TASKS: You are responsible for knowing A NOTE ABOUT PROTRACTOR. The protractor is fairly easy to use with two potential problems. The first is that you do not line it up on the bottom but on the line (putting the vertex of the angle inside the tiny circle in the middle). The second is there are two sets of numbers. The outside numbers are to be used if you are measuring from the right and the inside numbers if you are measuring from the left. Just notice where zero is when you line things up and follow that track around to the other side of the angle. |

Internet Practice for Determining if Two Triangles are congruent.

DIRECTIONS: Copy triangles, mark congruent parts, and write down the rule. ALSO write down the correspondence, For instance Triangle ABC is congruent to Triangle DEF (do this in symbols like it was shown on the board).

If you did not get at least 10 done in class Today, you will need to do some more tonight. Submit whatever you do BUT ALSO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE WRITTEN WORK. You can work in pairs but make sure both of you have the written work.

HW/CW: p. 233 1-8,14,15, 18. Be sure to READ and follow directions. For 1-8, each “proof” should have:

- the picture
- marked as given
- several sentences explaining why you know the answer.

See the examples on page 232-233 if you are not sure AND READ THE DIRECTIONS IN THE BOOK. See example of what an answer should look like here.

You may need to READ PAGE 232 and CHECK THE HINTS IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK (p. 755). Many of these require you to draw an auxiliary line (line #5 we did in class) or seperate the triangles like the example on p. 232.

MORE ON THE PROCESS FOR HOMEWORK:

- Start by drawing picture and marking parts – EVERYONE should have this for each problem – no excuses!
- Think about what two triangles you want to try to prove congruence – re-draw triangles separately if necessary (sometimes triangles overlap)
- See if there are any common sides or angles that also should be marked and do so
- Read hints in the back of the book
- Prove the triangles congruent by a rule and then state why the “missing parts” are congruent by CPCTC

Extra Credit over break. On a seperate sheet of paper, create examples of PAIRS of triangles that follow the four congruence rules (SSS,SAS,ASA,AAS). The triangles (angles and sides) should LOOK congruent – don’t get sloppy! Each example should say “Triangle ABC is congruent to Triangle XYZ by SSS” (whatever it happens to be, symbols better than writing the words).You should also do an example as to why AAA and SSA does not always work (AAA is easy, For SSA make the corresponding angle marked in both an acute angle. The in-between side should be longer than the far side. To make the two triangles different make the angle in between the two sides acute in one and obtuse in the other. See #2 from worksheet last Wednesday as an example!). |

Vertex Angle Bisector Conjecture: “In an **isosceles** triangle, the **bisector** of the **vertex** angle is also a **median** and an **altitude**“ (Draw a picture of this)

Equilateral/Equiangular Triangle conjecture: “Every **equilateral** triangle is **equiangular**, and, **conversely**, every **equiangular** triangle is **equilateral**“ – How many degrees for each interior angle in an equilateral triangle?

Suggestions: Read through warm-ups, Read through Chapter 4, Look at old quizzes on the internet, Have an online chat with someone about Triangle Properties, Make flash cards, SOMETHING!! 10-20 minutes of extra study will result in 3 or 4 correct questions (a letter grade!) that you might have otherwise missed. THE TEST IS ONE TIME ONLY – NO RE-TAKES. Come prepared.

If you need more explanation, read the pages leading up to these exercises **here (note: address changed!** , Classpass is MrTGeom3

NOTE: In #2 they are NOT asking you to do chart 1 over again. They are asking for the measure of a SINGLE interior angle in an EQUIANGULAR polygon of n sides. So for a five sided polygon, the total degrees is (5-2)180 or 540 and a SINGLE angle would be 540/5 or 108 degrees.

Make sure you get the correct answer to #1 and #2 from our guest teacher before you leave.

P.S. Teacher MAY request that YOU turn in YOUR PAPER by the end of class if you are not working.

**Friday Nov. 31 **

For both the practice quiz and the work in the book, it MIGHT be helpful to know that the EXTERIOR angles of any polygon sum to 360. This means a single EXTERIOR angle for a regular polygon is 360 divided by the number of sides (angles). For instance a regular decagon has exterior angles of 36 degrees each (360/10). IN ADDITION, you can use that information to figure out the INSIDE ANGLES. For a decagon, the inside angle is 144 (180-36) and the TOTAL degrees inside is 10 times 144 or 1440.

