PioneerCrazed Posted December 15, 2005 CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 I'm getting ready to upgrade my Celeron for an P4 800 fsb, and drop in a vid card in the 8X AGP slot. I want this thing to go as fast as it can, especially for gaming. Right now my comp has 1 stick of 512mb pc2100 ram. I'm going to buy another 512 stick, only it will pc3200(most my MoBo can handle). Would I be better off having 1 GB of pc2100? or pull out the stick of pc2100, and just have the 512mb pc3200? Is this confusing? Appreciate any advice... Blunted Posted December 15, 2005 CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 you should have matching ram
PioneerCrazed Posted December 15, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 I thought the faster ram would just downclock to the slower one? No?
disturbed Posted December 15, 2005 CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 if you have a choice of 1 gig of pc2100 ram and 512mb of pc3200 ram go for the pc3200
disturbed Posted December 15, 2005 CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 and yes....if you have faster and slower ram in your system (mismatched) - your comp will take the slower one as your ram speed
PioneerCrazed Posted December 15, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 Thanks, that's exactley the info I was looking for. I guess I'll grab a stick of 3200, and sell off my stick of 2100...

PioneerCrazed Posted December 15, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 ? Could you please explain? I'm don't get what you're saying. Here's the link to my mobo *Don't Laugh* http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?DetailID=453&MenuID=0&LanID=
disturbed Posted December 15, 2005 CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 ay....... 1st - you will not dual channel if your motherboard doesnt support it 2nd - his motherboard doesnt seem to support it 3rd - stepping it up from 266mhz to 400mhz - you will see a noticable difference if you just have 512mb of ram compared to 1 gig at 266mhz
PioneerCrazed Posted December 15, 2005 Author CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 Dual channel is a type of RAM, correct? It isn't a term for using both the slots on the board, right? I will have no problem with two sticks of basic DDR400 ram? Non-ECC, nothing... I'm thinking of grabbing a stick or two of this, I would think Samsung is a good name? http://www.directron.com/ddr400512.html
disturbed Posted December 15, 2005 CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 I would personally not go for samsung brand - if you have $ go with either kingston value ram or corsair - dual channel means basically that your mobo will have 2 memory controllers - i believe that it doesnt have anything to do with the ram itself - its just an advertising scheme
disturbed Posted December 15, 2005 CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 ps dual channel is not a type of ram
peepnklown Posted December 15, 2005 CID Share Posted December 15, 2005 Dual-channel memory employs two pipes to feed data to the processor, thus being able to deliver up to twice the date of a single pipe (of course, this is a motherboard architecture). Now, for best performance the RAM should be
