  1. Did get to see Microsoft finally got around to putting up the OEM pricing of windows 7. 135 bucks for pro 175 for ultimate. So that's not bad. I will say I am kinda surprised. While Yea I knew they would release a OEM versions of Windows 7, I figured they would wait til after the holidays to sell OEM and see what they could get on the regular price. New egg is offering the OEM for preorder. They say its a sale, I am almost sure the prices will hold after the "sale". Right now they are not making you buy any hardware, Like a mouse or something to get the OEM.
  2. Its almost been a trip to the twilight zone for me. My Computer Died. It was simply the Power button went bad. How many times has ANYONE ever seen this happen. Odd. So I decide I am gonna upgrade my Computer anyway. Order a bare bones setup Went with the AMD Phenom 550. Get it and switch out the Cpu fan. I had a better one In my old case. Start looking at the motherboard, Oh man. My Old harddrives no good. Have to Switch to SATA. I had IDE Ok. Get that delt with.No Biggie. I keep everything backed up. Now its SLOW to boot. Drove me crazy what could be the problem. It turns out to be my Keyboard is bad. Are you kidding me. First a Power Button then a keyboard?? What are the Odds?? So any one have such strange problems with there computer?
  3. Few Ideas for ya to fix xpl Try advanced system care. Iolo bit dot com free works goodl Try Hijack this. If your unsure how to use it I can help. Hijackthis.de will read the files. Back up what you can. If nothing else reinstall Windows. Backup Xp with Ghost or Acrons. I prefer Ghost. I have a cheep 250 external harddrive I got from wall mart for 70 bucks will fit in my front pocket hooks up usb. Its a Segate. GREAT for backing suff up. If it were Me. I would Try advanced system care, Run Hijackthis through it. See if that helps. If neither one helped. Back up what I could and do a reinstall.
  4. Mud I think I am about the only one that has nothing but horrid results with Linux .Tried Ubuntu and Few other flavors. I find Xp more well behaved. But I will say generally speaking I think if your not a gamer and Just wanna surf then For Sure use Linux. Myself I am a gamer and I really like messing with OS and trying different things. Keep a Clean copy of Xp with updates backed up with norton ghost. I have said to others, Try Advanced System Care from iolo bit, Its free and really does make a difference.
  5. I have never agreed with overclocking anything. You willing to risk loosing your cpu and locking up your pc for what will probably be a very small gain. If you can, Upgrade if needed. If you don't have the cash, There are several ways to improve performance. IO bit has a simple free program called game booster. Works great, Safe to use. Will offer way better results with out any danger and save you countless hours and tons of reading trying to overclock. Always, Always take into account its easy to brag with text on a screen. Its easy to talk about how someone over clocked this or that and it sooo much faster. Take that with a BIG grain of salt. Its your hardware, Your PC, You ready to trust some text on the screen and risk having to replace your computer? Be safe, The tweakers can be hardcore, and yet at the same time mostly full of green cheese.
  6. In a few days I am gonna try this on Sim3. My GF is a sims junkie. If someone else tries it before I do let me know if it works. If not I will let you know. If I am not back for lets say a week, It failed and I am probably buried under my porch .
  7. And Lastly are you feeling Brave I have spent Last few months off and on trying to figure out how to backup my settings in winamp. Googled it bla bla bla. There were other programs I wanted to back up the settings as well. Well I googled forever. Stumbled across a program that MAY just work. So I tried it. I will be dogged......It worked?? I about fell down. If your gonna try this. Use system restore just in case!!! I gave this the full run. I mean I have TONS of music on my computer and in winamp. Set system restore. Went to the Plugin Path. Gulp. Deleted the Whole folder. Restarted Winamp. Nothing there where my music once was. So now either I finally figured it out or I am a COMPLETE IDIOT!! Ran the install program......It Worked!! Everything came back. Again I about fell down. I used a free program called install creator. It was pretty easy to use. If you want to try it and unsure give me a shout I will walk ya through it. Just do what I did. Cover yourself. Then try it. If this just helps one person. Well worth it. And with this info it should work for other settings you may need to back up. The theory is sound. Just try it. Back up first, Make your install program. Delete the settings. Make sure there gone. then run the program you made. Sorry this so wordy, Im on my 4th cup of coffee .......... I want to add install creator has a simple wizard. You simply put in the full path of the file you want to back up. Right click hit properties in the box that says path copy and paste it. It will give you other pointless options for license, Icons the next important screen wants you to put the path to put the files back in. Same as above. Then it makes it. Save it to your desktop. Its just that easy.
