wbdutch Posted March 11, 2005 CID Share Posted March 11, 2005 Until today, my Comcast Cable speed results, as tested on your site, were mostly either in the high 3's or low 4's. Now they are mainly in the mid 2's. Interestingly, other test sites still record my speed in either the high 3's or low 4's. It seems to me that testmy.net may have changed some aspects of its testing procedure(?), thereby producing lower result figures. What is does appear to say, however, is that most bandwidth testing is a VERY inaccurate method of measuring speed. Who knows what is really is? php Posted March 11, 2005 CID Share Posted March 11, 2005 try running the test without the progress bar. It doesnt affect my speed, but i think there were other Comcast customers? that were having problems with it
wbdutch Posted March 11, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 11, 2005 I did try without the progress bar...and it upped my speed by a 1000! So, what does that say?
CA3LE Posted March 11, 2005 CID Share Posted March 11, 2005 that's why I have an option to remove it... it works well for most people, but some people's configuration doesn't like it
Odysseus_____ Posted March 11, 2005 CID Share Posted March 11, 2005 I'm suspecting that it's one of 2 things.... Could be that it slows down fat connections like the one I'm on, or maybe my computer here at the office is the bottleneck.. .I already know that it gets bogged down when I run the test, and maybe it's getting more lagged with having to update the progress bar... (It's a really old machine).... WDBUTCH, what kind of system are you on (CPU, memory, etc) ?

wbdutch Posted March 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 12, 2005 But I have been testing without the bar...with the bar the results readings have gone way down...which makes me wonder: What is my real speed?
CA3LE Posted March 12, 2005 CID Share Posted March 12, 2005 Well, I am pretty sure that this has to do with CPU, the script was still a little too taxing on CPU so I made a couple changes. Clear your cache and restart your browser... I had to drop some of the features of the bar to clear the problem though ~~ all that work for nothing, lol. It worked fine for me and some others... but that's because I have an athlon 3000+ ~ I think you told me your CPU was 1GHz ~ that might have been the issue. wbdutch Posted March 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 12, 2005 Yep, 1 Ghz is what I have. Cannot compete with that Athlon 3000+!!! Actually my CPU works fine for the kind of things I use my computer...except, of course, the new schemes deviced by you guys. Heehee! wbdutch Posted March 12, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 12, 2005 I did what you recommended: cleared the cache and restarted the browser. Now the results with or without the bar are pretty much the same: mostly in the high 3's.
php Posted March 12, 2005 CID Share Posted March 12, 2005 You are getting better scores even on your upload since yesterday... I made no changes to the upload test.... your connection just get better. I pay no attention to the upload, it jumps like crazy and isnt related to my download speed most of the time. My CPU is Intel P4 HT @ 3.0GHz, maybe why the progress bar didnt affect me? I was at my cousins house this evening. He has comcast, and the progress bar majorly lowered his speed(that was before you changed it CA3LE), but his computer is quite slow also. 11 Mar 2005 Download 2793 1496 kB 61590619786 php comcast.net 326FOD8EP <-- with progress bar 11 Mar 2005 Download 3195 2992 kB 61590619786 php comcast.net 0J4625E9B <-- without progress bar 11 Mar 2005 Upload 210 97 kB 61590619786 php comcast.net H2QVY708X
