Speed test question

I'm on Earthlink's 5000/384 plan and usually get speeds like this when I test here:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 4927 Kbps about 4.9 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB)

Download Speed is:: 601 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1)

Test Time:: Sat Jul 16 08:59:00 CDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 88X faster than 56K 1MB download in 1.7 sec

Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 35.1 % faster than the average for host (mindspring.com)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-2U8ACJVGN

But when I test here: http://www.houston.rr.com/SpeedTest/speedTest.html

I'm rarely over 4700 Kbps. Kind of strange since I live in Houston, wouldn't you say?

BTW, I think testmy.net has the more accurate tests since they are more consistently the same speed, but shouldn't I have a higher score from a closer server?

philp: I tried the test at the rr site I got 38K Houston is farther than the Dallas testmy .I got 32K at testmy.My onboard meter "MyVitalAgent" showed both to average 38K.Of course this is dial-up

& pretty good for 26600 feet from the telco.

Strange that you'd be faster in Houston than Dallas. I tried 3 times in a row at the RR site and the best I got was 4665 Kbps. Then I did the SmarTest here and got this:

:::.. Download Stats ..:::

Connection is:: 4912 Kbps about 4.9 Mbps (tested with 12160 kB)

Download Speed is:: 600 kB/s

Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server1)

Test Time:: Sat Jul 16 09:46:16 CDT 2005

Bottom Line:: 88X faster than 56K 1MB download in 1.71 sec

Diagnosis: Awesome! 20% + : 34.69 % faster than the average for host (mindspring.com)

Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-PBMZTD9JX

I'm almost 250 miles from Dallas since I live in Houston, so it's odd to me that I get that kind of difference.

Maybe Ca3le just has better servers than RR.

I do have great servers, but the quality of the route to you from the server is usually the most important.  In developing this site I have taken extra steps to make sure my server is on a good backbone (can't be the best for the whole world) and that the server(s) can support what I'm tring to do.  I'm not suprised you get higher speeds here... I do too, and so do many, many, many loyal users :)
