disturbed Posted March 9, 2006 CID Share Posted March 9, 2006 ....it went flawlesly, without a hitch - I am 'wired' right now, and there is no loss of speed - so no bad impact on my box.....I will try wireless in a day or two

Swimmer Posted March 9, 2006 CID Share Posted March 9, 2006 Is this a move to dd-wrt? I think you will be supprised at how much more stable this firmware is and how much better the speeds are!
disturbed Posted March 9, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 9, 2006 this is default firmware - this router is v5 - i have read somewhere they do not have any new firmware for it....something like that.... do you have any more information on it ? Swimmer Posted March 9, 2006 CID Share Posted March 9, 2006 V5 is a completely different router.. not the same hardware so the firmware doesnt work on it.. kinda sucks but that how linksys decided to eleminate the third party firmwares
disturbed Posted March 9, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 9, 2006 well...so far so good .... i will see how it works out though - if i dont like it, ill just return it and try something else

disturbed Posted March 10, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 I don't know really - it was only 49 dollars - ill give it a try, ill keep it online for a day or so and see if it craps out on me - ....there might also be some firmware upgrades in the future - the v5 is fairly new
brock01 Posted March 10, 2006 CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 dd-wrt is tight, thanks to swimmer for telling me to get it, can do so many things, its free, and even with bittorent 24/7 it hasnt crashed like the normal wrt54g used to
disturbed Posted March 10, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 ....ah....i spent the last half hour reading reviews on the V5 wrt54g and everyone says they are trash....i really don't know what to do right now - whether to return it and get a V4 or keep it - are there some tests out there that I can run which will show me if this router will give me trouble or no ? ....aldsjfkla Q@#

disturbed Posted March 10, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 i bought mine at bestbuy yesterday - any idea on which stores, besides wal mart, might have V4 ?
Swimmer Posted March 10, 2006 CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 I would dump it.. and see if you can find one at some other store. It opens up other possibilities if something does go wrong.
ballista Posted March 10, 2006 CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 Woohoo I bought mine off of zipzoomfly.com and I got v.3 so HAHA! lol j/k. But since this particular router is in the lime-light at this time I was just wondering if there are any routers you guys know of that get better range on wireless G. My wifes laptop isn't getting the best in the world and it's only like 100 ft. from the router itself, through 3 rooms and a short hallway. Swimmer Posted March 10, 2006 CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 if you put the dd-wrt firmware you can increase the power output.. also try adjusting the antennas, an moving it away from any metal, radios, speakers, and computers.
disturbed Posted March 10, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 i took your advice - i returned it - im keeping the wireless adapter though - tomorrow i will go and search for a v4 or a v3
Swimmer Posted March 10, 2006 CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 I would check walmart, target, and some of the smaller office supply stores.. For some reason I thought that Circuitcity had that V3.1 on their shelves.
fikester Posted March 10, 2006 CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 Wow .... I must have got lucky with my v.5 or wireless card as 100ft radius gets excellent signal, outdoors can go 200ft radius with very good signal 300+ ft low/drops out spotty coverage. The above is with a internal pro wireless card, the second laptop using an external Motorola card does not get the same coverage, not even close. I was amazed at the difference prior to testing thought for sure the external card would have surpassed the internal card easily?
disturbed Posted March 10, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 well...i went to one walmart yesterday - they had only V5 routers - today ill scout some other walmarts, kmarts, and office depot stores.....i wish there was a way to check online LOL
disturbed Posted March 10, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 10, 2006 last time i was at frys electronics, they had older versions - a crap load of them - ...that was like a month ago ... lets hope they still have them
disturbed Posted March 11, 2006 Author CID Share Posted March 11, 2006 And yes - frys electronics is actually selling the V5 of the wrt54g - luckily, in the stack of like 200 modems i accidently found a version 3.1 modem grabbed it right away and bought it - ....might have been the only one they have hehehehe which firmware do you recommend for it ? Swimmer Posted March 11, 2006 CID Share Posted March 11, 2006 wrt54g v3.1 right.. ? Read this guide.. http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-12222 I like them because their firmware is free, updated frequently, and for the most part is easy to use and understand.