Practice Quiz over interior and exterior angles of a polygon. For a class grade. **Write down the questions and the answers. **

HW/CW: p. 263 1-11 (Copy all pictures and proof). – When you are done you will have 21 problems done – 10 from the practice quiz above and 11 from the book.

For number 4 in the book, remember the sum of the interior angles is (n-2)180 so 7380=(n-2)180. From this you can figure out the number of sides.

**Tues Dec. 4 **

After doing first part of warm-up, you may want to look at this link to recreate a parallelogram, rhombus, square, and rectangle to make conjectures about the properties of the diagonals.

Worksheet, guessing the properties of quadrilaterals.

EXPECTATION: You should already know what a parallelogram, rectangle, square, rhombus, isosceles trapezoid, and kite is. If you do not, look them up!!!

OUR GOAL: Know what makes each quadrilateral unique and use those properties to find missing measurements of angles, diagonals, and edges.

**Wed Dec. 5 **

Practice Quiz. MAY look like this. For EACH one, draw a picture AS YOU DO IT. You will not get full credit if you do the pictures AFTER you get the answers. By end of class tomorrow, should have twenty pictures AND KNOW THAT YOU HAVE THE CORRECT ANSWERS. **Be prepared to ask about any of them you are having trouble with.**

If you have twenty done when you arrive to class tomorrow, you can do a second time for extra credit.

More Logic Puzzles – Using the back of the worksheet from yesterday (or on a separate sheet of paper), look at several of the puzzles on the link below. You should do this in groups of 2 to 4. For each puzzle you look at, write down what time you start, what time you figured it out (or gave up and looked at the answer), a brief description of the problem, and a brief description of an answer someone came up with. NO ONE IS AUTOMATICALLY GOOD AT MATH OR PUZZLES – we get better because we stick with them, try different things, and practice. The ability to sit and think about a problem that does not initially make sense is the sign of a mature, independent thinker.

Extra Credit:

On a seperate sheet of paper, create a test with 10 ORIGINAL problems where two of each of the problems came from each chapter in the book (2 from chapter 1, 2 from chapter 2,…2 from chapter 5). For each problem, **write down the page number **that inspired the problem. They do NOT have to be multiple choice. At the end of the test, create a key with the correct answers.

IMPROVING YOUR GRADE: Make sure you read and do this before the end of the break!

“What can I do to improve my grade?”* First of all, it’s a little late to be asking this question. But it’s not the last week of the semester which is entirely too late.But for now here are a few things you can do: - Did you do the classwork and extra credit assigned on the Thur/Fri before the break? Do this.
- Do you have quizzes or tests from when you were absent that need to be made up? Come in at lunch or after school to take them.
- Have you used a late homework yet? If not, find an assignment you didn’t do and turn it in. 10 points is about 1%. It’s a start.
- Did you get 15 or higher on all of the quizzes (7 or higher on the 10 point quizzes)? If not, pick the lowest score and start practicing that one first. Come in AFTER SCHOOL the first week we are back in January. You may re-take any or all of these quizzes that week (except for Wed.). YOU WILL
**NOT be allowed to re-take these the last week of the semester**– I will not reward poor planning. - Do you know all the vocabulary? It’s extremely difficult to do well if you don’t know what words mean. Go through the book (Chapers 1-5, 8) and read the words in
**bold**and any of the boxed definitions/conjectures. If you don’t know them, make flash cards to learn them. This might be one of the best things you can do to help you on the final exam and for next semester. Getting an A or B on the exam shows me what you have learned and**might**make me re-think giving you a D or and an F.
* Are you certain your grade is “safe”. What if your grade drops between 2 to 5 points from now and the end of the semester. Are you still okay? If not, go back and read the information above – don’t wait until your grade needs fixing. Do some preventative maintenance now! |

LATE-BREAKING EXTRA CREDIT: This is something brand new you might like. The Khan Academy is a tutorial service that allows you to watch videos and then practice what you watch. This might be especially good for some of you who need to review your algebra skills. Register here then follow these instructions to add me as a coach. CHALLENGE EXTRA CREDIT: On a separate sheet of paper, show how you can combine the parts of the triangles and rectangle that form to make a trapezoid to get the formula for a trapezoids area (similar to example I did on the board with the kite)

**Fri Jan. 4 **

Finish yesterday’s assignment. Once you have all of the pictures done you may do it a second time IN CLASS for up to 10 extra credit points. For the second attempt, pictures are not required (but often useful!).

