coknuck Posted October 4, 2009 CID Share Posted October 4, 2009 I got an old compaq with a DMA/ATA 33 that went south. I found a ATA 66 and and a ATA 100 real cheap. Does it matter which one I swap with the ATA 33?
mudmanc4 Posted October 4, 2009 CID Share Posted October 4, 2009 I think the 100 has faster communication possibilities ten the 66, other then this, (I think ) there pretty much the same thing, so long as the spindle speeds are the same. If by chance one of them has a cache in there, I would opt to use that.
coknuck Posted October 5, 2009 Author CID Share Posted October 5, 2009 The ATA 33 is 5400rpm and the other two are 7200rpm EDIT: Wouldn't the increase in speed be the same as replacing a 7200rpm with a 10000rpm?
starship_troopers Posted October 5, 2009 CID Share Posted October 5, 2009 from what i've researched on the net recently, it seems to boil down to cache sizes and rpm speeds, etc. for HDD's. here is a link comparing them http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/3.5-hard-drive-charts/Average-Read-Transfer-Performance,658.html i'd personally say the 7200 rpm drive will probably have a similar cache size but will work just a tad bit faster. when i upgraded an old desktop from a 5400rpm to a 7200 rpm drive i only saw a slight increase though, such as instead of a 1 minute boot it was around 45 seconds. but hey its still an increase edit sorry too many numbers...got em fixed now
coknuck Posted October 5, 2009 Author CID Share Posted October 5, 2009 Thank you for the replys! I decided to go with the Refurbished ATA 66 because it was only 6 bucks. All I'm going to do with it is download conference calls for typist. Finally found a way to make money at home.
