bookabooka Posted September 11, 2006 CID Share Posted September 11, 2006 Damn. Oh well i will have to give myself stacks of RAM then instead... Hopefully that'll sort the issue out. Do you have any decent tips for speeding up the computers performance??
dlewis23 Posted September 11, 2006 CID Share Posted September 11, 2006 Do you have any decent tips for speeding up the computers performance?? don't have very many things running in the background. the lower the # of processes the faster your computer will be. bookabooka Posted September 11, 2006 CID Share Posted September 11, 2006 Okey dokey, I may sound a little dumb at times but I've never really had the opportunity to work on computers, but in regard to the processes how do you know which ones to stop?? I have 33 processes running and 7 of them are SVCHOST.EXE whatever the hell that is???
Roco Posted September 11, 2006 CID Share Posted September 11, 2006 Hi bookabooka from the UK a special wellcome to the forum , as we are a bit out numbered at the moment , laptop upgrading is not worth the effort and cost IMHO are you running Xp home ? don't think of overclocking as battery life and temperature will be a big problem, you seem very short of ram memory( 33.4MB free ) 512Mb is nice for Xp , have a look on http://www.crucial.com/uk/?gclid=CPO0qfDkpYcCFT0MQgodvljk7w free del . normally next day if you order AM, SVCHOST.EXE is a essential part of windows , so don't try and remove it . I have 5 running , what antivirus and firewall are you running, as Norton and zone alarm will bring most laptops to a near stand still for a laptop I would suggest ,AVG free and Sygate 5.5 Regards Roco UK
tommie gorman Posted September 11, 2006 CID Share Posted September 11, 2006 bookabooka if you want some little speed tweaks just for the computer read here. http://www.testmy.net/forum/t-11849 And on running processes I only have my AVG free and Microsoft anti-spyware running in my background. Besides essential window items. Have you checked in start*run*msconfig*enter*start up tab. The others only slow me down, and they will start on prompt. Just some some hints. mogramjo Posted January 2, 2007 CID Share Posted January 2, 2007 Good afternoon TMT'ers...temporarily using my Cox connection...I've 'forced' the dynamic IP to set a different gateway/IP and we'll see. TI couldn't resist posting the download speed I just got at dlewis23-2's mirror just now..I don't want to change my 'signature' so I'll just paste it...I 'm not cruisin' for a bruisin' nor wanting to get into discussions about *why* I can only use 1MB at that site..as it's SO close..it reads my speed at an unreal rate if I try more than 1MB and won't run...I get a 'special message' instead 1:27 PM 1/2/2007 :::.. tommie gorman Posted January 30, 2007 CID Share Posted January 30, 2007 What are your advertised speeds lost329? Try using larger files tests, instead of the smart test. It will be more accurate and better looking. Use the 1013 for your download test and 579 for your upload test. Those speeds should improve some. What are your advertised speeds?