HW: (Assuming you don’t get it done in class) read pages. 449-450 in book. Remind yourself of Circumference and Area formulas for a circle. (You do not have to do the investigation on p. 449 but **please read it**). Book is here (note: address changed!, Classpass is MrTGeom3

Make sure you can answer questions 1-8 on p. 451. These will show up on the test. Answers are (in RANDOM ORDER – pi represents the pi symbol) – 9pi in^{2} , 0.8 m^{2}, 1.7 in, 36pi in, 49pi cm^{2}, 3 cm, 0.5 m, 7847 m^{2}. (You may also want to look at tomorrow’s warm-up).

Cheat Sheet assigned – due on day of practice exam (Tuesday)- this is an assignment but can also be used during the exam. Failure to do it shows that either you are a genius who already have 101% or that you totally don’t care what you get for a grade.

The Quiz from yesterday is the ONLY thing you may re-take after school this week. You’ve had many weeks to re-take the other ones. It’s now too late. If you want to re-take yesterday’s quiz, you must do so today or Thursday AFTER SCHOOL.

NOTES ABOUT THE VIDEOS AND QUIZZES:

It is possible some of the check boxes or input boxes may appear in the wrong place on the screen. Do the best you can to figure out what matches to what. The quizzes between the videos are simply to help test your understanding. You should take a guess, check your answer. If it is incorrect you might try again – but don’t spend forever trying to get the right answer – it will be revealed on the next video.

If you don’t think you need to watch the explanation after the quiz you MIGHT choose to skip it but there is sometimes important information here (and jokes!).

**Second Set of Videos (Volume and Surface Area) should be done outside of class.**

For these, you can get **extra credit** IF on a separate sheet of paper:

1) Take Notes – this is somewhat open-ended but you should have at least one fact per “Setup” video. You MIGHT have notes for some of the explanations.

2) Provide answers to quizzes. Can include these within the notes.

3) Take this quiz provided at the end (bottom of the table of contents).

Even if you choose not to do the extra credit, you need to watch the videos if at all possible – especially the last 4. We will be doing a project in class related to this.

**Thur Jan 10 **

In-Class Project – Proving the doubling effect.

**NOTEBOOKS DUE TOMORROW. **You need to go through and number your warm-ups. Each one should already have a date on it. Your first one for this quarter is likely dated 10/22. Simply Write a 1 by YOUR FIRST ONE, a 2 by YOUR SECOND ONE, and so on. If you have 22 warm-ups it should be number 1,2,3…22. If you have 30 warm-ups, it should be numbered 1,2,3…30. Beside the very last one (THURSDAY) Write TOTAL: and the number of warm-ups. 34 or more warm-ups is 100%. They are worth 3 points each. Every one over 34 is worth 1 point of extra credit. Have your notebook numbered and ready to go at the start of class tomorrow. If it is not ready at the start of class it is late (10 points off for late and 5 points off for following directions). **If it is not ready by the start of class Monday, 50% off.** ALSO – **MAKE SURE YOUR NAME IS ON the first page and the last page!!**

**Notebooks due. First warm-up was on 10/22. Make sure they are numbered and with your name on the cover and the last page. **

**Classwork** if you are done with work from yesterday. Possible **homework** if you are not. A different way of looking at Surface Area and Volume – try THIS. Basic idea: COUNT the cubes for volume. Count the squares ON THE SURFACE for surface area. You have to “count” the ones you cannot see as well.

If you do not get at least 17/20, try again at home. Submit every try. I will count the highest score.

**Super Extra Credit if you are done with everything else**

Review of Angles! Complete this link and SUBMIT when done. If you do not get all 20, attempt again and re-submit. I will take the higher of the two scores.

Practice Exam – this will give you a sample of the types of questions but not as many as usual. **Bring your completed cheat sheet for points.**
