Dittoz Posted September 10, 2005 CID Share Posted September 10, 2005 Ok guys I need your help. The Comcast man is coming to take a look at my craptastic speeds on Sunday and I need some advice before he gets here. Those guys aren't usually the brightest bulbs in the drawer. Here's my stats, starting with Van Buren's Sticky: 1) Windows XP, SP2 - p2p fix applied. 2) Comcast - 8000/768 3) Tweaks installed and current settings: http://ttester.broadbandreports.com/tweak/block:385700e?verbose=1&service=cable&speed=8000&os=winXP&via=normal 4)Testmy.net: :::.. Dittoz Posted September 10, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 10, 2005 Oh well I've got one more question too. We just moved in June to the new house we're in now. I have never had Comcast come out to this house before, I set the internet up myself. I know there is a box outside on the side of the house that controls the frequencies of the different cable lines coming into the house, and I think the cable modem is supposed to be on the highest frequencies. So what do the different frequencies mean? And how big of a difference will it make for my cable modem to be on the higher frequency? Elite.Pete Posted September 10, 2005 CID Share Posted September 10, 2005 well thiers a range of where it should be. when i had the tech come out he actually changed my signal levels because they were too high. it's one of those things.. too high is bad too low is bad the tech will know when he comes out. Dittoz Posted September 11, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 11, 2005 Ok. Comcast man just left. He checked the box outside, there was an old splitter on there which he replaced with a new one, and the entire box was soaking wet. The cables that he replaced had rust in them. He told me to wait about an hour before testing it (he was going to call comcast and have them do some things first) then try it. I'll post the results in an hour. I hope this fixes it! VanBuren Posted September 11, 2005 CID Share Posted September 11, 2005 dont think it will go much faster then this the inconsistency is not a problem with the settings, my guess is loss somewhere in your route, try pathping command to check the loss on your route start-run-cmd pathping testmy.net VanBuren

Dittoz Posted September 11, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 11, 2005 Oooh. I feel special. Called Comcast, now I'm hold for the elusive Tier 2 Technician. We'll see how this goes.
Dittoz Posted September 11, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 11, 2005 Tier 2 woman said "Crap, your connection is horrible". I said "Thanks, I know". Anywho they're going to send someone else out on Tuesday. Said they would probably replace the cable lines in the house. House is only 6 years old, but they said sometimes the contractors use the cheapest of the cheap. So we'll see how that goes. She said the problem is packet loss before it even gets to the modem. So with that conclusion, I guess I can quit trying to fix it through tweaks
compuworm Posted September 11, 2005 CID Share Posted September 11, 2005 I hope you dont mind answering a few questions for me: 1. Did you have download tests on Testmy.net that hanged during testing? Did these tests give irratic readings depending on the wheather the download testing hung? 2. What OS do you have XP, What? If you have XP did you read the post: http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-8087.0. 3. Did you look at your Cable Modem web page and what was your Download Power Level? For comcast it should be between (for best results) -15 to 0. What was your Upstream Power Level? For comast it should be no higher than 50.3. Dittoz Posted September 11, 2005 Author CID Share Posted September 11, 2005 1. Sometimes download tests on Testmy.net have hanged. If by hanging up you mean it will start the percentage bar, and then pause at say 18% for a second or two and then continue on. And yes the readings were lower if the test did pause. 2. I do have XP. And I have read that post, I wasn't able to find anything that would affect my performance though. (CCleaner helps fix those problems) 3. Here is a paste of my settings. Frequency 693000000 Hz Locked Signal to Noise Ratio 34 dB Power Level -2 dB The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading Upstream Value Channel ID 1 Frequency 30000000 Hz Ranged Power Level 46 dBmV
