Guest PeePs Posted October 28, 2004 CID Share Posted October 28, 2004 1. Anyone else ever have a problem where you couldn't do system restore to any date because it gets half way through and then just loads windows saying that it couldn't do a restore to that date? If you did have that problem did you find a fix for it? 2. I think in another topic I read that your MTU is set by your ISP? I do tweak tests to try and tweak my connection some, and they all tell me to change my MTU to 1500. So I use TCPoptimizer and change it to 1500, but then after I restart it never actually changes it to 1500. I swear I had it set to 1500 a month ago and it worked, but then all of a sudden my internet has slowed, and the MTU won't change to 1500. NoShow Posted October 28, 2004 CID Share Posted October 28, 2004 Mine is doing the same thing. No matter how many times I change mine to 1500 it doesn't never stay either, and everytime I tweak it, it'll work for a little bit but then it starts slowing down again so I'm in the process of just re-formatting mine. I'm saving everything to CD's now so hopefully I won't lose much of anything. So anyway you're aren't alone with this. Hopefully formatting will help. Good Luck! System restore never works for me aswell, so i disabled it and use Norton ghost, if my pc freaks out 2. quote from dslnuts.com "MSS is the real amount of data you can send/receive at any given time over your connection medium. MSS is a calculated number from MTU (Max Transfer Unit). Most of the time it is calculated by MTU-40=MSS. Some configurations may not fit this forumla though so you can visit the Speedguide.net TCP/IP analyzer to get your correct MSS size. Some common MSS sizes are: Ethernet: 1460 (1500-40) Cable: 1460 (1500-40) aDSL: 1452 (1492-40) Dialup: 536 (576-40)" i suggest you use cablenutprogram and click delete cablenut tweaks and reboot, now run TCP analyzer at speedguide and check your MTU again, the MTU value you see now is what windows find at your ISP service, and thats the value you should use, I dont agree when speedguide

Yes Ive had the same thing happen I have WinXP and I'm usually pretty lucky with restore ,but it does suck its just a little better than nothing,From what I can tell when this happens its due to fragmentation to the registry. I do have a program that works pretty good its just not a full restore and if I have it loaded and I use Win restore it corrupts the files so there no good. I guess I don't find it that big of a deal to format and start all over, or if you have more than one partition and keep the OS in one and everything else in another that seems to work good for many people. I think its just an individual thing how you want to set up your puter./also you can get a perfect restore if you use the backup from the install CD...it takes a lot of room but its a "virgin" copy if when all is well you make a copy I think your talking about the MAX..MTU setting allowed that tells the highest value to allow which is 1500. Guest PeePs Posted October 29, 2004 CID Share Posted October 29, 2004 I look for crackz which then shows porn pop-ups which then gets me interested which then leads to the spyware . I also download a lot of free software like adobe photoshop and premier and stuff, but i dont think that comes with any. HMMMM i dunno im ganna have to reformat already which is really ***. I made it two months since the last reformatation!
