Marcin541 Posted December 18, 2004 Author CID Share Posted December 18, 2004 I havent called my isp regarding those stats, because I know that they will tell me its all my fault. Im not sure I understand what people on dslr say lol.
MICROWAVE Posted December 18, 2004 CID Share Posted December 18, 2004 very unlikely that your phone wiring and devices impact speed only at those hours VanBuren Yes I agree that it is unlikely that the wire for you phone in your house could cause a problem at a certain time, only if you have some other device hooked up that is also using it.....Something that is much more likely is that the central office that your connection comes from could be having a high volume at that time and causes you problems or that your C.O. or another somewhere is having a problem or doing a major reset or any number of other things, next you would need to know if you are coming from an old step office or T-bar or ESS or any other flavor it could shed some lite on your specific problem. Now the bad news is that the Bell company whomever that is for you is under no obligation to do anything especially if you pay for a voice quality line and it falls under the specs of what is acceptable to them and the FEDS. I have seen where fax machines have not worked properly due to line conditions and Ma Bell at least in Arizona didn't have to fix it even after the problem was proved to the A.C.C (Government) that it was a line issue. I know this doesn't help you much but it is the way they play the game!!!!! Microwave
Marcin541 Posted December 18, 2004 Author CID Share Posted December 18, 2004 I do fall under the 13K feet limit. I think as you have said, its my CO. Also, my ISP is my telco aswell. They should be able to do something about it.
Marcin541 Posted December 18, 2004 Author CID Share Posted December 18, 2004 Hmm its 11K, but Im at 10,100. One more question, If it does come down to the worst, and the tech (supposed to call Tuesday) says that I cannot receive the full 3/768, what should I do then? I know they cannot downgrade me to 1.5/384 without my permission because I did sign a year contract for the 3/768 plan. But should I keep my current 3/768 even if its slow during "peak" hours? Or should i cancel my contract and go back down to 1.5/384. I mean I can love with 3/768 throughout most of the day and slower after 6. But is it really worth it? The only thing holding me back from downgrading is the upload. Maybe if it comes to the worst, i can convince Verizon to make a custom 1.5/768 plan just for me? So for now, if i cannot fix my problem, should I keep 3/768 or downgrade (and return modem) to 1.5/384. P.S - If i do downgrade, ill probabily have to sign another year commitment contract to receive a "free" modem. Thanks Guys, Especially Van and Micowave. VanBuren Posted December 18, 2004 CID Share Posted December 18, 2004 i cant belive it, you should be able to get 3 Mbps at 13 000 feet here in Sweden we have adsl up to 8 Mbps and limit it to 3 KM from CO, notice its "up to" but i seen guys reach 6 Mbps at that distance. 3 KM = 3000/0,3048 = 9843 feet you have a contract, sue em if they dont fix it... Marcin541 Posted December 18, 2004 Author CID Share Posted December 18, 2004 With Verizon, if I sue them, they will tell me its the light pole next to my house slowing me down lol The only thing that ticks me off is that P2P Programs run At 350Kb/s (my cap) and if i do a test, thats when it sucks. I think its only web browsing thats slow. I turned off everything i could and tried both of my computers. Its not a firewall, nor virus. They also cant be slowing me down because I overused the internet. DSL is unlimited, so they cant in the first place. And even if it wasnt, i only downloaded 2.8gigs and uploaded 2 this month. I really dont know what to do. I guess i should wait and time will tell...
Marcin541 Posted December 22, 2004 Author CID Share Posted December 22, 2004 Im finished calling them (phone ran out of batteries lol) and the guy said my lines were "excellent" even though not that long ago, that was the only reason why I wasnt getting my speeds. So in conclusion, Verzion either lied to me or made a mistake. Anyway, the guy told me he did a test on my line and that the line was excellent once again. He did see something wrong with the modem (static or something) so he asked how far my modem was from any devices. I told him it was one foot away from my monitor, he told me the minimum was 4. So then he asked if I had filesharing software. I had to say yes because i was stupid to tell them before, and he had it written down. So he told me its the problem, and i told him its not running at the moment. He said "Its always running". I didnt believe him because my network lights were not in use, and all modem lights were stable (not blinking). I told him that alot of other people are having the same problem in my area. He said, im only one person and that they are only allowed to take care of one person at a time. So i said okay, because i knew he was right. So then he went and asked me how much system resources i had free. I asked how to check it, and he said go to task manager and check the ram (he should have just said ram, not system resources). I had 320ram used and 320 free. He said that was 50% used and 50% free. He also said that the minimum for verizon to run good is 70% free. How much ram to they expect me to get? He said its not a matter of ram, its a matter of spyware. So i told him (Like an above post mentioned) that I reformatted my HD last week and that I ran a Virus and Spyware check 2 days ago. And i told him it did find something. But then i said it was only cookies lol. I told him that when I start up windows, around 50% ram is used, as my windows is set to use up as much as it wants to so that i can access programs faster. He said, theres my problem. He also said that i shouldnt try to "tweak" windows because ill end up breaking it in the end (My windows isnt broken... just loads programs faster). Oh i forgot to mention that he said since i was 10,100 feet away from the CO and that usually thats just an estimate and i should always add an extra 2000 feet, i didnt qualify for 3/768. Yet, i am getting the speeds throughout most of the day. Then i told him that it might be a problem in the CO or something. I added that one person said that the network might be overloaded (when i called in 2 days ago) and he said that they guarantee upto 3mbps, and that if everyone comes home from work and uses the internet, i should expect this. He said that Cable is shared and thats why its slow (he said that before he said that the dsl is gonna be slow too if alot of people are onlnie). So then i went on and said that "DSL is a dedica..." he cut me off and said that i DO NOT have a T1 or T3 running into my house (he said through my phoneline, but neither t1 nor t3 run through phonelines, i dont think so anyway). He said again, that im guaranteed upto 3mbps. Then he was talking about all the things bad about me, such as filesharing software, the modem being too close to my monitor, too little ram, and my phone made a noise (the one it usually does before it turns off) and i said "Once sec, my phone is.." and it turned me off. But this guy, i have to give credit to. He was one of, if not the most smartest person i have ever talked to from Verizon. I will wait and see what happens, i wont downgrade my speed. ^my phonecall to verizon
xs1 Posted December 22, 2004 CID Share Posted December 22, 2004 thats great. " you need 70% free ram to run at good speeds!" lmfao... And i dont see why people always rag on cabe being shared.. Iv never had a drop at anytime in the day at any amount of users on my area being on :s
Marcin541 Posted December 22, 2004 Author CID Share Posted December 22, 2004 Depends on where you live too... In new york you can expect many more people to be on roadrunner than in FL. That might be a reason why you get high speeds. But it shouldnt happen with dsl, if my bandwidth is shared, then why not get cable? Its capped higher and faster. DJVageli Posted December 24, 2004 CID Share Posted December 24, 2004 LMAO lol But yea I know what u mean, that was one of the crappiest excuses Ive heard from a ISP in a long time
Marcin541 Posted December 24, 2004 Author CID Share Posted December 24, 2004 Hey, I've heard worse. They said my modem was too close to my monitor. And I had too little ram because i need 80% free at all times for dsl to run smoothly, yet their minimum is 128Mb, now imagine using 102.4MB or less at all times to run DSL. Now me, i have 640MB of ram, and when i start "windblows" I use around 300 and I cant really minimize that lol. Such b.s. that im not calling them again to do troubleshooting. They better be installing them radiators tonight since they are scheduled for maintnence at 3AM.
