Yea I think The riaa for the most part has just given up. They were loosing cases and paying out to much money. They also had all this bad press. And I think the final thought would be is ok you have all this money how you gonna divide it up? I do know a guy that a year ago got the court aperance letter from the Riaa. He showed, Told them to check his harddrive they would find nothing. They simply dismissed the case against him. Think they caught on to his hint of bite me I will just swap harddrives and the new harddrive has Linux on it. Now prove I did it.

I have always found it handy to keep a extra harddrive around just incase mine fails if ya know what I mean.

So I get my first letter in the mail. My cable company was contaced by the dreded riaa bla bla bla. So I decide just to let this one slide. While the last Year or so I have been a super good boy I have in the past been not such a good boy. What happend was I set up a wifi for my laptop. My lazy butt never set up the security. Its just a cheep belkin router. Someone leached and It bit me in the behind. Well long story short. I set up my security. Used google. Learned my lesson. I just wanted to post this to remind others. Secure your wireless router with passwords. Use google or ask around. Or you two may someday get your first letter from your cable company. I did call the cable company was gonna disconect it, they DID NOT like that idea at all. Told them what happend. They said don't worry, Just dont let it happen again or I may get disconected. And while I can never swear to it, I think My ol Lady was messing with stuff She should not of and it gave her a good scare. So in the end my first letter was probally a good thing. I live in such a small town, and while I will NEVER leach or use someone elses wireless, From my home alone I found 3 diffrent Unsecured WiFis.

Just a update. BIG mistake. I made the jump to 20 Mbps From 8Mbps. The only time I saw the speeds was about 2 in the morning. During the day I got 4 maybe 5, By 10.30 I could get 10 or 11 Mbps. Talked to tech support a few times, they could see the problem but no idea how to fix it. Tired everythig, Reset the modum several times no luck. Finally gave up and Went back to 8Mbps. Speeds are fine now. I pull 7.6 or a tad more No matter what time of day. There solid and stay consistent. Live and Learn. Will Just stay with what I have. Works for me.
-
Right now I have a 8 mbps connecton. I can jump it up to 20 for 60 bucks. Think I pay 45 for the 8mbps. Not sure what others are paying for the 20 mbps?? Any one have the 20 ?? How much you paying for it??. I can get Phone service for 30 bucks which is something I wanns do. Hate cell phones and 30 a month seems fair. My 8 meg connection is 45 and cable is 55 I think??? The 20 meg, My phone, my cable will run close to 150.00. Thats the package deal Because I already have there cable and internet. My cable company (mediacom) is turning into a wall mart type business. Your thoughts??

buying new hardware need some advice.........

Seems of Late with video Cards its more of what will fit in your case. They are getting super long. Seen Lots of comments on how someone wanted to upgrade there video card but the new one simply would not fit into there case. I would not even be going through this upgrade but Was to lazy and never got around to getting myself a decent surge protector. That bit me in the a@#. Just thankful It did not get my motherboard. Sure seemed to get everything else. So My setup Got 4 gig of new ram, A new processor, went with the dual core 3Ghz. I am just your average gammer and thats about it so a dual core is all I need. Decided to get the new Keyboard because I always wanted a gammer type keyboard and The one I got simply looks cool and got some good reviews on several sites. The mouse is another upgrade I been wanting to do. Just been doing it a bit at a time. With the video card and mouse that should finish up my upgrading. Yes I got a really good surge protector so It should get me by for a couple of years then I will build new one. Strange, I bought a new cpu fan a few months ago but never put it in and dont rember why? So When I installed my new Cpu and put the new fan in as well. I saved all my old stuff so I just had a old dual core laying around that I used until the new one was bought. Last thing to do is replace my harddrives but that no big hurry and I will buy them Local. Just watch for sales. Upgrading is no fun and hope with this one I am done. -
Gonna buy some new hardware and need some imput. This is the mouse I am looking at..........http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826104076 Here Is the video car I think I will go with......http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130470 I went with that video card because no complaints it was to long and needed only one hook up to power the card. In short think thats about the best card for my power supply (450) and seems to fit. Oh If you care this is my new keyboard. While I did not get it from tiger direct, I found a better place to get it I hope with free shipping. Crossing my fingers it all works out.......................http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=2935483&sku=M17-1861&srkey=MICROSOFT%20RECLUSA%20GAMING%20KEYBOARD

I would think password protecting the bios is your best line of defence agains this. So any changes to the bios must enter a password first to change. May not be a bad Idea to tell everyone to do the same. If this thing gets out it could be a huge mess.
-
I had No clue there was a virus that got ahold of the Bios?? And of course there is no way a scanner will catch it. I have been using google to find out more but not allot of information. I pass word protect my bios to keep anyone from changing it. I can with this motherboard also set it so it wont ask for the bios password every time you boot but to change anything with in the bios you need a password. The way I understand what I have found so far its One nasty virus. They say even a reflash of the bios will not get rid of it. In short you have to replace a chip on the motherboard itself?? Seen talk there are a few floating around, of course everything goes in cycles so I guess in time it could be a problem again. Just hope someone comes allong to better explain it.

