RolandHaley Posted January 21, 2007 CID Share Posted January 21, 2007 Actually I thought I was in the wrong forum with all the satellite talk, but read a few more messages and found I was okay. I have no problems with my laptop speed as it gets scanned every Sunday for 'SpyWare' and daily for viruses etc. and I have cleared my temporary file before doing the speed tests. The other day my son came over with the grandkids and brought his laptop, we did the same tests and got the same results that I get s..l..o..w speeds. Like I have tried to explain to the tech people at Xplornet, they have problems with their equipment, not me with mine. Problem is, it seems to be falling on deaf ears. Trouble is, Xplornet is the only broadband provider in my rural area, so I am stuck with them. Mind you, it is far better than the early 80's when I had to use the dial phone to dial the number and then place the phone in the two rubber cups on the modem... but when you are paying for 5 Mbps, you expect to get something close. tommie gorman Posted January 21, 2007 CID Share Posted January 21, 2007 Yep, ISP's are and always have and always will be a pain. But at least you have what others do not. And a 5 advertised is not bad these days. SO for curiousity why not post a speed test?

tommie gorman Posted January 21, 2007 CID Share Posted January 21, 2007 Humor me kind sir. Read all of this and run through the whole thing one time and let me know if any of it changes at all. Also run your scan in safe mode for total cleaning. (Don't get me wrong here, but maybe you both have the same bad habits. Now if I am wrong fine.) Achieve the Best Performance Out of Your Computer http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-4257 So let me know how it turns out. 90% of problems start here. I hope it helps some. Also have you restarted your modem lately, remove the cable end from the modem and touch the end for 10+ seconds.
RolandHaley Posted January 22, 2007 CID Share Posted January 22, 2007 Okay! tommie gorman Posted January 22, 2007 CID Share Posted January 22, 2007 One more thing before we move on to plan Z. Try testing with the 2992 file test instead of the smart test. http://www.testmy.net/speedtest/d_load.php Just click on the "Largest - 2992 kB" in the box under smart test. And postback here. Okay! here it is, of course this is early morning so there are probably not too many people accessing this tower, but even so, a far cry from the 5 Mbps I am signed up for. I should point out also the way I noticed the slow speed. I have a Voip phone system that was working fine until just before Christmas when the bottom fell out of it. That is when I started doing the speed checks with and without the Voip phone hooked up and it didn't make any difference. :::.. tommie gorman Posted January 22, 2007 CID Share Posted January 22, 2007 Plan Z, scream talk convincingly to your ISP. I think it is on their end. And they need to do something about it. That is unacceptable. Just my opinion, of course. Just one more thing if I did not mention it before. Try the Edwido online scan, it is pretty good. And cannot be corrupted. http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/
tommie gorman Posted January 23, 2007 CID Share Posted January 23, 2007 Are you running a messenger service on it, like MSN or Yahoo? Try clicking on these keys Crtl+Alt+Delete and see what is running in the background.
RolandHaley Posted January 23, 2007 CID Share Posted January 23, 2007 Are you running a messenger service on it, like MSN or Yahoo? Try clicking on these keys Crtl+Alt+Delete and see what is running in the background. No I am not using any of those services. I checked what was running and there are 48 processes in the background but only the SYSTEM IDLE PROCESS using any CPU space. I tried the EDWIDO on-line scan, but seeing that I do not use Internet Explorer, it said I would have to download the version. It is now called AVG Anti-Spyware which I downloaded and ran taking 1 hour and ten minutes finding nothing out of the ordinary. As for screaming sorry, talking to the ISP, I have been conversing with them since January 2nd and still get the runaround. My next move is a strongly worded letter to the president of the company. tommie gorman Posted January 23, 2007 CID Share Posted January 23, 2007 Good move on the President. Sometimes that is what it takes. Goodluck.
