  1. Right, but we need him to come back before guessing, were all jumping in there trying to help someone with a question that we aren't even sure of,   :haha: Who knows, maybe he was talking about baking chocolate chip cookies  :haha: Man I hope so, because I  could go for a couple ofem right about now, what about you people  ?

    hotchips.gif

I've seen many a post where the answers are given and the original poster does not give another reply. But then I see some posters have posted the same question over two or three different forum sites.

Yes I am a Google addict. At least my knee has stopped hurting killing me, after fours hours worth of time.

Cookies would go good on top of the chili I just had.

  2. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something, but shockwave has been around for at least 15 years, one of the first, if not the first,  and this is the first time Iv'e ever heard it in a phrase compared to a virus, or malware of any kind.

Too many of these tag along downloads on some things now. Either Symantecs Norton or the Ask.com toolbar. The publisher of what you wanted gets a kick back for the extra distribution of a product that you don't want in the first place

  3. Thanks for all your help guys. I found the Adobe shockwave and uninstalled it , I am waiting to see if that helps now , plus the scans as Tommie suggested. .

The Adobe Shockwave is for a 'richer gaming experience' Bla, Bla, Bla.. It's more Stable than Flash rendered games I've found.

I'd of thought that Symantecs Security Scan would be listed in it's own add/remove line?

Well at least it was not the Ask.com virus.... Well thats what many people call it. Cause they don't read the installer to uncheck the default checked areas. And it don't uninstall cleanly and people have had to go in to various settings in their browsers to eradicate it.

I still default to Dialup days and don't let anything do auto-updates. Then at least I know what is getting downloaded with the updates.

  4. This is what keeps popping up. It just popped up again. It wasnt in the start up menu on power up., Zalternate.

Without looking in to it.... Might you happen to have an ActiveX control sitting in your Internet Explorer?.. tool, internet options, settings, view objects. And then you can right click to check properties of who belongs to the ActiveX controls.

Or since I had some time to look it up. Got Adobe(shockwave flash player for games)? Maybe it was a tag along download. I really, really hate those....  :tickedoff:

Why is Norton Security Scan being distributed with Shockwave Player?

Symantec and Adobe are interested in providing our customers with the best possible user experiences. Norton Security Scan is being offered as part of the Shockwave Player install process as an option to give Adobe Shockwave users the confidence that potential PC threats can be identified through on-demand or weekly security assessments so they can take the necessary steps to remediate these risks and ensure proactive security. Users who do not wish to take advantage of this offer can easily opt out of the installation.

How is Norton Security Scan from Symantec connected to Shockwave Player?

As part of a recent distribution agreement with Symantec, Adobe will offer its customers the option to install the free Norton Security Scan software as part of the Shockwave Player installation process. Only customers who accept the Norton Security Scan offer will download the Norton Security Scan software. Those who decline the offer will download and install only Shockwave Player. Norton Security Scan is only offered to users who have either already downloaded the Google Toolbar or who are not eligible to receive the Google Toolbar offer.

And it should be in the Add/remove programs listings.

  5. My mums computer before I replaced the failing hard drive had the Norton by Symantec updater launch a few times. Was just a remnant that was drifting on the hard drive(you can remove the locator of the program but it still sits on the hard drive), Even after the Norton removal tool had been used on it originally.

Use the MalWareBytes that has been quoted before.

    install update and scan.

You can also go to,,, Start, run, type in  msconfig and then to startup and see if something is set to startup on power up of machine.

  6. Hi zalternate  and Tommie ,

Stange thing is , I use a router with built in firewall and a software  firewall ,

the old sygate ver 5.5  ,it's a bit clunky and does nothing in auto ,the user has to make the descions ,, I like it that way ,

but it gave me no warning of Google updater trying to phone home  , maybe it didn't try ?,

but what realy buged me was google has a built unistaller for the updater ,  and it dosn't work ,

well Google seems to be getting to big for it's boots these days , ref. my post on street view ,

and I found googles browser ( Chrome ) pathetic , LOL ,I must be hard to please ,I never took to firefox either ,

BTW Tommie , I am running AVG 8 ( the free version )  with no problems , apart for getting reminders

to update to AVG 8.5, it seems to be the paid for version  ? but not sure on that

I tried Chrome for a few days when it was first released.  I Didn't really care for the auto updater in the first place. But when I uninstalled it(if I remember all correctly), The Google updater stayed installed and continued to run. And I'm pretty sure that my Firewall told me about it still being there working. As some programs, Since they keep turning on 'Auto Update' when I update them(Java and QuickTime),  I have them set to 'Alert Me' when they want to get on the Internet to update.

I think I just deleted the Google updater folder to ditch it(I'm on a XP 'reinstall' since I had it, so I can't go searching for any remnants).

And isn't Sygate about 4 or 5 years years past the last time it was updated? Damn Symantec buying them out and killing the product.  :knuppel2:  It was a nice Firewall.

And that AVG product version update warnings are now so designed to get people to pay instead of looking for the free version of the same release.

86.63 MB download.. Can you say BLOAT? I knew you could. In the region of Symatecs bloated product lines now.

  7. geeze did that guy shoot that kid??

Nah. Notice the camera angle changes and his crouch is slightly off.  And some here may say that only a gun shooting blanks would smoke like that. Can't have the actor having live rounds bouncing around in that Empty mailbox cylinder.

Was watching a show called Evening Magazine on King5 tv in Seattle. They had a top ten April first hoaxes and one was where an old show called 'Almost Live' , had a fake news break during the show and the fake newsman said the Seattle Space Needle had fallen down, with cut and paste pics of a fallen tower. Many people then overloaded the 911 service cause they did not notice the bits about it being April first, etc. Can't find a video clip.....

