granpa Posted August 13, 2007 CID Share Posted August 13, 2007 Thanks granpa ill haft to check it out. I live less than a mile from the tower, but there is a damn hill in the between. Sence ampd went bankrupt i got a blackberry world edition with verizon but to bad smartphone/pda dont have rev. A im stuck with rev 0, but i get pretty decent speeds i guess. I have a question on the dbm is -81 better than lets say -97? What I have been told by support (phone call to 3G) is that adding the antenna is only to pull your signal in at your end. The transmission power on your end doesn't change and does not go out the external antenna so you still need to be in the best location in your home also the higher the better. The towers are using equipment much better than we will to receive and transmit, unless you can spend the money and then you would have a T1 line. Also a signal of -60 would be about the best you could get
justinlay Posted August 14, 2007 CID Share Posted August 14, 2007 Today while i was driving to work I passed my tower by my house. i was like 30 feet from it and the best i could get was a -80, and even went out alittle ways it stayed there for about 3 miles then started to go up. So i need to do some research on this phone and see the best signal strength i could get out of it
tommie gorman Posted August 14, 2007 CID Share Posted August 14, 2007 WOW, right under the tower. Can't get much closer than that. Good luck with it then.

If you look at the antenna they are usually set up in an array, maybe 6 of them and each has there own directional area. Much research is put into the design for the coverage area unlike original antenna Tommie wanted to use in his first desperation for signal gain.

carltonsteel Posted August 14, 2007 CID Share Posted August 14, 2007 it all depends on what kind of wireless equipment the company uses some equipment is better than others. thus meaning some have better dbm than others
justinlay Posted August 27, 2007 CID Share Posted August 27, 2007 Ok i got a question? On my Blackberry 8830 on the top right side by the signal bar it shows network im connected to. Ok my question is what is the difference between 1xev and 1xEV. I know when i leave EVDO area it goes to just 1x. Its like im home now its always been 1xEV and right now its 1xev. my battery is sitting at 85% so its not that. Do yah have any ideas?? I don't think any changes would be necessary unless you want to experiment. It takes a good deal of time, make a change and work it for a while. I think sharing a connection with cell phones (Vision) makes a constant variance. Also location may make he difference, some areas may get into the mainstream easier. Also there is probably a cap on just what throughput you can get so nobody runs wild. Your signal seems a little low. I checked mine with my daughter's laptop since I don't have one and found it to be around -70. Using the Linksys router/Pantec500 card I can move it around for the best connection and network from there. I also run these tests after a through cleaning.
