  1. Ha! As if a local installer has any idea what's going on in a direcway noc. Please.
  2. You're probably on 1150. I believe 1250 is also used as a temporary assignment when configuring and registering the terminal. I seem to remember seeing a different transponder temporarily assigned when I upgraded my dish, although 1150 is my assigned transonder, and that's what I went back to after the config of my terminal completed. I noticed that because I saw my sig strength drop a couple points when registering, and that prompted me to look closely at the stats.
  3. No, not just the dish. It was the dish, transmitter, and feedhorn. And it's not as difficult as you think. You have more sat experience than I did when I started out. You just need the right equipment and some patience. A good compass, inclinometer, and a BirdDog Sat meter make the job much easier. The larger dishes are much harder to aim and skew correctly, mostly because they seem to give so-so performance and can be forgiving with bad aim, but won't perform at their peak unless they're spot-on.
  4. TonyP56: I did the original install, and the 1.2m upgrade myself. Got a smokin' deal on eBay. Spent about 400 bucks for the upgrade to the larger dish. Very well worth the $
  5. Perhaps its cached on Direcway "acceleration" servers from other DWay users downloading it?
  6. This can't be accurate, but my browser (IE 6.0.379.0) is reporting: 830 KB/sec. That's way beyond the capabilities of my ISP (Direcway w/ 1.2m dish and consumer plan). Internet Explorer's gotta be goofing on this one. Here's a testmy test done just seconds ago: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 1064 Kbps about 1.1 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 130 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Fri Dec 30 21:40:42 CST 2005 Bottom Line:: 19X faster than 56K 1MB download in 7.88 sec Diagnosis: Looks Great : 15.53 % faster than the average for host (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-EAUJSKZTW
  7. Hey tonyp56, I'm in Oklahoma as well. Also on the consumer plan pointed at 89W:1150 I had a considerably low signal, I think (62-64) with the .74m dish, but always cross-polled at 80 or higher. Trouble is, even a light rain would knock me out, so I upgraded to a 1.2m dish. Now I hold a 90+ signal, cross-poll at 98, and haven't lost my uplink in snow or rain since getting the larger dish. Not that we've had much rain here in the last couple months, but you know that already. I'm just outside of Okmulgee, in the small community of Wilson. What part of the state are you in?
  8. Commodore VIC 20. 86502 Processor with 3583 bytes of RAM and a noisy tape drive. Then I got a 720k floppy disk drive and that's when things really started moving...

    HOSTING

You'll be just fine. I've been freelance developing Internet based business applications and hosting them for the last 4 years. The biggest line I used for hosting to multiple locations was a synchronous 512K line. I served 4 locations with 10 + users in each location and it worked just fine. If your site will use database connections, put the database on the same server as the web site to reduce connection latency. The one thing I did do to make sure no one user saturated the line was to throttle connections per user. File downloads were the only activity that engaged the throttles, and in the real world I never had to many users downloading at once. Just make sure your site runs clean...ie optimize your images, empty unused variables right away, and close db connects as soon as they're not needed. There's a lot of poorly written sites out there that could run great on half the bandwidth if they cleaned up their messy code.

  12. Hell yes. I had Sprint Wireless before Sprint owned the franchise. I used to live in AZ and the company that helped develop the technology was called "Speedchoice". I routinely saw 5 mb, then Sprint bought them out, oversold the market, and average speeds dropped to less than 1 mb. You're getting a good bang for your buck. Just curious...what are they charging for this service now?
  13. Are you getting any kind of a "system is shutting down" warning prior to these shutdowns? If not(or maybe you just haven't seen them), check your event logs for shutdowns ordered by the NT System Authority. That would be indicitive of an MSblaster varient.
  14. I should have pointed out I'm downloading some software on another networked machine...so that's why my test above was slower.
  15. Depends on "normal". Direcway would say that falls in the "up to 700K" range. I'd say it's horrible. Here's my speed test (pro plan, pointing at IA8), tyical for me during these hours. :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 632 Kbps about 0.6 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 77 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net/ (server2) Test Time:: Sun Dec 18 19:12:34 CST 2005 Bottom Line:: 11X faster than 56K 1MB download in 13.3 sec Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 68.32 % of your hosts average (direcpc.com) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-RGW7PSK6L
  16. I don't know what to make of this Rev guy either. He seems frindly and helpful, but when I checked out his site a couple months ago he was trying to convince some guy that IA8 (89 west bird) wouldn't work for DW7000 accounts and that the guy should ask for a re-point. I joined the forum and asked him what he was talking about...seeing as how I was posting on his board via IA8 with a DW7000. He removed the whole topic within an hour. Not very honest if you ask me.
  17. That's pretty bad, James. Here's a few questions to help me figure out how to help you. 1. How long ago was your system installed? 2. Did your installer have any trouble getting your dish to properly cross poll? (if you know what that means) 3. What is your system cross polling at now? (hint: go to http://192.168.0.1/stats/acp/acpShow.html in your browser and look at the line item Last Revalidate Isolation...what's that number?) 4. Just curious...what's your recieved signal strength? You can see this at http://192.168.0.1/fs/advanced/advanced.html as line item Signal Strength. This can vary by bird and your location, and the current weather. I believe anything over 47 is useable, but ideally you want a much higher number. You have the same package I do, and we are both pointed at the same bird. My setup is fairly simple; I have a Linksys 54G router in between my DW7000 and my PC, and this is an average speed test for me. You should see numbers like this as well: :::.. 19. I bought one of the 1.2 meter SP series dishes...it has a permanent hydrophobic coating that sheds everything like water off a duck's back. Then I built a homemade housing for the feedhorn out of clear plastic...vented at the bottom to keep temperatures even and prevent condensation. I'll post a pic of that one of these days. To check out the SP dishes, click here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,13514201?hilite=vonage+professional+installation
  20. Actually, fikester, I avoided that scenario altogether.
  21. Okay. I won't actually do that, but I will say that I ran a speed trial before I peaked, and it was about 95kbit down. Figured that was about right for Rate code 128 1/2, which was all it would pull being that bent out.
  22. fikester : Actually, I disagree with ME too. (but only about the "gotta be on IA8" thing.) My info was a little outdated on that. Otherwise, I still agree with everything else I posted earlier. resopalrabotnick: Why would I do that???
  23. Figured I should at least post some speed tests to back up my previous post.
  24. Grounding the 7000 dish should not be relative to download speed, although if you live in an area with frequent lightning storms I wouldn't recommend skipping the grounding process. Although static buildup due to a non-grounded dish could play havoc in one form or another, it's not going to fry a satellite transponder either. The idea that FCC regulations prevent an end user from doing a self install or re-point is a debate that's been raging for quite awhile.
