joeybelle Posted January 25, 2005 CID Share Posted January 25, 2005 Hey guys, First post, so take it easy on me. Came across this site today, pretty cool from what I can see. Here's my results from my download test: :::.. Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 9966 Kbps about 10 Mbps (tested with 12160 KB) Download Speed is:: 1217 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 178 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 0.84 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=5YR49C318 This seems pretty good, yes? I'm on earthlink/Road Runner. My question is this: I'm a daytrader and use a number of computers (currently 4 hooked up). My girlfriend has a laptop and is requesting I switch to WIFI. Will that slow my speed? I came across this site when I did a google on high speed WIFI. I currently have a Belkin router, and see they make WIFI routers has well. Any feedback is appreciated! CA3LE Posted January 26, 2005 CID Share Posted January 26, 2005 Well, I have seen speed degradation on wireless as opposed to wired LAN in every case I have tested. 802.11b is 11 Mbps and is definitely going to slow your connection down. When I used this my 4000 Kbps connection (at the time) slowed to about 2000-3000 Kbps when I was not too far from the router. The farther away you are the worse the problem. 802.11g is 54 Mbps and will increase your range quite a bit. You should see allot less degradation of speed because of the higher bandwidth and the increased range. You will also have much better range through walls and obstacles. Now on to the newest shit out there. Pre-N - Now, Pre-N has not come out yet but Pre-N stuff has. Belkin offers a Pre-N router for about 159.99 and a laptop card for 109.99 see this at Belkins Site (direct link to router). Below are some of the listed advantages... stuff in green are advantages over old technology.

Download Stats ..::: Connection is:: 4065 Kbps about 4.1 Mbps (tested with 1496 KB) Download Speed is:: 496 KB/s Tested From:: http://www.testmy.net/ Bottom Line:: 73 times faster than 56K you can download 1MB in 2.06 second(s) Validation Link:: https://testmy.net/cgi-bin/get.cgi?Test_ID=DLB09J4K8 Heres my speed and I have a 4M Down cap. RTB Posted January 26, 2005 CID Share Posted January 26, 2005 You know Shug, that's basically my true speed. My ping and the occasional loss of connection kill any chance of me ever reaching 4 Mbps speed to here. Upload is still yummy, set exactly at my cap. Just that ping robs me of 60 Kbps on the test results.
Shug7272 Posted January 26, 2005 CID Share Posted January 26, 2005 Yea my UL sucks most of the time, so I guess it all evens out. BTW Troll I like your new animation under the name, very nice. If I was high I could watch it all day.
