  1. Modem>Box running smoothwall>16 port Daynastar Hub>Login server/database server+Gameserver+My personal comp.

I was having problems with a hacker gaining access to my database/login server and installing all types of crap...he even left me a note lol. Formatted and setup a box with smoothwall. he is still trying to get in but is having no luck against smoothwall.

He had no problem shutting down kerio firewall even though it was setup strict and password protected. But no love now!!

  2. AMD is the winner for gaming, 2GB of ram would be good as alot of the newer games use well over a gig to run smoothly and load fast.

When looking at the parts there are some things to look out for. Make sure the motherboard and Cpu are compatible (same socket). The NForce 4 chipset is best chipset out as far as i knoe for the AMD 64 series. Main thing is don't cheap out on a PSU. Enermax, antec are 3 that i have experience with and are very good. A low quality PSU is a disaster waiting to happen. They can fry components or whole systems.

  3. I have noticed my bandwidth spiking lately so did a little looking around and have found a process running in task manager called msctrl.exe that i cannot terminate.

Looked at what it was doing in my firewall and there are between 80-100 people connected to me within my ISPs network all leeching small amounts of bandwidth....very strange.

I cannot block it either. Using kerio personal firewall and have it set to block all connections from this application but it still manages to get through.

Running windows xp. Clean of viruses and spyware according to trend micro, panda AV, spybot and ad-aware. A google search turned up absolutely nothing.

    Anybody know anything about this?

  4. So who wants to help me put together a parts list for this server? Kinda like the good ol days and the pimputer :D

I want to build it myself and not order a prebuilt 1. 2u i will go with i think. Also i can order parts as i have the money...i won't be able to save a lump sum for a prebuilt as i am bad with money

  5. Ok bear with me this may be lengthy and i may confuse myself. I have always had just 1 comp connected to the internet and never used a router or hub. I picked up a second computer and a hub both machines will run different parts of a game server.

    Here are some specs

Both boxs are running Windows XP Pro, both connect with onboard Lan.

The Hub is: DaynaStar 16 port hub.

The main box will run the main gameserver only as it is the most resource hungry. The second box will run the login server and the MySQL database for the gameserver.

Problem: Both boxes need to be able to talk to eachother as well as be connectable by users. I only have 1 IP. I don't even know where to start on making this happen. Help me out if you can please.  :)

  6. Thanks for the info swimmer :) I better check the co-locations site a bit better as it is quite a distance from me and i can't go to the actual datacenter.

The test box i have and definetly is a good idea. Servers going SATA..i hadn't heard that until now. SATA 2 is better than than scsi? I have really been outa the loop lately :)

    Thanks

  7. Hello all

I need to build a 1u rackmount server. I run a gameserver from home but it has outgrown my home connection and to send my tower to co-location is to expensive. So alternative is to build a 1u server.

I am good with normal PCs but when it comes to these 1u systems i am lost and need some help.

Here is what the server will be running.

    Gameserver written in java

    Loginserver written in Java

    Database is MySQL

Java being as resource hungry as it is needs a very good CPU or maybe even duals. At least 2GB Ram to start with and upgradeable to 4 or 5 GB. The server software is pretty sensitive when reading writing to the DB so some 15000rpm SCSI drives are probably in order. 2 in Raid0 Or maybe 3 in Raid5.

    Will be connected 100mbit.

I am in Canada so will probably need to order from here:

Buy the looks of things i will need to buy a barebones and add to it.

    Thanks for any help

  8. Try using another browser if you have 1 to make sure its IE. Also can try release IP and renew IP and also flushdns.

To do these go to start>type "cmd" hit enter>type "ipconfig /release">hit enter> type "ipconfig /renew">hit enter> than type "ipconfig /flushdns">hit enter> Done. Of course don't use quotation marks when typing in the commands.

  9. Ok i have been running adsense by google on my site for the last week. Great system i really liked it. Unfortunately a few of the members on the site decided to be helpful and set up macros clicking the ads even though i stated only click if you are interested.

So google suspended my account and i suspended those members. Now i need something similar to adsense to help generate some xtra cash for my gameserver as i just switched to a dedicated server and it is pricey.

So if anybody knows of something similar to adsense or another good company to go through please post it :)

    Thanks