         * On April 1, 1989, Seattle area TV program Almost Live! set up a phony broadcast room and dressed actors as TV anchors to pull an April Fool's joke with a mock newscast that reported that the Space Needle had collapsed in a windstorm. The prank featured footage of downed parts of the needle and hysterical eyewitness accounts (also by actors). Local hospitals prepared for the inevitable onslaught of injured patients. One man, whose daughter worked at the Space Needle, in a panic, drove from Spokane to see if his child was safe.[4][15] The end of the skit gave the prank away, but many still believed the broadcast. TV station KING 5, the producer and broadcaster of Almost Live!, later apologized.

EDIT: heres a promo of the show...

  8. Just reading Google news and here is a link to two tests to 'generally' see if you are infected with Conficker.

There is a test button just below "check to see if you are infected".

Interesting test. So if you even have another virus, you may not be able to get the linked pics from the anti-virus sites to show up.

  9. Yea, those are a pain for the uninformed.

After installing something it's good to have a look around for any extra's that you don't actually need(like over zealous auto updaters). And always make sure to read the installer screens, even though some programs don't notify of everything that gets installed.

And when uninstalling there are those extra's that hang around waiting for the program to be installed again.

Some programs put something in to the add-ons in FireFox(A security flaw to many). And sometimes make a mess with instability or the urge to phone home.  But thats what a two way firewall is for. Ask my permission before access to the Internet.  :police:

  10. Have you found a site with just that April Fools look. Post it or at least the link to the Jpeg image...

    An article on it.

New Bios attack renders anti-virus useless

Only solution may be physically removing Bios chip, say researchers

    Iain Thomson in San Francisco

    vnunet.com, 26 Mar 2009

A new form of attack that installs a rootkit directly onto a computer's Bios system would render anti-virus software useless, researchers have warned.

Alfredo Ortego and Anibal Sacco of Core Security Technologies explained that the attack is possible against almost all types of common Bios systems in use today.

The researchers devised a 100-line Python script that could be flashed onto the Bios to install a rootkit. Because the Bios software activates before any other program on a computer when it starts up, normal anti-virus software would be unable to detect it.

"We tested the system on the most common types of Bios," said Ortega. "There is the possibility that newer types of Extensible Firmware Interface Bios may be resistant to the attack, but more testing is needed."

The attack is only possible if the attacker already has full administrative control of the target PC, but this is possible through a standard virus infection. Once that is achieved, the malware operator would be able to flash a rootkit directly onto the Bios.

Even if the initial virus was detected and removed, the computer would still be under remote control. A full wipe of the hard drive and complete reinstallation of the operating system would not remove it, the researchers warned.

If a sophisticated rootkit was put onto the Bios it could be even more difficult for an administrator to debug the system, according to Ivan Arce, chief technology officer at Core Security.

"You would need to reflash the Bios with a system that you know has not been tampered with," he said. "But if the rootkit is sophisticated enough it may be necessary to physically remove and replace the Bios chip."

The attack vector is also usable against virtual systems, the researchers said. The Bios in VMware is embedded as a module in main VMware executable, and thus could be altered.

However, it is possible to protect against this attack by locking down the Bios chip from flash updates, either physically or by password-protecting the system against unauthorised changes.

"The best approach is preventing the virus from flashing onto the Bios," said Sacco. "You need to prevent flashing of the bios, even if it means pulling out jumper on motherboard."

  12. these are my download speeds... there has to be something wrong

    share2-SA4G72C9B

Generally when both your download and upload are showing slow, that could mean the dish is out of alignment.

I am guessing you have the HN9000 modem, so you would be on the newish satellite spaceway3,For new installs.. you should also use at least the 1.5MB test for testing speeds.

type in to your browser  192.168.0.1  to access your modems error codes and it should say your connection stats. Your receive signal strength should be in the 150 range (very roughly). I am on DSL, so it is from other posts that the information comes from....

And latency could be in the 600ms range , but software on the system makes it in the 1000ms range. To enable more customers to get on the system.

  13.  [nerdly]  All is well now. At first I thought it was my puter cause I have lots of trojans that AVG pulled off after running my vcleaner first, and one more threat detection popped up about 2 am , right when I was getting ready to shut down for the night.

So might you know where you got the Trojans from?

    Just curious.  :cool2:

And I hope they fix that security hole in FireFox with the 'unauthorized' Add-Ons. If you install something and it puts in a Add-On with out asking? Thats a security hole. There is the permission whitelist for a website install that is being by-passed by downloading a program and then installing that way.

  14. Another version for Pr0n mode on airplanes is....

    http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7209557.html

Apparatus and method for computer screen security

    Document Type and Number:

    United States Patent 7209557

    Abstract:

A combination of software and hardware renders the computer screen incomprehensible to onlookers. The software consists of a computer program that scrambles the organization of the image on the computer screen. The hardware consists of a set of glasses that reorganizes the scrambled image on the computer screen so that the authorized user can comprehend the image. In an alternate embodiment, the scrambled image is transmitted by cable or wireless transmission to a set of display glasses with an embedded personal display computer that unscrambles the image for viewing at the display glasses.

    And a longer version..

    http://www.patentstorm.us/patents/7209557/description.html

The libraries have a screen on the front of the monitor that has slits that only allows a viewing angle offset to about 10 degrees.

And FireFox has an extension that allows you to change the tab names in the task bar to avoid people reading your minimized window identifier. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2987

  15. Probably more promo than anything for the time it was made. Since speed upgrades have happened for uploads and downloads since then.

But do notice all the 'keywords' he said were accurate. But.... Was his line 'capped' at the package speeds or was it set to be wide open, during the test as an employee putting out a video for all to see on YouTube.
