icg1032 Posted January 9, 2007 CID Share Posted January 9, 2007 Powerboost is something Comcast is putting out in areas that don't have Verizon Fios. It gives your downloads a speed burst for about a minute before it starts to settle down to your advertised speed. You'll get a better explanation here: http://news.com.com/Comcast+gives+broadband+users+a+speed+boost/2100-1034_3-6079070.html?tag=nefd.top

icg1032 Posted January 9, 2007 CID Share Posted January 9, 2007 Thanks all. Yes, fortunately those are pretty consistent speeds, except a few days back when some of the servers were having some problems. Even during peak times I can pull down those speeds. Have done quite a bit of tweaking and the RWIN I have now seems to be the best.
mogramjo Posted January 9, 2007 CID Share Posted January 9, 2007 That's great icg...my speeds have been real consistant until just the last few days. Just for 'luck' I fiddled with my RWIN too and we'll see, if it does no good...it can't do any harm either.
icg1032 Posted January 9, 2007 CID Share Posted January 9, 2007 We just got news today that now Comcast is going to be deploying Powerboost on the Upload side in February. We will be Powerboosting anywhere from 1 to 2Mbps, depending on our original tier. Should make a lot of people happy, but then some will still complain. Have a great day. lunatik4 Posted January 11, 2007 CID Share Posted January 11, 2007 I work for Comcast as well. For regular users who get 6MBdown/384KBup, your downloads will be up to 12MB down and up to 1MB up. The speed for downloading will only last for the first 10MB of data. The upload will only last the first 5MB of data. Now for premier which is 8MBdown/768KBup, it is up to 16MB down and up to 2MBup. The speeds for downloading will last for the first 20MB and for upload will last for 10MB. Once those limits have been met, its supposed to throttle back down to your original tier. Does it vary in real life? Welp, once we see some files of great size, like over 100MB being downloaded and some numbers posted,we might get a better picture. It's all throttled. So the more that Comcast rolls this out to all of their markets, we'll see how it turns out. From what i can gather so far, it looks promising. If not, hey, it's better than what we had before

icg1032 Posted January 13, 2007 CID Share Posted January 13, 2007 Very nice man. So how long does the boost last when downloading a large file? It generally lasts for about 20Mb and then starts to level off. But then it depends on the server you're downloading from. I've seen it last for up to 50 to 60Mb before it starts to level off.