  8. Well they may feel like with piratebay getting shut down, They may of finally slowed the file sharing network. Oh how wrong they are. There is a new trend that more and more are finding. There are countless websites that allow the free uploading and downloading of files. Megaupload being the best at this point and time. Free to upload, Free to download. Now there are forums all over the place that offer links to these type of Files placed in storage on Lots of different free online storage websites. So Now they just drove file sharing deeper underground, Makes it super hard to track down who is downloading what, Who is uploading what. As well prove you downloaded a file knowing it was this movie, that program, While this is still wrong and I don't condone it, And No I will not provide any links, It just goes to show, It will never be stopped, In fact it may grow worse.
  9. My laptop is on a wireless router. its a belkin if that matters. Anyway, while this is on wireless how to I figure out what my download speeds should be? On my wired desktop computer I get 8000 down. Any Ideas?
  10. Oh man I sure hope you dont think your nuts going the route you are. I just ran across this thread not long after seeing some hardcore hardware geeks giving a novice user advice about video cards and cpus. Even saw something on toms hardware about the amd 3200 could never handle crisis with the best agp video card. I so disagree the 3200 with The 8800 gts pci-e handles crysis just fine. But maybe the agp card can not. Saw someone doubt I could run it and run it on high settings with no lag and no stuttering. While there is no way to prove it it can be done. I take care of my computer, Used iobits game booster, All is well. My hard drive is defragged, No spyware, No virus, No Pointless software starting with my computer. On a side note, I for a short time dual booted windows 7 and Xp Tweaked just the way I like. I still boot xp faster. And using the free search program "everything" Can find those silly files that sometimes get lost just as fast as windows 7 can. But I will Say windows 7 up to this point seems a little more well behaved. Lets just hope microsoft fixes dont mess that one up
  11. Oh I agree. If you can upgrade cheep and you have the disposable income rock on. Just drives me crazy the hardcore gamer/employee of the video card and or processor will spout so much B.S. With the economy the way it is I would be willing to bet some really stretched the budget because they bought into the whole this video card that processor will never run this or that game. Really don't think most need the quads and the dual video cards. Oh sure they brag how much faster it is. Its either B.S. or simple placebo effects. I just shake my head when I see the Overclockers with the liquid cooling. Really whats the point? Its like owning a doge viper and living in the Midwest. No Place to get that car up to its real speeds. Sure you can dump 1500 to 2 grand into a super P.C. but really you would be lucky to use 20 percent of its potential. In my Pretend world there would be a simple free program that you can run, it is honest and tells you what games you can run. It would also tell you Its not your hardware slowing you down its your lack of maintaining your computer. Run C Cleaner and Defrag your harddrive and you have way to many unnecessary process running in the background. Just glad for now they have the free program "game booster" that really helps. iobit.com. Be cool if they had a website or whatever that would find games like crysis and see just how little hardware they can get away with and still play it. For a fact the 8800gts and 3200 dual core amd ran it just fine.
  12. Finally someone that agrees with me. The whole video card/Processor seems to be a bit over the top. While I had to replace my video card I went with gts 250 with nvida drivers, I would of never replaced it had my 8800 went bad. Heck the 8800 played all the games even crysis. Looked good, played smooth. Just seems like so many want to jump up there computer's processor or video card when really there is no reason to imho. My dual core amd dual core 5600 plus Just moves right along. Maybe its all about the bragging, or its like having a super fast car with no place to push it to the max. With windows 7 coming out it does not take near the resources that even xp used. Not trying to flame or slam. Just never understood the whole thought process. I mean yea you have a single core it pays to jump to the dual. Up to this point Im not impressed with the quad cores yet. But if your doing lots of video editing and or graphics work the quads may work ok fine for ya. If you just a pc gammer just can not see going any higher than the dual core at this point. Just my 2 cents.
  13. Yea Fan Is working. Its A Pci-E Express Card. Evega Gts 250. Has the same connector your talking about. The Software that came with it shows everything is ok So I am gonna assume all is well.
  14. Yea thats it mud. Um Question Man. The Video card either works or it does not work right? It would not still work if it was not getting enough power would it??
