  1. Hey: Your cool with the distance to your neighbors. the wireless phones might be an issue depending on the frequency you run. I'd recomend the D-link DGL-4300 (Money no object) or the DI624S and the approprate card. I've got the dgl-4300 and was using a Di-624 before that. I WOULD not get the MIMO stuff yet. Thats for the new "n" format and the final specifications are not set for that to come to market, so you could end up with something out of spec. I do some beta testing for D-link as i have a rather extensive home network. I like the D-link becuase if you have the super G stuff you can run at 108mps, you will never see that speed but the cool thing is it uses multipule channels so you get far fewer drops when the microwave kicks on, or the phone if thats an issue. Anyway, let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll give it a shot. Lance
  2. Hey: Modem to router/hub right just make sure that you have a wireless card that is the same as your router. A/B or G or some combo of all of those. If you don't already have a router you should consider a couple of things. 1) Your pocketbook, speed costs a little more. 2) A/B or G. B is the most common still at 11mps, but that slows down a lot even at a few feet. G is 54 Mps but with the same story. Go G if you can. 3) Do you already have wireless phones? This can KILL your network. Also do you know if your neighors have networks?this can also honk up the works. Wireless phones are on .900/2.4/5.8 ghtz. Wireless networks use 2.4 & 5.8, you see the problem... I've used both Linksys and D-link. If you tell me a little more about your needs I can tell you my thoughts. Anyway let us know. Lance
  3. hey: Safe mode has to do with the way that you start windows.
  4. Hey: www.webroot.com Thats where you will find spysweeper. I think it's risk free money back or free trial, something like that. No need to run in safe mode with this. Spy programs almost never show up in add/remove programs, thats the whole point. Personally I run three programs to keep myself clean and running fast. A spy sweeper, and window washer and a popup blocker. I've seen them mess up systems pretty good, but if your still surfing we should be able to kill it without a rebuild. GL and let us know how it comes out. Lance
  5. Hey: Webroots spyware is what i use, it lists both of those so i suspect it would solve your problem. Just fyi, I've used ad-aware and it works good, but some of the stuff it can do is not in the free rev. Both webrrot and adaware are well rated, but I like wr a little better after using both. Lance
  6. I was VP of Operations for Textron. I left that a year ago and decided to get a Masters Degree. (Not sure it made me any smarter, I'm a slow learner!!) LOL I'm finished in April and I'm now looking for companies to buy here in AZ.
  7. Sam: I upgraded to this modem about 6 months ago.
  8. hey: Got it working, interesting way about making it work. This is the link if your wondering. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/EN-US/ Did the fsc /scannow Thanks S1
  9. Hey: One more thing. When I use windows add/remove components it really doesn't seem like it's getting IE out. removes desktop access but I think it's still installed. Any way to wipe it out so I can truely start over with ie? Lance
  10. Hey: ignore the link comment you didn't send one for IE itself, but I got it off the ms website so should have been good
  11. Hey S1: Still no love..... 1) Used your reg download and no change. 2) Tried to download IE from MS and install, said it already saw newer version on system and halted install. 3) Going to try the download link you sent, but I think it's sp1 vs. sp2 so not sure were to find IE sp2 only. Keep the ideas coming. Also even getting in this way isn't totally stable. Lance
  12. Hey: What a problem.... OK I can't get IE to launch. When I use the standard icons it doesn't launch. I found a way into it by asking msm for a windows update and then using that window for IE. What I have done. 1) Run AVG professional (Nothing found.) 2) Run Webroots Spysweeper (Nothing unusual found) 3) Run Webroots window washer. (Nothing unusual and shouldn't really matter.) 4) Reset IE defaults (No luck) 5) Cold Reboot (No Luck) 6) Unstalled IE, cold boot, reinstalled IE (No luck) Also, when I shut down system it shows each instance of my trying to launch IE as a non responsive program. They DO NOT however show up in the task manager. OK, you all are much brighter than me, whats next? Lance
  13. Downloading 10 updates right now. Just a quick note to all, although I think Microsoft has had some slip ups, it's important to understand it simply can't deliver a "perfect" product before it passes it on to it's customers. Hot only is it statistically impossible from a human factors point of view, it's inconsistent with the successful business models employed by the MAJORITY of companies in the Information Technology sector. Microsoft spent 7.2Billion dollars on pure R&D and several Billion more on it's core products. even with that spend, it can't map all the possible variables. I for one am and just glad even with all the flaws that we have the kind of power we all do one our desktops brought to use by the companies people like to bash. (Swimmer, I was not being critical of your comments, but the ones where people come unhinged and go postal.) Lantom

Hey: I'm sick of having to install may game master disks to run them. Whats the best programs for overcoming this? Thanks for the thoughts. Lantom
  15. Hey: The DI-524 is a pretty good unit, I'm surprised it's slowed up. I have a DI-624, the so called super G. I run at 5-6 Mps on my wireless no problem at 100Ft. A few points to note. 1) G speeds work only when G only broadcasts are sent, so if your using B cards anywhere or your laptop is internal B rather than G then know that your total speed possible is 11Mps not 54 Mps even if some cards on the net are G. (Your router firmware can force only G if you want.) 2) Distance does matter with antenna's it matters a lot!!! If your only starting with 11Mps you might be capping at the 1.2 because of signal loss. I know you said 1 foot, if you were above or before the unit by a couple of feet that really matters. I have Hawking omnidirectional high gains on my wiresless, it really helps. (about 25 bucks at new egg.) Try testing with the laptop and the router at the same level with antennas close and parallel if possible, then move away in increments to confirm if it signal loss over distance. PC mag article shows MOST units loss 50% of throughput at 1 FOOT and those are under controlled test conditions!!!! SO if your 11Mps at 50% you get the idea. It gets ugly fast best case!! http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1574323,00.asp (Sorry, I can't find the article that really explains the signal issues, I've lost it!!, I'll keep looking and if I find it all send.) 3) In your router check under the performance settings and insure it's set to Auto rather than some lower default. 4) Move the Antenna away from your desktop. 5) Also I haven't had issues, but folks do complain that microwaves, cell phones, house phones KILL wireless networks. Make sure your not testing with any more "noise" than you have to. Lantom Let me know what you find, I'm doing some looking on the DI-524 so I may post again.
  16. Cholla: Yes you really are old like me!!!! LOL I had a new intelivision, wore two of them out... Loved it... Two games I'll never forget was the sea battle one were you had a fleet and 6-8 different kinds of ships. You had to protect your base and get theres... Also one that I can't remember the name of but it was like asteroids and you could set screen to bounce you or let you pass threw to the other side... Also do you remember B-17 bomber? With the voice module that attached to the Intelevision.. Those were the days... LOL
  17. All: I use Voip Now... It works quite well. I think the only problem with Googles approach is that they want to use the computer as a part of the interface. Bad idea, WE geeks on a site like this might use it that way but most won't. My wife didn't want Viop until I told her she was already using it. I set it up so that the 2 lines are connected to the base station and we have wireless phones around the house. Works great....
  18. .s1 is right, your wireless network could be the slow point. If you can you should hook your system up directly, get your tweaks done and find out what your best tested speeds are. After that start working with your wireless side to see how much it slows down. Are you wireless b or g? What router or access point do you have? Wireless networks rated speed is NEVER close to the actual speed and it can get reall slow over distances. If your running B and your covering any distance or have lots of interference you might be lucky to get 1-2Mps from it. If you let us know what router you have I might be able to find something on what you should expect. Lantom
  19. OK, what is a PGT??? Not sure what your talking about