The one game I am playing again is OLD. Its manhunt. Yea everything is updated. I know how to toggle it back on so its no biggie. Always have a backup of my OS with ghost so even if things turn south Its cool. Just learning the ins and outs of windows 7 so when it does go final I can hit the ground running.
-
Thank you Buntz that did the trick.........made everything look better on this 22 inch screen. Also was not sure about if I should disable DEP so I could run older window games. Seems like the general oppinion is its ok to do so and safe.
-
The picture below. The bookmark from the browser. Trying to make the text bigger.
-
I did find out how to play older games in Windows 7. Just not sure how smart it is to disable DEP. Maybe someone with more vista knowledge can chime in and let us know if disableing DEP is ok safe or way to dangerous to do.
-
When you open the browser, You hit the bookmarks, That drop down menu you see for all your bookmarks, or you right click on a icon, the menu that opens up. I tried a screen capture for the bookmark thing but no luck. Thats the menu I am trying to change.
-
Ok that helped buntz. I am on windows 7 as well, never had vista on this box, well I did put it on a for a bit..........then removed it. Found on the control panel to change the settings to icons. That helped. Still working on learning it. Now just gotta figure out how to adjust the menue size and settings. Hope someone can help with that.
-
While Its not really vista. Its windows 7. I simply have yet to figure out how to increase the menu size. The setting that when you open the browser and hit the bookmarks, that menu opens up. I can do it no problem in Xp just not sure how to do it in vista. Also how do I get to the setting that stops the monitor from shutting off after 15 min of no activity? Oh one last one, How to turn of system restore? I use norton ghost so system restore is something I don't need. Will say a long time user of Xp this jump to windows 7 has not been as bad as I figured it would be. Google has helped tons. I thank you tons in advance.

I finally got off my lazy butt and looked into the hole dual core vs quad core. They way I am understanding it is this. If your into multi-tasking allot, Do a allot of video editing and ripping of dvd/Cds and or running dual monitors then go with a quad. If your just your average gammer, then Dual is the way to go. How much disposible cash you have is a biggie as well. Quads are super expensive compared to the duals. Speaking from experience with Video cards I found, With just a dual core and and cheep 8800gt card I can run Even Crysis full blast as well as microsoft filght simulator X with expansion pack. . With windows 7 heading our way, if that OS works out and I think it will, how big and bad a video card is will almost be a mute point. If you really want to spend 300 or more dollars on a video card thats cool, its your cash. IMHO a video card in the 150 range will be just fine. Windows 7 is supposed to utilize the cpu when the video card is unable to keep up. Again, from the way I understand things, the bottleneck (your computer gets slowwwww) is not in the cpu. Its more of a motherboard issue.. Some believe a quad will really speed up the average computer. I simply dont think it works that way. Its not the cpu thats the issue. Its manily the motherboard issue. Data can only tavel as fast as the motherboard can carry it. I am NOT so much a hardware geek. I am more software informed. Just started picking up info when the quad cores hit. I wanted to know is more better. Generally speaking Its not looking to good for the quads. Just my 2 cents.
-
Really it depends on what you want and just how much you want to spend. Imho Dual Cores are still the way to go. The quads just don't have the software to really utilize all 4 cores. They even say with games the quads see a preformance loss compared to the dual cores. I will slap a new 2.9 dual core with 4 gig of matching ram and a nice surge protector and the total cost is about 160.00. Now if I would of spent the cash on the surge protector the first time I would not be doing this upgrade. With up upgrades and windows 7 think my box should be good to go for a couple two or three years. If I was gonna build I would go with a barebones setup. Something like to start out, http://www.cpusolutions.com/8004744cpu/customkititems.asp?kc=ANF2 Then add to it as money allowed. Just my 2 cents. With the upgrades and the Amount of time I have already had this box, I will probally get 7 or 8 years before its time for a new build.

Ahhhhhhh now that makes sense. Not the problem with the link itself but the site it is hosted on. Figured there was some good reason. Just hated to ask, sound like I am complaning like a littel girl. Never stoped to think about the site itself being the problem. But makes sense. My bad. Sorry about that mistake.
-
They must of changed there minds. I just my key yesterday. Activated just fine.
-
Yea its beta, The only place to get it is from a torrent site. Not sure why there was a problem with the link buts its cool. Microsoft has no problems with anyone putting this on there machine.
-
Its strange. Microsoft really does not care who has this on there computer. Seems like the key thing is just a trial run. Anyone can get a free key from microsoft, really takes no time at all. I think its hey here is a free trial of it, use it. This thing gets released its gonna be Huge. Microsoft really learned there lessons from vista. They have even made changes because of user imput. Sorry about the link Was not sure about it. Think this Windows 7 will be the next Xp. Everyone will use it and hang on to it as long as possible. Just hope the price is not silly expensive. One thing is forsure. My xp is still faster to boot than Windows 7.
