slow speed and uneven browser speeds

My original problem was speed testing at pcpitstop:

IE6  2950kps

firefox 1.5  1100kps

opera 8.5 400-800kps

These speeds were achieved after optimizing for 3.0mb cable connection using TCP optimizer.

To level the playing field I have changed my settings with cablenut and tested again at testmy.net, here are the results.

OS Win 98SE

cable connection 3.0 mb down and 300kps up

have installed all registry tweaks for win98 from speedguide

have changed settings with cablenut

First I tried Vanburens version 7 for win98 cable +1500

Now using Vanburens version 8 for win98 cable +1500

This is from speed guide

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500

MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460

Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which equals MSS.

Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240

RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits

Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 64240

RWIN is a multiple of MSS

Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:

513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)

256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

64240 (MSS x 44) <-- current value

bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your TCP Window limits you to: 2569.6 Kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms

Your TCP Window limits you to: 1027.84 Kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 55 hops

TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 01011100 (92)

Precedence (priority) = 010 (immediate)

Delay = 1 (low delay)

Throughput = 1 (high throughput)

Reliability = 1 (high reliability)

Cost = 0 (normal cost)

Check bit = 0 (correct, 8th checking bit must be zero)

DiffServ (RFC 2474) = No valid DiffServ equivalent. See the TCP Optimizer documentation, or RFCs 2474, 2475, 2597, 2598, 2873.

No, the win2000 css file didnt change anything, so I looked at your file.

I changed the RWIN to 128480 with cablenut but at speedguide it showed something like 65 thousand something I forgot to write it down.

So I changed the RWIN with TCP optimizer to 128480 and my speed slowed down.

If it is a faulty cable (between your comp and modem or modem to wall socket) you can inspect and change it to a new one.

If it is electromagnetic interference, you need only to reposition your modem and signal cables away from other electrical devices. I notice your ISP is providing Cable TV as well. Make sure you do not place the modem on top of your TV set with signal lines running down the back of it. Reposition the modem below the TV so that signal lines can branch out along the wall at floor level.

I really appreciate your help.

When I ran the original tests on pcpitstop I was using Zone Alarm firewall and getting

2950kbs with IE6 and much slower speeds with opera 8.5 and foxfire 1.5.

Someone told me to switch to Sygate, so I did.  All of the speed tests above that I did at testmy.net were preformed with Sygate personal 5.6

I got rid of the firewall and retested with RWIN 256960 and 128480.

Without any firewall my IE6 speed is 3.1Mb and opera and foxfire are both 2.1Mb so part of the problem was with the firewall but now I am now back to the original problem of firefox 1.5 and opera 8.5 being slow browsers and I really dont like IE6.

My first 2 hops were 6 and 8 ms.

Any suggestions about the browsers and maybe a firewall?

Have you install the patcher to change concurrent Tcp connections from default of 10 to 50? You can install the patcher here:

http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=tools&PHPSESSID=89e182258e07f2e142af1f7e8701287e

To speed up FireFox, this thread may be of help:

http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-11556

As for Opera, they recently have a new version 8.52. You may also adjust number of concurrent Tcp connections at Tools>Preferences>Network>...

The thread on firewalls is :

drifter0000;I'm not sure if this will help you but check these links.I wrote them for dial-up but I would like to know if the settings are in the same location for a cable modem.

I think some of the tweaks will apply to a cable modem they are for 98.

I use Agnitum Outpost for a firewall.I had Sygate at one time but it started messing up so I switched & haven't had any problems.Its free if you just keep the trial version(no time limit ) If you upgrade you get support & a few extra features.
