tony evans Posted June 28, 2006 CID Share Posted June 28, 2006 I am currently living in Bangkok Thailand and the internet connection from here to the U.S. is quite slow. A 2Mb/512Kb connection on average gets me about 35KB/sec. I need video conference to the U.S. I do not know if a two way video connection requires simultaneous upload/download capabilities using seperate pairs of wires for transmit receive or if it is a shared connection using a single pair of wires for transmit/receive. IN OTHER WORDS... should I look for a ISP with a high upload and download speed (2Mb/2Mb) or the fastest possible download speed (4Mb/512Kb)? Anybody know? Please help!!!! tommie gorman Posted June 28, 2006 CID Share Posted June 28, 2006 Welcome to the forum tony evans. You can get (2Mb/2Mb)? That would be sweet. I would think that would work great!
dlewis23 Posted June 28, 2006 CID Share Posted June 28, 2006 tony evans welcome to the forum. if your doing like a 1 on 1 video conversation 35kb/s upload would be plenty. the thing that would hurt you is the latency and packet Loss. what are your ping times to the US like? tony evans Posted June 28, 2006 Author CID Share Posted June 28, 2006 Thanks for the reply, I do not know my ping rates but I can tell you that when in conversation with someone the U.S. and I speak a quick sentence, I can usually get an echo back to my own computer, of my voice speaking, within about a second. So that is a round trip of my voice to their speakers and back. So the latency isn't too bad. Know any good sites to ping that wont time you out? I could give you a better answer. sparky Posted February 17, 2009 CID Share Posted February 17, 2009 goto a command promt and type in the following ping testmy.net you will get a bunch of numbers and it will give you an average, let us have the average. you may also want to ping yahoo.com and again, post the average, it will show you if your dropping packets. you will see something like this...
