These are some of my recent 3G results. AT&T's HSPA 7.2 is working its way up the state so in some areas I can get really nice 3G results. The fastest I've seen is 5.4 Mbps.

  2. Cox Cable Ultimate (50/5) Tier, $85/month. Clear victory to the Fox—need another reason to support Open Source software?

Just to let you know, Safari is powered by Web-Kit which is more open source then firefox.

And just because firefox may score higher in a download and upload test doesn't make it better. Firefox still benchmarks slower then Safari and Chrome. Even in Firefox 4, they still don't score 100/100 on acid 3.

  3. You see though...I tried...I actually let command prompt do it, it took almost 18 hours for it to just tell me FAILED! Lol, but if anyone is interested I found a software from HP that'll do a whole 500GB external in less than a hour! It does FAT32 as well and is very basic and user friendly. Here are a couple links, one explains it and one is a download. http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197 <<< Explanation of the software...and here is the download http://en.kioskea.net/download/download-127-hp-usb-disk-storage-format-tool

LOL, you spent 18 hours doing something that should take 30 seconds? What command did you use?

  4. But, But, But MAC's cost so much.

Not trying to turn this into a Mac vs. PC thing but if you were to actually look at a Mac long and hard you would see that for what you get it really doesn't cost that much. Take the 27" iMac for example the display alone costs $1099 http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=224-8284&~ck=bn&~bk=gr:CategoryRec,g:NextStep,rk: and Apple only charges $1699 for the display with the computer.

  5. I jealous. I want one so bad. I have the money to get one right now but I think I may just get an SSD and some other upgrades for my mini. My display right now is 25.5" 1920x1200 -- it's pretty awesome but that 27" iMac display is amazing. Something so awesome that it literally CAN NOT be appreciated unless you see it with your own eyes... the resolution is unreal. I'm still debating getting one right away but I think I'll at least wait for a standard internal BluRay burner.

The resolution doesn't really sound like that big of a difference does it guys? Well let me put this in perspective...

Donnovan now has 3,686,400 pixels in front of his face

    I have 2,034,000 pixels

That's about 1.7 MILLION more pixels... and I have a bad ass monitor and the iMac's screen size is only 1.5in larger than mine. Blows my mind. And if you see it with your own eyes you'll understand. No pictures you can see online or on TV could ever do it justice because chances are what you'd be viewing the information about the iMac on a display that isn't capable of showing it off properly. Apple has come a long way.

    You lucky son of a...

Congrats dude, I want one YESTERDAY!

    -D

Its not just the amount of pixels on the screen. Its the Pixels Per Inch that make the real difference. Your display has only about 80,000 pixels per inch, this one has over 136,000 pixels per inch, it just makes everything look so much better...

Here are some pictures of where the magic happens, including the temps I'm getting, which are actually really cool for being only about an inch thick.

  6. So I was in the need for some more screen real-estate and I was debating on just getting a seconds 24in monitor for my Mac Pro. The only problem is I would have to buy 2 new monitors at the same time because I would want them to match an it would be about $1000 for both and I really didn't want to have 2 monitors, I really need higher res. on one monitor.

I was looking at this 3.5K display http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=224-8284 but for that amount of money I can almost get a new computer with that display.

So I ended up just selling my mac pro and I bought a 27in Core i7 iMac.

    Specs:

    2.8 Ghz Core i7

4 GB Ram (4GB more on order.)

    1 TB Hard Drive

    ATI 4850 512MB

    27in Display 2560 x 1440

I've only been using it for a few hours, but this thing is fucking fast and I can only imagine that it will get faster once I get the extra 4GB of ram I ordered. This thing is all SCREEN. I had to push it back on my desk because it is so damn big lol.... The 2560x1440 resolution makes a huge difference I can see so much more when working in photoshop, I can fit almost 3 full websites across the screen at one time. Photos are absolutely stunning on the IPS display, even better then the $1200 displays I have at work.

I will post some pictures later when I get everything else setup and clean up the mess I made around here.

  7. If it were myself , I'd have a look at the Cisco DPC3000 or along those lines.

That is not exactly the greatest cable modem. While it supports up to 160 Mbps DOCSIS 3, the WAN is only 10/100 Mbps. You want to get one that has a 10/100/1000 WAN. 100 Mbps + tiers are coming shortly from comcast and others already have them.

  8. Very nice, I just moved to Awatukee myself and have been using Qwest Fiberoptic 40/20. You're like right down the street from me. Internet is plentiful here for sure. You definitely got me beat on the download. But I spoke with a Qwest fiber tech the other day who told me that in August they will be offering 100/60 for the same price I'm paying. That's friggen insane.

Since its not really fiber, but rather FTTN, 100/60 is going to be hard for them to push reliably over any great distance with VDSL2. Your gonna have to be insanely close to the VRAD after 1500 feet or so VDSL2 wont be able to push anything faster then 100 Mbps. Maybe if AT&T or someone finally gets line bonding working in the field then this might be possible.

