Flippperbw Posted February 17, 2005 CID Share Posted February 17, 2005 Hi...this problem has been bugging me for about a week now. Here's the little story: about 2 weeks ago I wanted to try testing my speeds. At the time, I had winxp sp1. Through all the different tests online I had an average of 1 mbps down and 900 kbps up. This continued until I started trying to make things faster, when I finally got up to about 4 mbps down and 1 mbps up. That's awesome! I thought. About a week later, I ritually checked the speeds again....and whoa...about 5 mbps down but like 180 kbps up...for what seems like no reason! I didn't make any drastic changes.... Anyway, I reinstalled windows (for other reasons too) and dled SP2. The first thing I did was check my speed....6 mbps down, and 200 kbps up!!!! I don't understand what happened to the upload speed????!! And technically on a brand new system.... So now I'm running winxp sp2 (I dled the p2p fix...and set the connections to 99, was that good?), with optonline.net as my ISP, but I really don't know how to check my advertised connection speed....any help on that as well? VanBuren Posted February 18, 2005 CID Share Posted February 18, 2005 do you have a router, if so bypass it and connect your PC direct to cable modem, if you use USB between your pc and modem, change it to ethernet instead, USB slow down alot VanBuren

VanBuren Posted February 18, 2005 CID Share Posted February 18, 2005 try this Flipperbw update your NIC driver, also set your NIC to 10 Mbps half duplex quote from http://dslnuts.com/tips_tricks.shtml "Windows 2000 or XP: to change to half-duplex: * Open Control Panel. * Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections. * Identify the icon for your cable modem connection: usually Local Area Connection. * Right-click that icon and select Properties. * Under the ethernet adapter icon, click the button Configure. * Click the tab Advanced to bring it to the front: * In the Property box, the property name to be selected varies according to model of ethernet card. Examples are: Network Link Selection, Media Type, Connection Type, Duplex Mode, or any similarly-named property which can have Values looking like Auto-Negotiation, or 10BT, or 10BaseT. * In the Value box, select a value which either (a) explicitly says half-duplex or semi-duplex, or ( at least does not say full-duplex [e.g. 10BaseT on its own is OK]. If there is a choice between 10 and 100 with half-duplex, choose the 10. Do not choose 10Base5, 10Base2, or AUI. * Click OK to exit the Adapter settings. * Click OK to exit the Connection properties. " reboot your modem for 30 seconds and make a new speedtest, also make a tweaktest and post result URL adress http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks VanBuren