  15. I will try to explain this the best I can. Long story short. I need some type of Y power connector that will Let me turn the one 4 wire connector that goes to the back Of my IDE hard drive Into 2, 4 Wire connectors. In short I only have One 4 wire connector for my hard drive and I need 2 of them so I can run Dual Hard drives. Got a new video card and It took my 2nd 4 wire connector that I use for my 2nd harddrive. So now I need the Y adapter. I have a 500 watt power supply with not enough connectors. Hope all that makes sense. Hope you can help, Even a link from newegg or whatever so I can buy it would help as well. I thank ya much.
  16. Been trying to figure out the best way to back up windows 7. Think I have it. Nortons ghost 2003. I tried it a back up and restore and about fell down. It appears to work. Takes all of 10 min with 4.5 gig worth of back up and 5 min or so to restore and it boots just fine. Hope someone else gives it a shot. Of course use system restore and set a point just in case. I still have mine set. Shocked to say the least.
  17. Yea I used the beta for some time. Stable, Fast, Almost all the programs I used worked with it. I think the internet really gave vista a bad rap. Now I never used vista, I was happy with Xp. Reading so many good things about windows 7 and Used the beta for a few months, So far seeing nothing but good things about it. I think vista users had so many problems, Microsoft should give them a free upgrade to windows 7. IMHO think the die hard Xp users will make the switch to windows 7. I am sure in time I will. Even the Linux geeks are giving Windows 7 some positive comments. Time will tell.
  18. Be intresting to see how this works out. It will be free and of course its a linux build. I think this one could give windows a run for its money. Bring Linux to the masses. Hope this works
  19. No leaving your computer on all the time is not gonna hurt it. Unless its getting to hot. Which I have my doubts. I have seen many who see how long they can go without rebooting there computer. Think a year is the longest I have seen. If your worried about heat issues give this a shot. Its free and works ok. http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
  20. I do look for torrents to be no longer used by the masses. Movies can be watched online now with out downloading, Games are so Big to torrent them takes so long and to big of risk. But in the end there will be other sites to take its place. My biggest question is with all the millions and millions of dollars the RIAA has gotten has any of it found its way back to the artists??
  21. Not sure if its been posted yet. If so sorry and you can delete this post. Looks like the Pirate Bay is no more. Its been sold and going legit. Be another pay to download. While I am sure all the posters here never use the site . Just a heads up. I would not start using the site now.. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2009/07/pirate_bay_vision/
  22. There is no way I will ever do the Upgrade thing. That just seems to make windows more unstable. When its released I will go with the full verson probally go with Windows 7 ultimate. Will get it from new egg and go with the oem or whatever verson. They usually offer it at a fair price. I am looking forward to this release. Played with the beta, Nice OS. Xp has run its course and I am ready for something new. Think many are ready for something diffrent than XP. Even the Linux Geeks are looking forward to Windows 7.
  23. Really I found one at my Local Wal-mart. It was a Segate, It was like 250 gig and Paid 60 bucks for it. Its really small. Would fit in a front pocket easy enough. Its Usb and The transfers are really decent. Maybe a Gig a Min?? I may someday get another one. To best describe it, its kinda between a usb stick and Those Kinda big backup drives you see people use. Xp and Windows 7 Both pick right up on the drive when I plug it into my usb port. Just after thinking about it, Why pay 125 bucks for something that big that holds so much information. Sadly hard drives do go bad. So I went smaller, Cheep, And really the best way to back up is to a dvd IMHO. I keep all my important stuff on My backup Harddrive and DVD. Just in case. Just a thought. Have a nice day.
  24. Yea not slamming anyone but of late seems like the download test here has been off and wrong. Think there was a thread and others said the same thing. They for whatever reason were not getting the right results on this web site. Not sure if its been fixed or not?? Just rember to take any download speed tests with a grain of salt. I just have used my browser (opera) for so long and the internet I know when its slow and not acting right.
  25. While I did not come up with this found it long ago I thought I may post it if someone else wanted to use it for there own computer.http://www.tutorial5.com/content/view/99/47/. I put both shutdown and reboot in my quick launch bar. Also if you use peerguardian and utorrent. Make a new text document on your desktop Copy and paste @echo off start "" "C:Program FilesuTorrentuTorrent.exe" start "" "C:Program FilesPeerGuardian2pg2.exe" Now rename the text document utorrentplus.bat. Now open your program files. Create a new folder. Call it Utorrent Plus. Copy and paste the bat file into the folder. Now right click on it and put a shortcut on your desktop. Now when you click on it utorrent and peerguardian will both open at the same time. Both these little tricks work on windows 7.
