biker9075 Posted August 9, 2007 CID Share Posted August 9, 2007 Quick questions about power supplies...My current power supply is still the stock supply that came with the compaq which is only 250 watt. I am looking for a new video card and most of the ones I see need a minimum 350 watt supply. So my question is, are power supplies pretty interchangeable? Cause I don't want to buy something and have it not fit. Heres what I am looking at: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16817153023
biker9075 Posted August 9, 2007 Author CID Share Posted August 9, 2007 I was also looking at this for something a little cheaper http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182006
coknuck Posted August 9, 2007 CID Share Posted August 9, 2007 I'm not sure if Compaq's are proprietorial or not on the power supply.
granpa Posted August 9, 2007 CID Share Posted August 9, 2007 Well for a fact I know my power supply is proprietorial, but for the Compaq all yo need to do is check a site that sells them and it should give you the information needed for upgrading or check at Compaq. biker9075 Posted August 10, 2007 Author CID Share Posted August 10, 2007 I just talked to compaq, and they say not to use more then 350W, and it does not void the warrenty.
amc11890 Posted August 10, 2007 CID Share Posted August 10, 2007 you will be fine, i own a 5 year old computer and just last year i replaced the original 200watt ps with a 500 watt. As to setting it up ait couldnt be any easier. Any standard psu would work.
RTB Posted August 10, 2007 CID Share Posted August 10, 2007 I just talked to compaq, and they say not to use more then 350W, and it does not void the warrenty. That doesn't make sense. Did they mean it's unnecessary to have more than a 350 watt power supply in that particular pc?

biker9075 Posted August 10, 2007 Author CID Share Posted August 10, 2007 Okay well, I am getting the GeForce 8600GT, do you think that a 350 will be enouph?
RTB Posted August 10, 2007 CID Share Posted August 10, 2007 They said anymore then 350 can damage the hardware In other words, they have no idea what they're talking about. Your current system will take like 150 at most currently, so theoretically you'd be fine even with the 250 watt, if it was a quality PSU. With the 8600GT you'd be at 200 or so. 350 watt will be plenty.

mudmanc4 Posted August 10, 2007 CID Share Posted August 10, 2007 They said anymore then 350 can damage the hardware Why would they say such a thing? It does not work like that! The components decide how much power to draw from the power supply
