TheArtworkGuy Posted May 31, 2008 CID Share Posted May 31, 2008 once again i am in need of guidance. i think i've been infected with a virus, because my computer has been randomly freezing up on me. i've run AVAST! AD-AWARE SPYBOT multiple times and one of them deleted a trojan, but the problem still persists. i opened up my list of processes and started googling them one by one, and noticed that i had three instances of svchost.exe running...i thought this was kind of suspicious, so i shut down a few of them. apparently it's a critical system process and it gave me a 30 second countdown and restarted my computer, lol. i'm running windows xp professional. anyone have any ideas? mudmanc4 Posted May 31, 2008 CID Share Posted May 31, 2008 You contracted something man, just do your deep scans in safe mode, or did you try this already ?
TheArtworkGuy Posted May 31, 2008 Author CID Share Posted May 31, 2008 i'll give that a shot, thanks.
Sequoia Posted May 31, 2008 CID Share Posted May 31, 2008 Many times a virus hides in your system restore points.Disabling that temporarily then running the scan usually gets rid of the virus. The bad side of this is you lose the previous restore points. So another form of backup is good to have before you do this.Of course a currant backup would have the virus but would get you back to where you are now if need be. If all went well then you could just erase the backup with the virus.
Dark06 Posted May 31, 2008 CID Share Posted May 31, 2008 Could be spyware looks more like it to me than a virus

jared Posted June 2, 2008 CID Share Posted June 2, 2008 What you really should do is boot up in Safe Mode w/ Networking and run the tools tommi suggested. If that doesn't work, you may have to manually edit your registry. I will get into that later after you do that. ^^
TheArtworkGuy Posted June 2, 2008 Author CID Share Posted June 2, 2008 thank you everyone for your help! i ran all my virus scans in safe mode, and even though they found nothing it has not frozen up since. i'll keep you guys updated if it happens again. tommie gorman Posted June 17, 2008 CID Share Posted June 17, 2008 Just use common sense I always say ( as to getting infected with sites ). And it sure does make them keep running smooth. (reformatting )
AlucardHS Posted June 17, 2008 CID Share Posted June 17, 2008 Yea and how many people use or even have "Common Sense" when on the internet? See what I did there?
TheArtworkGuy Posted June 17, 2008 Author CID Share Posted June 17, 2008 i used a system restore and it was cool for a week but then froze again. i think it might be a hardware problem.
tommie gorman Posted June 17, 2008 CID Share Posted June 17, 2008 Or maybe you need to clean it with system restore off.

TheArtworkGuy Posted June 17, 2008 Author CID Share Posted June 17, 2008 i recently downloaded a directx10 video driver. come to think of it, that's just about the same time the problem started.

TheArtworkGuy Posted June 17, 2008 Author CID Share Posted June 17, 2008 it works with it i think.. radeon x1650
ghostmaster Posted June 17, 2008 CID Share Posted June 17, 2008 On a side note, 6 svchosts isn't unusual, I have 6 now, and I'm clean as a whistle. The random freezes could be caused but a lot things..
mudmanc4 Posted June 18, 2008 CID Share Posted June 18, 2008 Unless this one is not what you have, your card is not DX10 compatible. Running a DX10 driver would cause issues like you are having. or worse. http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonx1650/specs.html
