Sharky2006 Posted August 26, 2006 CID Share Posted August 26, 2006 I am big on freeware but I have not been able to find any program that prevents index.dat from re-creating itself. Is there any way to get this done? Freeware? Manually? Batchfile? I would really appreciate it.

Sharky2006 Posted August 26, 2006 Author CID Share Posted August 26, 2006 This is regarding deleting index.dat....I thought I was clear Anyhow, if it is required for IE not for Mozilla firefox so why would there be a need. Anyhow I have been able to delete it, I just wanted to find out if it is possible to prevent it from being re-created.
php Posted August 26, 2006 CID Share Posted August 26, 2006 If you don't use IE then there won't be anything in it anyways, no?
MYRIAGON Posted August 26, 2006 CID Share Posted August 26, 2006 Yep.Swimmer and php are both correct. If you delete them (more than one on XP) it will always recreate them upon reboot, but it does erase the info that was there. It will only add info. back if you use IE again. I use a program called ultra wipe (old program) everyday just for deleting index.dat files.
FallowEarth Posted August 26, 2006 CID Share Posted August 26, 2006 Can you make the file read-only?
Sharky2006 Posted August 27, 2006 Author CID Share Posted August 27, 2006 I downloaded ultra wipe and ran it but on re-boot it did not allow explorer.exe to execute. I had to run check disk in safe mode which replaced the cluster. Never using that again.

php Posted August 27, 2006 CID Share Posted August 27, 2006 Can you make the file read-only? I doubt that would stop windows from doing anything...

Swimmer Posted August 27, 2006 CID Share Posted August 27, 2006 Can you make the file read-only? I am sure that on a reboot it would correct the permissions.. The wikipedia states that If you update to IE7 you can remove it.. I dont know what that means or if it is accurate.. but i guess it would be worth a try if you are willing to use RC1 for a little bit.
