JediofDarkness Posted July 2, 2005 CID Share Posted July 2, 2005 Hey all. I'm a new customer of DirecWay. Before I ordered it, I contacted them and asked a multitude of questions about what I should except, because I didn't want to get it and be really disapointed. But I was lied to. Here's what I mean. I had talked to a technical support agent about the FAP, and he told me that it would be a non-issue for me because they had upped it to 350MB and that even if I hit the FAP, that it would only shave off 50% of my connection max. He also told me that I would get a DW7000 modem, but I got a DW6000, but I guess that's not too much of an issue. Well, yesterday I tested my connection at about 788kb/s, I wish I would have saved a test, but I didn't think about it. I started downloading some stuff because I was excited about the 70-90kB/s download speeds, since I'd been on dialup before this. He assured me of this saying that he had many of his customers that went over the FAP daily. Well, all of a sudden I got FAP'd. I knew because my connection just about completely died. Here's a test I ran: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 16 Kbps about 0 Mbps (tested with 97 kB) Download Speed is:: 2 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1) Test Time:: Sat Jul 2 06:27:37 CDT 2005 Bottom Line:: 0X faster than 56K 1MB download in 512 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 1.98 % of your hosts average (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-QN7C9T35L I would hardly consider that 50% of my connection!! It's even worse than the dialup I had before! Does everyone get this bad of an FAP? I'm planning on contacting them (...laughs) about this and trying to milk this for all it's worth, because I was flat out lied to about this. Not only did the FAP nearly completely take out my connection, I didn't download NEAR 350MB, was just over the 170MB-ish area, so he lied to me about that too. Just to put it out there: Modem: DW6000 OS: Windows XP SP2 Router: Linksys WRT54G (Connected over Ethernet) Signal Strength:
Aggr3 Posted July 2, 2005 CID Share Posted July 2, 2005 JediofDarkness ....welcome to the forum.. Yes ...when your Fap'd ..it's really that slow...and the limit is 169Mb on the regular costomer account. you can upgrade your plan for the 350Mb but that's a lot more per month...I don't remember the Fap recovery rate...but it's slow...8-10 hours I think. You can run a program to limit your download speed so that it won't happen though.
JediofDarkness Posted July 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 2, 2005 Yes, I know this, but the point is that the technical support agent I talked to told me otherwise. And I do use a program to limit speed when I need to, but I didn't use it because he told me that it wouldn't bring my connection down that slow. So what pisses me off is that for the whole rest of today I'm only going to have a 2-3kB/s connection. So basicly I'm stuck with dialup with even worse latency times
Guest wmmc Posted July 2, 2005 CID Share Posted July 2, 2005 There is a difference between consumer and professional edition. Consumer Edition = 169 MB FAp bucket, 59.99 a month, dynamic IP. Professional Edition = 350 MB FAP bucket, 89.99 a month, static or dynamic IP(your choice) Recovery rate is 47 kbps, and I think its 50 for the professional account. OK, I'll try to explain what the technician told me better. I had looked it all up online and knew all about the FAP and the difference between the consumer and business editions, and I was planning on getting the business edition so I wouldn't hit the FAP as easily. The tech told me that with the "consumer" edition (the $59.95/mo plan) I would get the 350MB FAP limit, so there was no reason for me to go to the business edition as it wouldn't give me any extra features. I was a little confused about this because of what I had read on the site, and he explained to me that two months back they had updated all the hardware and had put up new satellites so they had upped the FAP limit, and that the website was out of date. He also told me that I would recieve the DW7000 modem because of the new hardware updates instead of the DW6000. Maybe that will help explain why I'm so upset about this and feel cheated, he either outright lied to me or was misinformed. Either way, they're at fault and something should be done about it. Guest wmmc Posted July 2, 2005 CID Share Posted July 2, 2005 If speed dropped after 170 MB, you have consumer edition.
JediofDarkness Posted July 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 2, 2005 OK, my issue here isn't what type of service I have, it's that the tech told me I would have otherwise. He explained to me that with the consumer edition (not business) I would have 350MB and that the FAP would never take more than 50% of my connection, as well as that I would recieve a DW7000 modem. But I'm gonna call the guy (I have his ext) here soon and see what's going on.

JediofDarkness Posted July 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 2, 2005 Fair Access Policy. It's a little thing (or big thing) that limits your download speed when you download a certain ammount of data within a 4 hour period. The tech I talked to assured me that I would be able to download 350MB before the FAP would take effect and that even if the FAP took effect that my connection wouldn't drop below 50%. Buzz Posted July 3, 2005 CID Share Posted July 3, 2005 I kind of feel the same way....I was told my FAP was 169megs (4hours) ....but the LIE I WAS TOLD WAS ONCE YOU HIT THE FAP YOU GET 56K DIAL-UP SPEEDS UNTIL YOU LET YOUR CAP REPLENISH!! Wrong got cut off!! I ran over the cap in 31minutes... I was downloading an application and at 171megs it just shut down......I thought I could just go to bed and in the morning ......like a slow dial-up connection it would be done, then I could let the cap recover.....not the way it works with Dway......so I wasted my time for nothing.....the servers at Dway don't support resume so I couldn't restart the download from where I left off.....It was start all over again!! OK now the GOOD NEWS :D Instead of getting mad I made these changes, and things are sweet for me now! First my new box gets stable speeds. (see tests below) So with my ability to download a meg every 6-8 seconds I can hit the residential fap in no time. This no longer meets my needs, so I upgraded to the small Biz package....ouch in the pocket book! :D :D :D This is what I got for my $30 Bucks!! My new cap is 350megs (4hours), my recovery time is 57k.....AND THE BEST PART IS AMERICAN TECH SUPPORT!! You don't have to wait 15-20 minutes like you do for the residential accounts, the average wait time has been 5 minutes. They can understand you and you can understand them.....no more farmed out India tech support for me!! The second change was I bought download studio it allows you to stop any download and resume it at your convenience so I can stay away from that annoying FAP cap!! It also does muilt thread downloads up to ten if you have the bandwidth....even using a single thread it does some kind of compression and averaging thing that makes your downloads faster! Look at the file I downloaded below 39.8 megs in just under 6 minutes with DownloadStudio! :::.. Buzz Posted July 3, 2005 CID Share Posted July 3, 2005 Let the browser wars begin! :haha: .....just used to IE I guess. I have IE all tweaked for my needs and it integrates well with McAfee virus checker....my speeds are as good as I am going to get with Dway so a different browser is not going to get me but a few Kbs more anyway.....as soon as IE 7.0 is released with the tabs and internet speed monitor I'll be happy Buzz

Buzz Posted July 3, 2005 CID Share Posted July 3, 2005 The business package does not do anything for your speed, it just ups your FAP cap to 350 your recovery rate to 57K......Plus US support team! and shorter waits for service!
