richcornucopia Posted December 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 2, 2005 With all the processors suggested so far, they seem to be mostly single core. Will I even see a difference If I go with a 64 opetron or mobile 64 vs my Pentium 4 3ghz right now? Because if these processors aren't going to perform better than my Pentium 4 then I'll stick with it and maybe get a new water cooling system. hulioni Posted December 2, 2005 CID Share Posted December 2, 2005 I have a P4 2.8c @ 3.6 and as for benchmarks and games it doesn't quite keep up. If you are just going to play games then AMD would be the pick hands down. If you do mostly video editing and the like I would say that the Intel has the advantage. If you want a comparison to an x2 3800 run some sisoft sanda benches and I'll underclock mine down to the 3800's speeds and bench the same ones and post if you'd like. My 175 @ 2.6 destroys my Intel in every bench and in games (Intel has a 6800ultra and AMD has SLI 7800gtx's so its not comparing apples to apples). For the money I would still say the Opteron 165 dual core, if you could ever find one.
richcornucopia Posted December 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 2, 2005 Alright I'll run some tests.
richcornucopia Posted December 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 2, 2005 Heres what I got on the cpu arithmetic benchmark
hulioni Posted December 2, 2005 CID Share Posted December 2, 2005 I guess you can see what a x2 3800 does. I'll post mine at stock and at 2.6. You should be able to overclock the x2 and the opteron easily to 2.4 (the opteron should make 2.4 to 2.6 fairly easy). I post scores here in a minute. richcornucopia Posted December 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 2, 2005 If I go with a socket 939 processor would this be a good board to overclock with http://www.biostar.com.tw/t-series/products/socket%20939/tforce6100-939/product_details.php? Its only 75 dollars at newegg so its not too expensive.
hulioni Posted December 2, 2005 CID Share Posted December 2, 2005 Not sure about that board, all I've ever used was Abit and DFI. One other thing about the AMD's is that for the most part I think they run a bit cooler than comparable Intel chips, which may or may not matter to you. richcornucopia Posted December 2, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 2, 2005 I've got water cooling so temps aren't too important.
