stark21 Posted March 6, 2006 CID Share Posted March 6, 2006 not sure if I have this in the right spot or not but right now I have a webstar dpc 2100 series cable modem and I am supposed to get 10 meg and 800 upload but I am at about 5-7 meg right now and have been for awhile. I was thinking it was the modem cause I have try changing all settings and to no avail. so the question is would the Motorola 5120 or 5100 be a better modem. thanks for any advice
brock01 Posted March 6, 2006 CID Share Posted March 6, 2006 what was the speed of your old modem?
Ryan314 Posted March 6, 2006 CID Share Posted March 6, 2006 What internet service provider? just curious.
coknuck Posted March 7, 2006 CID Share Posted March 7, 2006 I have the same modem (webstar dpc 2100 series) and I could only get about 3.2 Mbps. then I played with a lot of Van's settings and jumped to 5.9 Mbps on a 2992 kB test now I get 4.5-5.1 Mbps on the 5883 kB. So play with cablenut setting by Van they work.
stark21 Posted March 7, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 7, 2006 the ISP is Prolog www.ptd.net the modem is supposed to be caple of atleast 30 megs but of course I don't have that kinda of speed lol.. what's odd is my ping times avg 31ms so I am good there and uploads are find just my downloads tech guys are coming out to the house again with there laptop to test some things so hopefully they can see if it's the modem or something out. GlocknLoad Posted March 7, 2006 CID Share Posted March 7, 2006 If you're getting a new modem, make sure it's a Docsis 2.0 version, streams voice, data and media better.
stark21 Posted March 7, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 7, 2006 just got the Motorola SB 5120 called cable and ISP with the new MAC ID and when I connect the cable line and the other lines it goes through the normal process then when it's done it just flash the power light even but the other lights are all solid green. not sure what the problem is unless cable company hasn't updated with the new Modem Mac ID

stark21 Posted March 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 8, 2006 yeah I have tried multiple of things and I think the problem is I get dumb pauses that cause my speed to drop if I didn't get the pauses I would be at 9 to 9.5 meg from my 10 meg connection. FallowEarth Posted March 8, 2006 CID Share Posted March 8, 2006 The first hop is a bit high (should be <10). Are you using ethernet or USB? Power levels look ok...SNR is a bit low, but not critical. I like to see mine >39.
stark21 Posted March 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 8, 2006 using on board ethernet not sure if I got a new ethernet card if that would help just odd since I just can't figure out those pauses but if that latency is high is there any way to fix that or is my latency good
FallowEarth Posted March 8, 2006 CID Share Posted March 8, 2006 Try forcing the duplex to 10/half. From device manager, right-click your NIC and select properties, go to the advanced tab, and set it accordingly there. Then reboot your PC, run another traceroute and another speedtest. stark21 Posted March 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 8, 2006 I have 10T base and 10T/Full duplex as options do I just select 10T base and of course the 100 meg one too but I just listed the 10 meg selections
FallowEarth Posted March 8, 2006 CID Share Posted March 8, 2006 Nothing that says Half Duplex? Then I'd just go 10baseT, yeah.
stark21 Posted March 8, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 8, 2006 ok here are the results with just 10 meg select on ethernet. speed seems to work this time around but I will do a couple do see if its stays around that. FallowEarth Posted March 8, 2006 CID Share Posted March 8, 2006 That's looking better, 1st hop is still a bit high though. Have you tried a different ethernet cable? Otherwise, It may be in your interest to get a PCI NIC before you see that resolved, if you're really worried about it. It could be that your onboard NIC gets hot when your computer is running for a while. Try turning off your computer for an hour or so, then try another speedtest and traceroute. Other factors that could cause this are electromagnetic interferences from other devices in your home. Basically anything that is electrical emits a field of energy that can affect how other devices within the vicinity operate. Try separating your cable modem from any other electrical devices by about 3-6 feet if possible, and see if the 1st hop of your trace is any better after that. Otherwise, software and running processes on your PC can cause your speedtest to be lower. Try eliminating startup processes that you don't need. Turn off your firewall, real-time protection, IM's, and any other downloads when you are performing a speed test to see best results. Also, play around with a few different cablenut settings, from VanBuren's custom files, and see what works best for you.
