If anyone could post a site where I can find ISP's in my area that would be great. Also, I am wondering why my connection speed is slow, I dont live in the middle of nowhere but maybe I am far away from the SBC Yahoo station, who knows

humorman Posted July 13, 2005 CID Share Posted July 13, 2005 Hey I fell you man. I had about those same speeds before. With my sbc dsl. And I found out that I was to far away from there station. And that I shouldn't have been because they have remote stations and they told me the moved me over to a remote station like 3 times before. But seems they never did. And when they check there computer and something else it gave them different results on saying I was close enough and on saying I wasn't. So finally they said we can move you to the remote station and I said what you said you did. And then they said no you are still on the old station. I said ok move it and then they said my dsl had to be down for 10 days or so I said ok. So a few days later I called back and said what is going on I still have my dsl and it was supposed to be off. And then they check the order the other person made and it wasn't right. It didn't say I need to be moved or rewired to the new station and finally I got a good person and he got me moved over. SO call and ask them how far away you are from there station and see if they have a remote station closer and get moved over.

Obscene Truth Posted July 14, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 14, 2005 I have another question, it is a bit off topic but, can you install programs and games on external hard drives? I just ordered an internal HD and it wasn't compatible so I am leaning toward getting an external to avoid all that hassle
php Posted July 14, 2005 CID Share Posted July 14, 2005 Yea, you can... but if the drive letter changes for any reason, the game won't run (as long as you don't add or remove drives, this won't happen...
Obscene Truth Posted July 14, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 14, 2005 Thanks a lot, I don't think I will be removing drives and such, but does removing the external hard drive apply to what you said also? After I get the hdd i think I'm done upgrading this PC, and going to start saving for a new one
php Posted July 14, 2005 CID Share Posted July 14, 2005 It should keep its letter even if you remove it and reconnect it... I think Windows XP is a lot better at reserving letters for specific drives...

ughson Posted July 15, 2005 CID Share Posted July 15, 2005 hey obscene truth. i was having the same problem for 8 months now. it was a b!tch. i had the same speed stats as u did. they set my speed at 384 but i was subscribed at 384-1.5. but they said i was to far to get 1.5. also they thought that there was something wrong with my line. so yesterday a tech came in after maybe 30 techs coming to my house for 8 months. this tech said my line was fine and that its perfect. then the sbc tech followed up (they called) on the dispatch. they set my speed at 1.5 but still was getting 384 speeds. so then she was trying to figure what was wrong then shes like well i dont know what to do then she said wait thats the problem they didnt set 1.5 speed at the ISP they only set it at the line dept. so i was like what. then she said she would ccall back because she was gonna try and change it then she called back and she told me to do a speed test. then i got speeds at 1.5 for the first time in 8 months. i was shocked to get this cause i thought i would never get this speed. but she said i was to far and the dsl may disconnect at times but its been working fine so far. so the point being is try to call your line dept. instead of the regular sbc number and try to ask them about this. hope i helped

Guest helloimtim Posted July 15, 2005 CID Share Posted July 15, 2005 You may want to ask them how are they gonna make this right?? You overpaid 150 bucks and want to know what they are gonna do to fix the situwaytion. There is allot of compatition out there. They may give you a Sweat deal and or Jump you up. When you speak to them always always ask for the person in charge. That way some flunky can not give you the runaround. You may come out smelling like a rose if ya play your cards right.....Good luck and let us know how it turned out.........
Obscene Truth Posted July 16, 2005 Author CID Share Posted July 16, 2005 Yesterday I called them, they had me do a lot of nothing, power cycling the modem and such. They said that they would call today and try to fix it for us. I went to check my speed according to the modem and surprisingly it changed from 384Kbps (as it was yesterday) to 1984Kbps. But, I went and tested the speed and it was no different. I guess I'll have to wait for them to call and do what they gotta do. Also, has anyone ever had their upload speed be faster then their download speed? It's pretty weird but my DL speed is at roughly 384kbps and my upload speed is at like 440Kbps! kinda weird huh
