just- Posted March 13, 2005 CID Share Posted March 13, 2005 You Waive Any Right To Privacy AOL quietly changes AIM terms of service America Online, Inc. has quietly made changes to the terms of service for its AIM instant messaging application. These changes to the terms of service, which only apply to users who downloaded the free AIM software on or after Feb. 5, 2004, gives AOL the right to "reproduce, display, perform, distribute, adapt and promote" all content distributed across the chat network by users. "You waive any right to privacy," is actually stated directly in the TOS. Users in our Software Forum have already started discussing these changes. thank god i dont use aim

Stank_Ho Posted March 13, 2005 CID Share Posted March 13, 2005 I can't believe AOL is still so heavily used. It's baffling. I couldn't imagine using them now. Even if it was friggin free.
php Posted March 13, 2005 CID Share Posted March 13, 2005 just for the sake of communication with some poeple, i have ICQ, AIM, Yahoo, and MSN Instant messaging, but i would never think of putting anything related to AOL on my computer. Their software is IMPOSSIBLE to completely get rid of once you install it. One time i just put their cd in the drive, i didnt even open anything, and i had shortcuts everywhere telling my to retry/reinstall AOL. BTW, i use Trillian for IM. It works great and combines MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, and IRC into ine program
just- Posted March 13, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 13, 2005 trillian ho that program its nice yeah, but only if u are a beginer user or i guess u dont use all the features, there is so much more in msn, the one i use most u cant use in trillian remote desktop sharing video call audio use all this 3 wiht frequent use and trillian doesnt support them or am i wrong? i havent used trillian for a while
php Posted March 13, 2005 CID Share Posted March 13, 2005 Trillian added audio, im not sure about video, and i cant even use remote desktop sharing (I think because of DirecWay-too-slow, but im not sure) Also, i cant use msn messenger because it tries to "auto configure" the connection, which never works for me, and you cant force connection settings. junkieXL Posted March 14, 2005 CID Share Posted March 14, 2005 I don't know of any software/chat clients that even come close to AOL/AIM in the number of security hole/exploit/bug problems over the years....& like someone stated in earlier post, the install dumps tons of files & registry entries that stick around after /uninstall :( Ebert & Ebert give AIM 2 thumbs down~!~! -JxL

bwt1953 Posted March 14, 2005 CID Share Posted March 14, 2005 AOL owns ICQ as well as AIM... they're double dippin' your computer resources. Do a speed test with AIM running and one without. My daughter runs AIM on her computer. I have to disconnect her at the router if I ever want to upload a decent size file or stay connected to my Remote Terminal Server. I opened up a LAN monitor while she was connected and counted no less than 40 connections that AIM was making to AOL servers. It is worse than a virus. php Posted March 14, 2005 CID Share Posted March 14, 2005 yup... my point exactly... trillian doesnt affect my connection at all, unlike AIM, as pointed out by bwt1953
bwt1953 Posted March 14, 2005 CID Share Posted March 14, 2005 I use MSN, and even it tries to hog bandwidth to make its own connections to the servers. The thing about AIM is that the more active on line buddies you have on your buddy list, the more connections it tries to make. I think MSN does the same. I run McAfee software firewall on all my machines in addition to using the NAT as a hardware firewall. With McAfee, as with others, I suppose, I can restrict what applications are making outbound and inbound connections. I keep them all shut down. This forces MSN to use only the pipe it has open for the MSN browser I am using.
php Posted March 14, 2005 CID Share Posted March 14, 2005 trillian uses virtually nothing. the only activity i saw from it was a single send/recieve every 30 seconds or so, and it only uses one port
TheArtworkGuy Posted March 14, 2005 CID Share Posted March 14, 2005 your saying if i send someone an image on AIM, lets say a logo for someone, and it hasn't been copyright protected yet, AOL could rip off my idea? p.s. i downloaded aim before the date you specified
bwt1953 Posted March 14, 2005 CID Share Posted March 14, 2005 That's correct. The worst part is that the TOS is also telling you that someone is looking at everything you send. Your conversations are open to monitoring and there is nothing you can do about it
php Posted March 14, 2005 CID Share Posted March 14, 2005 so sad... AOL is probably watching hundreds of conversations trying to get new ideas j/k but seriously, they have no legit reason to do that

just- Posted March 15, 2005 Author CID Share Posted March 15, 2005 yeah the latest update is AOL to Revise Terms of Service AIM privacy flap has them rethinking wording Responding to concerns that a privacy policy change allowed AOL to spy on and/or distribute AIM conversations, AOL spokesman Andrew Weinstein went into damage control mode, e-mailing dozens of outlets in an effort to calm people down. Going one step further, Eweek reports AOL will now be rewording their privacy policy, removing the phrase "You waive any right to privacy" from the TOS altogether. revise now we wait for the resilts of the revision maybe worse but i hope not