  9. You wouldn't get it replaced for one pixel any ways. Most warranties specify the number they'll respond to and it's usually 6-8 dead pixels.

They say that, but if you know how to talk to them you can get them to replace it for just one pixel. One pixel is enough to destroy the display.

  10. What causes these friggin' things?! It seems like ANY laptop I buy I can not get a break. My last Compaq (burnt pixels), my last Toshiba (burnt pixel), Yawwnnnzzz yepp my new Toshiba a505 burnt pixel in the top left. All I see is a tiny small dot. I tried JScreen or whatever it is pixel remover and nothing. Is this just my luck or am I doing something to cause these or what? I can't take it back because I am passed my 30 days, but ugh what the is going on?

Dead pixels usually happen at the manufacture. It's just something that happens, but is pretty rare now. It use to happen a lot. Heat is one thing that will cause it. Those pixel things that just put a bunch of noise on the screen will never fix a dead pixel, and will hardly ever fix a stuck pixel.

It's most likely nothing your doing, unless there is some kind of heat source around the display. You just have to check right away. The first thing I do when ever I get any kind of new computer is go over the screen, look for dead pixels, and do color correction, if its not up to my standard it goes back to the store. But it has to be done right away, with in about an hour.

  11. just to add one more thing. i do know that ram types such as 2700 ddr2 works great with 2100 ddr2, without really having a slowdown. or at least that ive noticed.

Thats because the difference between 266 DDR and 333 DDR is minimal. But going from 800 MHz to 533 MHz DDR2 its a quite a bit bigger difference and its not just the MHz rating that factored into it.

  12. Its either going to work or its not. But it wont Blow anything up.

The only reason it may not work is because its 4200 DDR2. I've seen a lot of computers not work with slower DDR2. The Cut off was 5300, with 800 MHz ram. But it can't hurt to try.

Just to add. You probably will notice a performance difference with memory intensive apps.

  13. Every time i go in there im talking to myself... lol & cant get a word in edgewise!

Maybe you should just listen more often. You know, open up be the sensitive type. then maybe you might have a better experience when talking to your self. lol...

  14. Hello all,

Was wondering if anyone could tell me whats the biggest hardrive I can put in an old dell optiplex 260? has a 40gb in it, but my 11 year old uses it for city of heros, and wow, and apparently wow has come out with a patch, and now he cant play, so i went out and bought a 500 gb hardrive for it, but was wondering before I started fooling around with it to much if it would work or not?

Would appreciate any info you could give!

    Thanks,

    Ironbeard

When I was in school all we had for the most part was dell optiplex 240's and 260's. As long as the drive you bought is IDE it should work with no problem. A SATA drive will not.

  15. Finally getting around to posting this.

Really damn good for a mobile device on a so so G router. I've got a N router on my list of things to get when I have a little extra money. Then I should get real close to my 24 Mbps max.

Here is a upload test as well.

  16. I'm supposing it's Fiber?

I'm waiting for VDSL2, hopefully in a couple of years. I could use some more upload speed from the current 800Kbps. Download is fine at 5200Kbps.

Well they market it as fiber even tho its not. They use VDSL2 for that plan.

  17. Looks awesome, but is it a phone as well?

    Yes/No....

Using something thats 11 inches corner to corner won't make a very good phone, and probably wouldn't make you look very good holding that up to your face for a phone call.

But since it does have a Mic, headphone jack, and bluetooth you could use skype on it for phone calls.

  18. Just got upgraded today, went from 12 Mbps download and 1.5 Mbps upload to 24 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload. I don't really care much or the extra download, its nice to have but doesn't really help me all that much. I was more intersted in having the extra upload speed.

  19. Fair enough, but i wont switch providers because Apple makes a deal with one of them instead of several, thats the only reason I haven't got an iPhone, and thats why I dont pay to close of attention to there mobile devices. Not worth my time . And yea, I still use Apple computers and always will.

You don't have to switch providers for the iPad, you don't even have to sign a contact or even talk to AT&T. It doesn't even have to be through AT&T since a 3G iPad comes unlocked. They just setup a special deal with AT&T for 3G data.

When you get a 3G iPad you just open a app on it, select the plan type you want and enter your payment info then the 3G connection is active. You can start it when ever you want and cancel it when ever you want.

    It's nothing like a phone.

  20. I'm going to let them get in a generation or two then by all means I will have one of these . Once they integrate the 3G network into it ( unless they have between the time I saw it and now ) it will be even more appealing. One thing that drives me mad is traveling then having to stop to find a connection. (I'm speaking of my current macbook pro ) yes, I know, go get a card ok. lol

Umm, you can get one with a 3G connection. Its $129 more for one with the 3G card built in, then its $15 per month for 250 MB of data or $30 per month with unlimited data, no contact, cancel anytime.
