  1. There is a setting, either in the BIOS or the OS where you can set what action the system will take in the event of a power failure. Either stay off or reset. I've never used it and don't remember where it is. Maybe someone else here knows.
  2. 768 Kbps = 90 - 96 KB One is measured in kilobits the other kilobytes per second. It would be helpful if you would post the results of your tests.
  3. Actually there is a big difference between the 40 wire and 80 wire IDE cables. While using a 40 wire one will work and you may not notice a difference if it is connected to a hard drive; if it is connected to a cd or dvd burner, you will notice a difference in the time it takes to do a burn. Using a 40 wire cable will force it to use ata 66.
  4. That is a novel way of describing the firing of Carly Fiorina.
  5. I have a question. Why did HP try to commit corporate suicide ( and almost succeed )by buying Compaq?
  6. Prolly be around all day to get everything the way you want it.
  7. Silly question, but you do have the memory installed in the proper slots? That mobo has 4 slots; 2 for DDR 400 and 2 for DDR 2 533. And if they are in the proper slots does the BIOS see it as DDR 2 RAM?
  8. Altel? Ouch. They are almost as bad as Frontier AKA Citizens. I had Altel here years ago before the internet was invented and was lucky just to keep a dial tone, especially every time it rained. It was a party line too. 5 customers sharing one POTs line.
  9. Last week before I acquired and used the private tel number of my telco's president of operations for my state, pings for me at this time of day were running between 1000 and 4000+ ms. After a lengthy chat with him they are now like this all the time. Pinging testmy.net [74.54.226.166] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 74.54.226.166: bytes=32 time=74ms TTL=50 Reply from 74.54.226.166: bytes=32 time=73ms TTL=50 Reply from 74.54.226.166: bytes=32 time=72ms TTL=50 Reply from 74.54.226.166: bytes=32 time=75ms TTL=50 Ping statistics for 74.54.226.166: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 72ms, Maximum = 75ms, Average = 73ms Not too shabby for a remote DSLAM connection.
  10. My only options here are this, satellite, or dial up. I had Starband and Wildblue. Won't go through that again. I mentioned to the phone guy I spoke with yesterday the new 5 gig bandwidth limit and he said he hadn't heard anything about that. Not surprising as they seem to be trying to keep it a secret for some reason. He told me, well Wildblue and other satellite providers use caps. I ask him if the DSLAM unit cost 500 million dollars like a satellite placed in geostationary orbit does since that is the only way to add bandwidth to a satellite connection. I find it extremely annoying whenever anyone tries to compare apples and lemons when attempting to make a point.
  11. Maybe squeaking loud enough to the right person helps.get some grease.... And mentioning the PSC didn't hurt either. Well I just got a call back from the PR people and the guy tells me they have been "upgrading" the main lines from the CO the the big CO and are having some problems with it and it should be fixed by tomorrow. And he ask me to wait until tomorrow to call the PSC if I would. I'll giver em one more day.
  13. According to the FCC what I have can only be called broadband for 6 to 7 hours per day. And if you go with a 24 hour average it can't be called broadband at all. I post back what they say after I call them later today.
  14. Interesting. I have received no notice whatsoever about that. Why would I pay $50.00 per month for DSL when I won't even be able to download the new WoW expansion when it comes out in a few months without exceeding the bandwidth limit? I'm feeling pretty smart now for not signing a service contract with them 10 months ago to get a 10 dollar per month discount. I think I will be downgrading my account today to the 256 / 100 Kbps $19.95 per month plan. EDIT: I'm connected to a remote DSLAM unit located 16 miles from the CO. Bittorernt can and does slow it down for everybody because the span between the unit and the CO isn't fat enough to support all the users using at the same time.

  16. Ever since school let out that has been normal for my connection. From about 4 am to 8 am ping times run about 50 to 100 ms. Then at about 8:30 am which is now it starts. C:Documents and SettingsAdministrator>ping yahoo.com Pinging yahoo.com [206.190.60.37] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 206.190.60.37: bytes=32 time=323ms TTL=54 Reply from 206.190.60.37: bytes=32 time=529ms TTL=54 Reply from 206.190.60.37: bytes=32 time=403ms TTL=54 Reply from 206.190.60.37: bytes=32 time=529ms TTL=54 Ping statistics for 206.190.60.37: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 323ms, Maximum = 529ms, Average = 446ms And during the day will get progressively worse At about 9 pm it goes as high as 3500 to 4000+ ms. TelCo has done nothing to fix it. I call support, they open a ticket, I call back a week later, they say ticket was closed. Rinse, repeat Damn, even Starband satellite internet was better than this. I may well just go back to dial up....
  17. 11:30 PM and this is typical for my so called connection. C:Documents and SettingsAdministrator>ping /w 5000 yahoo.com Pinging yahoo.com [206.190.60.37] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 206.190.60.37: bytes=32 time=1522ms TTL=55 Reply from 206.190.60.37: bytes=32 time=1454ms TTL=55 Reply from 206.190.60.37: bytes=32 time=1568ms TTL=55 Reply from 206.190.60.37: bytes=32 time=1798ms TTL=55 Ping statistics for 206.190.60.37: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 1454ms, Maximum = 1798ms, Average = 1585ms Would any of you pay $50.00 per month for this?
  18. http://goliath.ecnext.com/coms2/gi_0198-421137/Court-Ruling-Supports-Claims-That.html And Windows was stolen from Apple. Gates had better lawyers than Jobs though so....
  19. Yeah Radio Shack. I also have a TI 99 4-A buried somewhere in my pack rat room. And another RS one; the CoCo II. Back in those days a lot of really stupid business people thought that hardware was where the money was in computers and allowed Bill Gates to become the richest man in the world with his stolen OS.
  20. I'm still using Win 2k pro. I do have XP pro and even installed it once but a golf game i played a lot then didn't run well on it so I went back to win 2k. Anyone remember the Tandy 1000 from 1986 or maybe 85 or maybe 84 with DOS 1.2 on a 5 and one quarter inch floppy disk? No mouse, no hard drive, monochrome amber monitor, and was very cheap @ $5432.00.
  21. I live in a van down by the river. If you come to visit me, bring gas.
  22. First thing to do is check with your neighbors to see if they are getting the same performance as you. If they are also getting slow upload performance then, most likely, Cox has allocated the available bandwidth in a way that keeps the minimum number of users complaining. Pretty much standard operating procedure for all ISPs. If it is just you then contact Cox's tech support.
  23. U prolly already did this but in case u didn't. Check in the sound control panel and make sure the balance control isn't slide all the way to the right.
  24. You can't protect your info online but you can limit possible financial damage from fraud in online transactions by using a separate checking account and a debit card on it for all online buys. That's what I do and I only deposit enough money in the account to cover the purchases I make.
