  1. It's a normal hard drive; just in an external enclosure. I imagine access time to it on a network would be the same as access time to the internal laptop drive, maybe a little slower but not much.
  2. I'm not sure what they have connected to the remote DSLAM I'm on but I'm sure it isn't fiber.
  3. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822340006 Pretty cheap for that size drive and comes with back up software. You could back up your entire drive on it and still have lots of space left.

And latency is also horrible when the neighborhood kids are at home.
  5. ? Would like to compare performance / price, etc...
  6. I did have the business class account with 2M / 500K but they had some problems with the line and I was only getting 1 M / 250K and downgraded my account to the residential service, They changed the billing but 3 weeks after that they got the line problems fixed and I still have 2M / 500K for $40.00 less per month so I won't post the company name just in case...
  7. Cameros have always been notoriously bad at traction on wet pavement.
  8. I would recommend running the disk defragmenter before using gparted to repartion the drive.
  9. I've used Kingston HyperX RAM for years. Never had any problems with it. Isn't it amazing how cheap RAM is today compared to just 3 or 4 years ago? 4 gigs of Hyper X now for only $80.00 when I paid over $200.00 for one gig not that long ago.
  10. Wildblue is a flybynight company. Drop them and sign up for the new Hughsnet service. I would not be surprised to see WB filing for chapter 11 protection soon.
  11. Looks like FAPPED speeds to me. You over the bandwidth limit for the past 30 days?
  12. I got photoshop 5.0 lite with my canon camera a few years back. Of course considering how much I paid for the camera the software was far from free. It doesn't have all the bells n whistles but it has everything I need. And it made my box completely pirate free.
  13. Installing the 3g equipment ( transmitters / receivers ) at the tower site and the antennas on the tower. Still pretty expensive but AT^T claims they are going to have more than 300 cities covered with it by the end of this year. I'll believe it when I see it though.
  14. GParted will probably solve the problem, If it doesn't, I'll give you a step by step walkthrough on fixing the MBR ( master boot record ).
  15. No they wouldn't. Items cost less, that is. It's all about greed. Both on the seller's and the buyer's / pirate's side. If there was no piracy company CEOs would be flying around in a different lear jet for each day of the week instead of owning just one and you would not see any lowering of prices. Proof that there are many many people of low intelligence out there? Norton anti-virus is on the list. Why would anyone want their system running at a snail's pace?
  16. Have you tried booting from the vista dvd and running the recovery console; then open a command prompt and typing fixmbr?
  17. Ranish Partition Manager will do what you are wanting to do. http://www.allensmith.net/Storage/HDDlimit/FAT32.htm You will have to live with the 4 gig file size limit though. That means you will most likely have to split movies into 2 separate files.
  18. What do you use for FTP? What is your connection type? ie. cable, DSL, dial up....
  19. I don't know what mobo & BIOS version you have Blako. Also, I'm not quite sure what you are asking. But your 8600gt DOES begin sending a signal to the monitor during POST right after the BIOS tests it and determines that it is working properly. It is at the factory default settings until the OS loads to the point where it can take over and change the settings to whatever you have them set at. An interesting note about the OP's mobo: His Gigabyte mobo is "supposed" to be able to detect a PCIE video device and automatically disable the onboard video when that condition exists. That may or may not work so it is a good idea to manually disable the built in video in the BIOS and be done with it since it only takes a few seconds to do.
  20. You don't need a Ferrari to go to the grocery store. There are many cards priced at or below $100.00 that will work just fine for what you want to do with them and, more importantly, will not require you to buy a new power supply or mod your case in order to get them installed. I made that mistake back when Oblivion IV came out. My Radeon 600 pro ran the game but the framerates were low and no eye candy. I bought into the hype and bought a Radeon X 1800 XT. It barely fit in my case and when I got it installed my 400 watt PSU would not run it. Another week of waiting and a new 550 watt supply latter I was finally running the game at max settings. What a huge disappointment. Average framerates were nowhere close to what others with that card were claiming. And the eye candy wasn't that impressive either. And as for direct x 10; don't worry about it. It's there if you need it but it will have 0 effect on the way the card performs with direct x 9.c under win xp pro. You probably already know this but in case you don't: Since your mobo has onboard video when you install a new card on the first boot you will have to go into the BIOS and disable the onboard video or the card will not be recognized.
  21. Didn't know that. Learn something new every day. I still wouldn't "upgrade" to Vista just for directX 10 though.
  22. Unless he is still running windows 2k or earlier; that shouldn't be a problem. DirectX 10 is included with the card.
  23. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102703 Not a great card, but, with the mail in rebate, @ 85.00, you can't beat the price vs performance ratio. Should play the games you have with no problems.
  24. Ever since I got Photoshop 5.0 lite free with a Canon Camera everything on my machine is legal. I think Photoshop is the most pirated program out there. Mostly because Adobe would rather make 50 million dollars $600.00 at a time than to make 1 billion dollars $50.00 at a time.
  25. The FAP limit reduction isn't so bad, but their accounting of how much bandwidth you use is. According to them I used 3.2 gigs down last month. According to DU Meter I used 1.4 gigs. And I can shut down my computer and leave it off for a few hours and then boot up and log in to their FAP meter and see it has pegged me for using 30 or 40 megs of bandwidth while the system was shut down. WB will not admit that their metering software has a major problem. A typical day for me is reading e-mail, a couple of hours playing yahoo games, reading and posting to a few message boards, and surfing a couple of news sites. DU Meter shows me using about 20 to 30 megs per day. Their fap meter shows me using more than 100 megs per day. Installing a new mobo, new memory, and a new hard drive when I upgraded my cpu last month did not change the discreptency between what they say I use and what I actually do use, so that shoots down tech supports theory of a virus causing it. One day last month I unplugged the modem for 17 hours and when I reconnected and checked their fap meter, it showed I had used bandwidth even with no power to the modem.
