warthance Posted October 22, 2009 CID Share Posted October 22, 2009 i have a 6Mb/s line...i usually test at about 5Mb/s which im told is normal so...ok fine. my problem is as of late my internet is all over the place. i called tech and they said they would send someone out cuz it looks like a short in the line somewhere. after i got off the phone just for kicks i replaced my phone line to my modem.going to my modem page it shows a steady 6029 connection. i run the test and i get scores from 0.1Mb/s to 4Mb/s. i just am at a loss. any ideas? things i might chech to make it more stable? i am an avid gamer so my stability is very important. plz help and ty in advance
coknuck Posted October 22, 2009 CID Share Posted October 22, 2009 The short could be anywhere from the moden to the CO.
warthance Posted October 22, 2009 Author CID Share Posted October 22, 2009 well i just replaced all the wires from the modem to the wall and to the pc. and periodicly the internet connection just disconnects. only takes a second or 2 for the connection to come back. but would that have anything to do with the wide range in the test scores or would that be something set in the pc or the modem itself? zalternate Posted October 22, 2009 CID Share Posted October 22, 2009 Other choices of problems are... A bad phone line in the house from the Demarc(grey box on the outside wall) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demarc to the inside wall outlet. If you have a modern Demarc, you can unplug the house with it and then plug your modem into it to test without any house lines being in the equation .It's fun to get into them sometimes. But the modem unsyncing for a couple of seconds(and then reconnecting) should reset it to a slower stable speed is the result of a line noise issue. Modem is about to die. A failing card in the DSL Node box. A torrent you forgot was still running. You have some type of software running on your system taking up various amounts of bandwidth, causing a fluctuation in speeds. Both are free....Download, install, update,scan.... MalwareBytes. zalternate Posted October 23, 2009 CID Share Posted October 23, 2009 Is that one of those damn combination units that is a modem and router? More trouble than it's worth for call support in the various makers in the things. Disable the wireless portion of it?
warthance Posted October 23, 2009 Author CID Share Posted October 23, 2009 lol yes it is one of those combo modem router deals. i removed the 2 wireless comps from it when i started having problems. no change. i just spoke with tech support...again...and they said it is possible that is might be the modem but they wont know till they come out and check the lines. i called them to have them run the noise test again because i just replaced all the jacks and wires to everything in the house i also changed all the filters for the phones and such and they said the results were still the same. the house is only 18 years old and completly finished in such away that none of the wires from the box outside are visible anywhere inside the house. is it possible for the wires to just go bad? also it has been raining real bad here for 2 days...basicly the same time the issue started...could that have anything to do with it? i am just trying to make sure it isnt anything on my end or something so simple i wanna slap my self when they slap me a service bill lol. the box outside seems to have seen better days...if it is supposed to be air tight it is not by no means. im not sure if the rain getting in there would cause this problem. i thought if water got in there and shorted the wires out it would just fry my stuff i would be in "radio silence" if you will. zalternate Posted October 23, 2009 CID Share Posted October 23, 2009 Rain can cause issues if it gets into a connection. Kinda like a wet short between the wires. Another poster here this week had slow fiber to the home in the rain and two days after the rain, their connection came back up to speed. The Demarc is supposed to be rodent proof. Or is that homeowner proof? Yea. Homeowner proof. ... And keep the rain from falling in big drops into the inside. I had one that had a nice collection of lady bugs in it for the winter and all their minuscule poop as well. Sometimes there is a bit of electric grease to try and stop corrosion in the connections. A place I lived, if the rain hit one of the many splices in the line just right, one particular home would lose their phone service for two days. I don't think the Telco ever found the bad spot. tommie gorman Posted October 23, 2009 CID Share Posted October 23, 2009 Yep, every year the lady bugs find my office in the basement ......... but not the rest of the house for some odd reason.
warthance Posted October 23, 2009 Author CID Share Posted October 23, 2009 well it has since stopped raining and everything seems to be running fine, so i called the tel company again and they ran the line test but say there is still noise in the line so the tech should be here somewhere in the next 4 hours. as soon as he does his thing and leaves i will be posting his findings and what he did to fix it...who knows it just my help someone like me later on :
