  1. thanks for the input ninjageek , I guess a dual core would be more than enough for my use , and that is the way I am thinking of going, it will be a AMD chip, as that is realy all I know , I guess I need to study some more , I have been looking at the prices of socket A cpu's, S/H for a 3.2 in the uk , at around $100 USD, but hard to find , so I may cut my loses and build a new dual core box , BTW I had a HP dual core in to re-load , after, the performance score topped any thing I had seen b4 , and it was sure fast in every day tasks , and started my "wont one thoughts "
  2. dlewis23 Welcome to rip of Great Britain , , sorry you found out the hard way , none of our Hotels are that great , the meals wouldn't keep a pigeon alive for a day , I got friends that have visit the states , they reckon just the breakfast alone would keep them alive for a week , we actually have UK citizens suffering from malnutrition in 2007 but the upside is,we don't have an obesity problem
  3. ain't that the truth dlewis , lots of folk in the States say ain't Britain cute , good old England , it's lovely , so old fashioned , LOL Bro try paying the taxes , petrol now $ 9.50 USD a gallon taxed at @ 76% , and a reasonable hotel in London around $300 USD a night without meal's , now we are worrying where have all the American tourist's gone , Bro the writing is clearly on the wall , BTW, anyone from the USA thinking of visiting the UK , especially for the 2012 Olympics , give me a PM for updates , and prices , I maybe able to help ,
  4. thanks for the input Coknuck , my puter speed seems OK , and I don't do games either , I am beginning to think as I get older maybe my puter is getting faster ,, but I figure one last upgrade is near on due , so maybe a better spec puter with Vista may see me out , this isn't a morbid or funny post , just me being pratical , I have some friends on Pentium 2's and win 95 who are happy with that , just for e-mail and word 97 , although they give me headaches at times . I guess I am trying to convince myself the old dog ain't past it yet , and I need an excuse to build again , dam I just been told by a lady "friend " that in old boys the eyesight goes first , followed by the sex drive , then puter ability , another friend lost I guess , ............
  5. why F**Kp a good desk top Pic tha changes daily ( microsoft wall paper changer ) IMHO, my way is =
  6. , get off the viking kick Bro they aint coming back , we now have costal defence over here edit, or we have coastal defence
  7. dam, I keep getting heads up on Mac's , I got friends that have used them at work , but I have never tried one, I think they may be even more unpopular over here in the UK, maybe it is a cost thing ?, as most puter stuff is +100% more in the UK, most super store dual core Win puters work out at $900 USD, in the UK , even if I build my own it will cost $700 USD , but it would be to my spec..and upgradeable , BTW iMac prices UK http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=7B723664&node=home/shop_mac/family/imac P.s UK wages are about on the same level as USA, = $2 USD to
  8. yes I have spybot res. and with the missing address bar that is 2 strikes and out for me , do I need this ? when sp3 full is going to be released in first quarter 2008 ?, I always figured it was not a good idea to be the first in the queue on a new release, . puter stuff or cars , , Just my way of thinking I guess , Why should I be the unpaid test dummy ?
  9. dammit, am I the only one running the oldest box on TMN forum ? I built it about 4 years back , it's a 2.5 athlon Xp + with 1 gb of ram , nvidia GF 6200 vid card and cheapo AsRock M/B and Xp Pro , , so my specs don't appear in my Sig , in 2008 I may build again , once I figure out this dual core X Quad core mystical stuff I keep reading about on TMN forum , and this is my #1 puter , I got lots of Pentium 2 's kicking about , so for a change, can anyone beat that as a misery puter spec ? , well it does what I need , but this is a kinda are you happy with what you got type of question , if not what are your plans/dreams for puter related stuff for 2008 ? or even deeper, convince me I need to upgrade I indeed may listen to your suggestions , but I do have a selective hearing problem
  10. Hi jeffwalker... first ,Merry Christmas " or seasonal greeting whichever is suitable , you are tempting me to give SP3 a try, maybe I will try it on my spare puter , as I like the sound of "faster " and with my old boxes I could do with any speed increase I can get ,
  11. thanks Coknuck, I see it is a pre -release , and comes with this warning "do not use this software on primary or mission critical systems." and as I am allways on a mission I am going to give it a miss , I just hope it slipstreams OK onto the original Xp disk , and I have restore turned off on my machine , I just do a monthly ASR shadow copy , that way if I hit problems , the hard drive gets formated , and it reloads Xp sp2 back on in about 20 mins. along with of all the programs ,
  12. Hmmmmm, think I might wait on Sp3 release, I can still remember the early version of Win. ME that had the year 2000 bug , and woulden't restore without a patch , the patch worked ok , but lost the previous restore points , ,
  13. OK sound seems to be ok on your puter , what program to record live messenger are you using , and is it free ? are there any options regarding select sound source ?
