168.1.1 2 minutes after the flashing, and I saw the DD-WRT Web GUI. Repeating what I said above, at that point, I wanted to do a hard reset like in the tutorials (hold down reset for 30 seconds with a pen/pin, and let go), and that's when the power LED kept flashing. I did a power cycle (unplug a/c, and plug back in), and the router worked again (it flashed for 15 seconds, and stopped).
  15. DD-WRT v24 SP1 installed on WRT54GL successfully... sort of.... Here's how I installed: 1. Factory reset inside web interface of Linksys firmware 2. Upload dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin 3. Got upload complete, and waited 5 minutes 4. Did another factory reset (this time on the back of the router, held down reset with a pin for 30 seconds) 5. Ended up with power LED blinking indefinitely..... (So at this point, I was like oh SHIT I might have killed my brand new WRT54GL) 6. I unpluged router's A/C, and plugged it back in. Waited for the "Power LED blinking" to stop (it stopped in 15 seconds). 7. Accessed 192.168.1.1, root:admin, w00t it worked! I saw the DD-WRT config page. 8. Went to administration, and upgraded to dd-wrt.v24_std_generic.bin 9. Waited about 10 minutes after that (it went to DD-WRT main page automatically, but I still waited while it already said the firmware name text on the top of the page). 10. I finally decided to do another factory reset via Pin, and bam, same thing happened as before. So I did same thing as before. I did the final factory reset with the web interface before I started configuring it. Seems to "work fine" now. Yeah so... what caused the indefinite blinking? Obviously the router didn't die. And it barely feels warm.
  16. Yep, D-Link sure does things right. I don't know why USR can't do the same. Oh well, I'm sticking with D-Link's DI-624+ v1.23 firmware. It's damn stable: wireless has been connected to it for 2 hours without any issues, whereas with the latest USR firmware, I kept getting random router resets every 15 min to 30 min when I had a wireless PC connected.
  17. Well, probably not many people still have it; if I had the money, I would have gone with the Linksys WRT54G/L a long time ago, and replaced this thing.
  18. I bought a lemon router (USR8054) about 4 years or so ago, and just a week ago, I google'd for an unofficial firmware to make the router more stable, and this thread intrigued me: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,10995316 However, I found that it was posted in 2004, and the thread had closed since 2005. I wanted to do the mod yesterday, but the link to v1.15 was dead, and google was no to avail. However, the good news is that I found all the necessary files somehow, and I decided today to put together a "kit" that will help other users like me successfully convert their lemon into something at least worth using without spending $50+ on a new Linksys router. I've attached my kit with detailed instructions step-by-step in the "Readme.txt" file. I hope this helps you guys. Enjoy. P.S.: I couldn't find the right section to post this in, so I decided the best would be the General section. #EDIT: I forgot to mention that I did successfully follow the exact procedure I mentioned in my kit, except I went from v1.15->v1.19->v1.23, and not directly from v1.15->v1.23. It should work either way, though. I'm liking this firmware already better than USR's.
  19. Oh cool, so it's easier than on cable
