MSS ( Maximum Segment Size ) depends on what type of connection you have

for Cable, LAN and some dsl connections its 1460

for dsl or FIOS over PPPoE its 1452, 1440

these are the most common values

you can read more about MSS here http://www.tcpipguide.com/free/t_TCPMaximumSegmentSizeMSSandRelationshiptoIPDatagra-2.htm

On a similar note, Van, how can we tell what MSS we're on, broadbandreport?

you can run a TCP analyzer like these

http://forums.speedguide.net:8117/

http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks

MSS= MTU-40

some routers do mess up your MTU so the analyzer will show wrong MTU, but for Cable and LAN MTU is 1500 for almost all, and that gives a MSS of 1460

for DSL MTU is usally 1492 but sometimes 1500 aswell, that depends on ISP

i have the same thing as this topic. same dl/ul speeds and everything and same problems. if its capped and i call my isp what do i say and all that. i dont really know any of this stuff but i want my speeds as high as i can get them. and if i do call them and they get the speeds to the advertised speeds or higher speeds would it cost any extra, im thinking that it wouldnt because that is what they advertise and all but i dont know. any help wuld be nice.