RolandHaley Posted January 23, 2007 CID Share Posted January 23, 2007 Mailed off a letter to the CEO of the company this afternoon, explaining my frustration and apparent lack of support from the tech people. Lets see if I get a reply. My next move is to complain to the local company that is promoting Xplornet.
tommie gorman Posted January 23, 2007 CID Share Posted January 23, 2007 You know you are helping other folks at the same time. They are watching and waiting to see how it turns out. brokersdad Posted January 24, 2007 CID Share Posted January 24, 2007 Yes, we are waiting , my service sucks the past 2 days..I went back to using dial up most times cause it's faster! Keep us informed please.
pepsialex Posted January 24, 2007 CID Share Posted January 24, 2007 Yes, we're waiting here too! I've been fighting with them since the 9th of this month. I'm in south sask, had my system installed on the 9th, and it's been an absolute nightmare. Good one day, crap for the next three. I've been waiting since last monday for a level 2 tech to get back to me, hah! a level 2 support told me without a doubt I would DEFINATELY hear from a level 2 tech today!! Well, day is over, no call. I can say without a doubt I've never had such awful customer service in my life. I am on the phone with them constantly. Running test day in and day out, switching from wireless to straight hookup to the modem, running tests in safe mode, always the same results, yet no one on their end will admit that is where the trouble is. I do know of 3 others in this area who are going through the exact same speed issues, and who are calling in too, (not as much as me I run my business online, I need internet, I am on more than maybe the average joe) I'm not getting fap'd, that isn't the problem. I will be going back to dreaded dial up, I am without a doubt using the 30 day money back guarantee, but till then, I plan on continuing to call them daily. This is crap. RolandHaley Posted January 24, 2007 CID Share Posted January 24, 2007 Maybe, just maybe, if more of us send letters to the CEO complaining of the service, or lack thereof, we may get somewhere. For your info, here is his name and address. John Maduri - CEO Barrett Xplore Inc. 300 Lockhart Mill Road, Woodstock NB E7M 5C3
Jaybird2203 Posted January 24, 2007 CID Share Posted January 24, 2007 Here's something I stumbled upon in the last few days, I was able to get a service guy to log into my wireless antenna and I seen a setting called" max sustained downlink" and for the last 4 weeks or so my internet was always around 85-90kBs/s steady, about that setting when I looked at the value of it, it was set at 900kbs coincidence? I'm not sure about that, just thought I would share that with you guys. also there was one for uplink and that was set at 600kbs which is what my upload was capped at. terrh Posted January 24, 2007 CID Share Posted January 24, 2007 Hey! Just found this forum.... always had 56k before this month. I signed up with Xplornet on Saturday (5 days ago)... Last night we FINALLY got it working faster than a few Kb/s... I had been speaking to their tech support for several hours every day, one of them suggested setting my NIC to 10baseT full duplex and for whatever reason that sped it up a TON.... it's still nowhere near adevertised but at least the internet is usable now. Another thing they told me to check is older (2.4 ghz) wireless phones - they can interfere with the service... new 5.8 phones and cellphones don't. I'm getting (very consistantly) 431Kb down and 308Kb up.... a far cry from the "Xtreme" claims of 5000Kb/ down and ??? (I forget up) Anyways, I haven't had much trouble with their tech guys, aside from being not too smart most of the time.... and LONG hold times. RolandHaley Posted January 24, 2007 CID Share Posted January 24, 2007 Today I took the 20 minute drive to the distributor for Xplornet and spoke with the owner. He was very sympathetic to my cause, but outlined that he had no control over them. I pointed out that he, being a distributor, should have a little more clout than I do being a lowly customer. He also said that Xplornet have been waiting for 3 months for Ma Bell to get the fibre optic lines to the tower, and all they have done so far is install temporary DSL lines, and that they are aware of the slow speed problems. They did get a multitude of new customers just before Christmas, and those fibre optic lines were supposed to have been installed. A representative from Xplornet is to arrive at their shop this afternoon and he is going to bring to their attention that there are some unhappy customers. He is also going to call the level 3 tech support at their 'special phone number'' and find out why no one has got back to me. I am waiting with bated breath. Looking back through my records, I find out that I am still waiting for a tech 3 support person to call me from 2005, although that particular problem did get resolved. terrh Posted January 24, 2007 CID Share Posted January 24, 2007 I just got a call back from a level 3 tech... we did some more stuff. Improved my connection speeds slightly (but not very fast) about 500kb down and 380 up now. He says the antenna is pulling nearly 6mb so the problem is either in the output of my antenna or the cable they wired down here. Anyways, he's sending a tech out to figure it out, I know the local installers are busy so I'm going to have to live with this for now... but 500kb down isn't all THAT slow... alot faster than the 56kb down I had on dialup
