kdeez Posted October 21, 2004 CID Share Posted October 21, 2004 Hi everyone, I'm using Earthlink adsl with advertised speeds of 3.0M/128k. When I run a speed test I get: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 1159 Kbps about 1.2 Mbps (tested with 579 KB) Download Speed is:: 141 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 21 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 7.26 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=B24CQUSEJ If my connection speed is 1159, that appears to me that I am connection at only a little over a third of advertised speed. If my download speed is 141kb's, it appears that I am only downloading at a little more than 10% of the connection speed. Is that right? Still way faster than 56k modem, but I thought it would be faster. Thanks for the help - Ken.
DJVageli Posted October 21, 2004 CID Share Posted October 21, 2004 Hi welcome to the site, I have Earthlink Cable 3000/384 and I usually get speeds of about 2700-2900 so Im happy. For your problem though make sure you dont have any programs running when taking the test and go to this link where it shows VanBuren's way of making your connection faster http//testmy.net/forumz/viewtopic.php?t=
kdeez Posted October 21, 2004 Author CID Share Posted October 21, 2004 Thanks for the welcome and advice. I'll check out the link to improve speed. I usually don't have any programs running when I surf except my anti-virus. So does it look like I'm running extremely slow? Earthlink advertises "up to 70 times faster than a 56k modem". If I'm running 21 times faster, I can't be running only 15% of my connect speed (this just occured to me).

kdeez Posted October 21, 2004 Author CID Share Posted October 21, 2004 I'm running Spybot S&D, and no wireless network. By the way, looking at Van Burens tips, it asks, "What's your ping"? How do I find that out? Thanks.
wingzero2309 Posted October 22, 2004 CID Share Posted October 22, 2004 i dont know the official way to find ping...but if it were me, i would just get on counterstrike and look at my ping from tehre
DJVageli Posted October 22, 2004 CID Share Posted October 22, 2004 Another way to test your ping is if u have Windows XP go to Start, All programs,Accessories, Comand Prompt Wen u get there just type "ping(space)www.(whatever site).com then hit enter. Itll give u your highest, lowest and average ping. Hope it helps D
kdeez Posted October 22, 2004 Author CID Share Posted October 22, 2004 Thanks DJ. I did that and my results were: Packets sent = 4, lost =0 (0% lost) Approximate round trip times time in milli-seconds: Monimum = 55ms, Maximum = 58 ms, Average = 57 ms So what does that mean? Thanks , Ken.
Cobra Posted October 22, 2004 CID Share Posted October 22, 2004 I'm running Spybot S&D' date=' and no wireless network. By the way, looking at Van Burens tips, it asks, "What's your ping"? How do I find that out? Thanks.[/quote'] spybot is a great program, but its even better when used with ad-aware. they were voted the best spyware removal combo in a lot of sites ive been to. if u have the money, get ad-aware pro (ad-aware personal is free and the same as pro except for...) because it includes ad-watch, which stops most spyware from ever getting to u. or (tho i dont recommend or suggest it for obvious legal reasons) u could bootleg it. www.lavasoft.de/
DJVageli Posted October 22, 2004 CID Share Posted October 22, 2004 Those are your ping results, so the average is what u would use D And glad to help!

xs1 Posted October 23, 2004 CID Share Posted October 23, 2004 Im using Earthlink Cable , 3/386 and my speeds are 3800 / 360 { :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 3682 Kbps about 3.7 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is:: 449 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 66 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 2.28 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=VW6HW4RSW } ^slow right now since tesymy is being raped... iv never had a prob with elink, but a few suggestions would be to scan for viruses as well! I mean, hell why not? you just scanned for spyware http://housecall.trendmicro.com http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/home.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym&close_parent=true&bhcp=1 Also with dsl, the further away from the box, as well as the more people using it in your area, can cause slow connections.
