Mystik_MDS Posted April 14, 2006 CID Share Posted April 14, 2006 Ok so I've noticed my internet starting to go ALOT slower than it used to.... Let me first start off by saying that I'm a gold teir member which entitles me to 8mbps down and 768kbps up. However whenever I run the download speed test i'm only seeing a max of 1.6mbps, so I proceeded to contact comcast techs to find out what the problem could be. They said that there were no reported outtages in my area, they then proceeded to check my modem and said everything was fine and suggested that I power cycled the modem... So I power cycled the modem and nothing became of my speed going back to normal, its still going extremely slow... I've run out of ideas and comcast techs are of no help telling me that the router I purchased automatically updates itself even after I told them that I manually have to download and install the new firmware. Any ideas guys? This is ridiculous, I'm paying extra per month to recieve faster speeds yet am getting slower speeds than their regular advertised speeds... Thanks in advance. P.S. If you need any tests modem settings etc just let me know.
Guest helloimtim Posted April 14, 2006 CID Share Posted April 14, 2006 There can be so many diffrent reasons for the huge slow down. Could be virus and or spyware. Scan for thoes in safe mode.I personally can not see spyware and or a virus takeing that much bandwidth. I would download a free netmeter. Just surf for the word "free netmeter" See what is comming out of your computer and in. If you have TONS of outgoing you have a major virus and or spyware. If that does not do the trick and you dont have tons going out of your computer. I would reset your default tcp/ip settings. Download this handy free tool. At the top you will see the word file. Click on reset to windows default and reboot. https://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php.That should get you a great start and tracking down the issue........:Let us know what you found out..... l
tommie gorman Posted April 14, 2006 CID Share Posted April 14, 2006 Welcome to the forum Mystik_MDS. When is the last time you defragged and did disk cleanup? Have you used a registry cleaner? Also woud post a speed test? Maybe the 2992 file?
Mystik_MDS Posted April 14, 2006 Author CID Share Posted April 14, 2006 Well for starters my computer defrags every night so thats not the prob... secondly I run a few anti spyware programs nightly as well... xoftspy, ad-aware, microsoft anti-spyware, and spybot. All come up without any problems and I'm also running norton every night aswell, with up to date definitions... I'll check the net meter in a sec but heres my 2992 speed :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 1393 Kbps about 1.39 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB) Download Speed is:: 170 kB/s Tested From:: https://testmy.net (Server 1) Test Time:: 2006/04/14 - 4:03pm Bottom Line:: 24X faster than 56K 1MB Download in 6.02 sec Tested from a 2992 kB file and took 17.594 seconds to complete Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7 Diagnosis: May need help : running at only 28.15 % of your hosts average (Comcast.net) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/stats/id-6PYCZG047 Edit: I've also checked my upload speeds and those are where they are supposed to be... tommie gorman Posted April 14, 2006 CID Share Posted April 14, 2006 Have you tried a cablenut file optimizer? http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-1013 If not and you use it, let it set in about 3 days to get full effects.
Mystik_MDS Posted April 15, 2006 Author CID Share Posted April 15, 2006 Yeah I optimized it a long time ago and havent touched it since.
tommie gorman Posted April 15, 2006 CID Share Posted April 15, 2006 Some get over advertised speeds, some don't. But I would say that you should be able to go alot faster. You say optimized, I assume that you meant TCP Optimizer. Maybe if you dumped that and got a cablenut instead(with cable anyway) you might see better speeds. If you meant cablenut you might PM Van, remember he is busy. He could get you a better setting. Just a thought.

Swimmer Posted April 23, 2006 CID Share Posted April 23, 2006 Wow.. sounds like you are getting the run around from comcast.. Here is what I would try.. Connect a computer directly to the modem. Run the speed test.. If you are seeing better speed then I would reset the router, using the little black button to factory settings, and then hook it back up. Also if you just recently upgraded the firmware and now it is all messed up.. try a power cycle on the router.. if that doesnt work.. then I would reflash the router with the last stable version that you were seeing you speeds at. You should be at least in the 7500 range with the package if not above 8000.. As far as hop #9 timing out.. that is a little odd.. the router is not part of Comcast network at all it is good old ATT. So.. they are not going to be able to fix it. Mystik_MDS Posted April 24, 2006 Author CID Share Posted April 24, 2006 Had a tech out to my house yesterday and noticed one thing that was wrong with my connection... I had recently unplugged a tv and left the cable hanging out of the back of the VCR and he said that it was backfeeding through the rest of the house so that sped me up a little bit and then he said he was gonna turn something over to maintenance. So we will see...
