etherealremnant Posted December 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 There's not really much of a reason to test upload right now if you think about it. Everyone knows Comcast could provide at least 3Mbps upload on everyone's connection. Why test something they already know they're fully capable of? lol
Blunted 2 Posted December 14, 2006 CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 if they can do it then why dont they? i dont think they can since the fastest teir they have is 16/1 and its only in areas with fios around. comcast is only docsis 1.1 which i dont think it can do those speeds
etherealremnant Posted December 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 DOCSIS 1.0 is capable of 10Mbps upstream. You really only need 2.0 if you want higher upstreams than that. Comcast CHOOSES not to offer higher upload speeds, its not that they aren't capable of them.

dlewis23 Posted December 14, 2006 CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 Comcast CHOOSES not to offer higher upload speeds, its not that they aren't capable of them. they do that so people wont be able to run a very good server off there connection. etherealremnant Posted December 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 You're right on that. But most of the nodes out this way are 2-4 splits and the way I understand DOCSIS specs is that they're able to deliver 10Mbps to the node. I'm not so sure that they aren't upgrading to DOCSIS 2.0/3.0 though. I don't see how else they can plan to offer 30+ in the near future unless they do. That is unless there is some way they can bind multiple 6MHz bands together to form a larger overall stream. They've dropped 3 analog channels here recently, which frees up some extra bandwidth right there. I'm not going to worry about it either way though. I'm honestly quite happy with 8Mbps and a stable internet connection. I could be stuck on Qwest phone lines with crap DSL so I'm quite content with what I pay for. etherealremnant Posted December 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 they do that so people wont be able to run a very good server off there connection. Yeah, I never thought about that part. They're said to be one of the worst when it comes to people trying to run a server off of their network. I don't run servers so I don't worry about it. etherealremnant Posted December 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 That's what I found too... but unless Comcast already upgraded to 2.0/3.0 and didn't say anything, I broke that 30 cap tonight when I was grabbing at 4200KB/sec. etherealremnant Posted December 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 I posted two results from Speakeasy and I also explained that none of the dslreports servers even catch my powerboost speed. I'm not posting any more evidence for you. I know what speeds I am getting. I know I'm not just powerboosting for 3 or 4GB at a time and I know what I was told by Comcast when I called to question why my speeds were so high out of fear I was going to get accused for uncapping my modem. I'm done jumping through hoops but just to appease you, here's a dslreports speedtest using the Net@ccess server (which is nowhere near Colorado): Horrible. That's the only one that's not saying its busy every time I go to test. Using a Sprint site here in Denver: Your Results: 10,171 Kbps Download Size: 995,974 bytes 1,271 KBytes per second Download Time: 0.77 secs Testmy.net is the only one that seems capable of even handling powerboost, much less anything else. Blunted 2 Posted December 14, 2006 CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 yes they can easily handle it dslreports.com speed test: 23120 / 3795 (Kbps) (2822.3 / 463.3 KB/sec) Compared to the average of 567 tests from optonline.net: * download is 127% better, upload is 90% better
etherealremnant Posted December 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 Cool. Coming from Colorado, I've never gotten good results above 6Mbps. And I'm not continuing this argument.
etherealremnant Posted December 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted December 14, 2006 Now that I got Megapath working: Its also kind of not fair to test on Optonline considering that you've got servers closer than 900 miles away to test on....... Last Result: Download Speed: 13986 kbps (1748.3 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 705 kbps (88.1 KB/sec transfer rate) Another Speakeasy for you. gotmilk Posted December 15, 2006 CID Share Posted December 15, 2006 Well, if he says he works for Comcast, I believe him. Sure, I'm still a bit skeptical, mostly because of powerboost and 768 upload, but I believe him for now. What kind of uploads are they planning on offering with that 30 Mbps package when they release it to the public? 896 Kbps?

BigRooster Posted December 16, 2006 CID Share Posted December 16, 2006 TW and Comcast are sitting in a tree together. Seems like both of them, especially TW, think 512kbps or 768kbps is enough for home use. But at least this thread shows a hint of proof that Comcast is thinking about the future (download wise). Adelphia upgraded my area to Docsis 2.0 over a year ago (maybe even longer), and now... I'm stuck at 8/512. Ugh... at this point I'd rather pay $30/month for 3/384 DSL but I can't get it. Good luck to those of you who get the faster speeds.