  14. a parent is not always around or gives 2 shits while the child is either on the internet or playing a violent vid game that he has borrowed from a "friend ", , and is not Porn ( whatever that is , .... ) a route to degradation of women , ? , OK we have a G/F or wife that we treasure dearly , but as soon as we are able we tune into porn to turn us on , are we not leading a double life there ? and what sort of example are we setting or Kids , don't do as I do, do as I say ? OK , for me I don't dont porn , never have , not because I am a prude , but because I ain't a spectator , what the other guy does is his business kind of thing , maybe I have been lucky all my G/f's have been flexible on that , but what worries me is, do violent Vid games harm the future development of children , I just think it,srange that you can't go to war , with all it's horrors till you are 18 y , but violence's is available at any time no matter how immature you may be , Hey Guys I don't know the answer to this , so I am asking .
  15. Manhunt 2 ( cert.18+)was banned in the UK in June 2007 The judge said: "I have taken into account the high public interest in the possibility of harm to children." final result of the court case will be in Jan.08, but if the BBFC looses the case they will have to pay for the lost sales since Aug.07, I guess Rockstar has already lost the case IMHO British censors have won the right to fight the UK release of video game Manhunt 2 in the High Court. A judge accepted the British Board of Film Classification's argument that the game had been approved for release on a misinterpretation of the law. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7156169.stm anyone got a view on violent vid games and there affect on children ? and is any form of censorship right or wrong , personally I think it's morally right that things should be censored if Children would be able to view it , but the internet isn't censored in the free world and I am easy on that , so I am applying double standards there ,
  16. so do the other 150,000 talk talk subscribers , ....... still I ain't laughing either , it rates higher than my ISP, PipeX.com
  17. any working sound card should be OK , onboard or PCI card , I think it is a software problem , are you getting sound OK before recording ? , and from Cd's etc ,
  18. Ronnie 7118 thanks on that, as I was thinking you had found the miracle ingredient as I had put you down as within 1000 yards of the exchange , I am working on a theory on line voltage , it is 50-51 volts dc at the exchange , I only see 48volts dc at my end , I guess due to line resistance over length ? , this may well be a clue to line speed , and nobody else seems to be working on that theory , the 50-51volts I got from a BT line engineer , and I am not suggesting folks should try testing this themselves sorry Mike can't help there on ports ,I don't use a router, just a pci card adsl modem , it's faster than a usb modem for me ,
  19. Hi ninja ... Try this link from a google search http://johnbokma.com/messenger/capturingwebcam.html although I think you should tell the other person you are recording the vid chat
  20. Hi ronnie 7118 ouch, what plan were you on ? most 8 Mb UK broad band is around 14.99 -
  21. Hi and welcome ronnie7, I am amazed you got 7.9Mbps with a 10 mile line lenght with BT, BT guide to Speed X line lengh , Line length <3km, possibility of an 8Mbps line speed Line length <5km, possibly 4Mbps Line length <6km in the region of 1 to 2Mbps Line length <7km, 0.5Mbps and possibly up to 1Mbps Ultra long lines, the old Home 250 is still available, but a Max service may sync right down to 160kbps http://www.farina1.com/bookmark/000004/2005/02/27/00020260.HTM,
  22. your descion makes sense to me as they own the line to the exchange , so you shouldent get caught in the"it's a Bt problem /ISPproblem syndrome ,and getting shunted back and forth , got a friend on BT he is very happy now , he had some initial problems , but now gets 6Mbps but he is only a mile from the exchange , the only doiwnside I can see is the BT cost , thanks for the head up on the BT phone and broard band , I will look into that ,
  23. Me too Bro , but the tide will change ................................maybe and have you noticed burgers are getting smaller these days ? and for sure petrol is getting dearer $9.50 USD a gallon in the UK
  24. good luck Mike I still mistrust the "Should , possibly , up to , etc ) nobody can say "will get ", which I find extraordinary in these Hi-Tech times , it still seems to be "the proof is in the pudding " I see some ISP's are now offering a 30 day trial period , from the day you order , then take 3 weeks to get it up and running , then if you complain of slow speeds they say wait for the 10 days it takes for the line adaptive rate to settle ,all LOL you are out of the 30 day trial period line rate adapts in the first 75 mins. after that it is all down hill , but will reset the sync. rate at any time , to give best connection without drop outs , changing the modem/router can cause this to adapt + or - Line Attenuation, lower is better , your 48db is close to mine @ 45 db , so BT's 2-3 Mbps looks about right , and within the UK average % range on 8 max adsl I am hearing good reports on BT as an ISP , but I may well chose Be.There .com , but ain't happy with the extra charge for e-mail , only 4 months to go , post back and let us know , who you have gone with , and your speeds ,I shall be moving ISP's in late Jan 08 ,
  25. My ISP hasen't been paid for 4 months ,( Bank mistake ) and I have been with PipeX for 3 years , I had to use a Virgin.net Email address when first signed up to keep me informed of the order status at that time , they were sending the non- payment reminders to the old email address , but they sorted it fast and gave me a month free , but I did say when I fired up Maxthon browser , BTW I still prefer it to I.E. 7 ,
