  2. Seems like everyone (myself included) has kicked Vista under the bus, i'm curious of what your current OS (or OS's) of choice are; running MSServer 2003 R2 Enterprise here, how about you? -JxL
  3. on the Vista machine: go to network, right click and open properties...under the name of your network click on customize and then set to private. Make sure the 1st 3 settings under sharing and discovery are on. Then go to network connections and click on properties and uncheck Internet protocol version 6 and both link layer topologys. Reset your router and restart your machine and you should now be good to go. hope this helps~! -JxL
  4. Download speed more than doubled after using the 'Vista Tweaks' posted in the forums~! -JxL
  5. i will give that a try & keep you posted on the outcome many thanks! -JxL
  6. Since installing Vista Ultimate (previous OS was 2000 Pro) my comcast cable drops it's signal once a day & will not reconnect until i reboot the Linksys router (running 1 wireless connection). Rebooting the cable modem does not reset the connection. Any insight to this minor although quite annoying problem is appreciated~! router is a Wireless-G WRT54G Linksys modem is RCA DCM305 -JunkieXL
  7. you are entirely welcome - if i recall, i was high on something & listening to "In A Gadda Da Vida" at the time of photo lol indeed, it is nice to have a face to put with years of text~! Be Well- -JunkieXL

  14. that's some Smokin' speed for Comcast ballista, good stuff~! -JxL
  15. most cable modem drop-off's are the result of a blocked or delayed ICMP-Echo requests, usually caused by a firewall or router setting. Problems will include: -Difficulties with DHCP lease acquisition or renewal in cases where the DHCP server checks on the availability of IP addresses, or your presence on the network, with ICMP ping requests -Slowness of web connection setup in cases where the remote web server uses ICMP to determine the MTU of the response path. ..resulting in dropped connections. Windows XP has a built-in firewall that by default blocks ICMP Echo. You should uncheck this feature, also, if running Zonealarm or other similar program, or if using a Router- Disable the Block WAN Request feature. Hope This helps- JxL
  16. The best candidates for the Run line are applications that are in the "path" environment. The path environment is a set of folders whose names do not have to be included when entering a command. The path environment variable normally includes Windows and Windowssystem32. Not only files but also folders can be opened in the Run line. Folders contained by a folder in the path are in this category. Examples are folders within Windows and Windowssystem32 such as the folders Fonts and "Drivers". Folders that are in Documents and Settings{Current User} can also be opened in Run. If there is a 'Desktop' folder in your username tree at work, security settings are probably set tight enough to restrict acess to the 'Run' command tool. Hope this helps- JxL
  17. assuming they are on the same partition: 1. Boot to the desired version of Windows XP you want to keep-making note of the position in the boot menu. This will be important when you edit boot.ini. 2. Open a command prompt * and type "echo %windir%" without the quotes but with the %. This will give you the current Windows folder you are using. 3. From Explorer, delete the folder containing the installation you want to remove. The original install folder is usually called Windows and subsequent folders will be derivatives of Windows or Winnt. 4. Open System Properties > Advanced Tab > Startup and Recovery > Settings > Edit 5. Select the Edit button and from notepad, first backup boot.ini, by going to File; Save As and rename boot.ini. to something like boot.inibak. 6. Remove the line referencing the installation not chosen to keep. 7. Set timeout=0 so the system boots directly into Win XP (you will not get the boot menu). 8. Save As boot.ini & Exit. 9. Reboot. Let me know the outcome, ok -JxL

  21. This is a common winxp registry bug. This problem occurs when you open the Edit File Type dialog box for the Drive or File Folder registered file types. This problem occurs even if you do not create a new action, edit existing actions, or change the default action in the Edit File Type dialog box. To resolve this problem, edit the registry to set the value data for the Default string value in the registry key to none 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). 2. Locate and then click the Default value under the following keys in the registry if this problem occurs with folders: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDirectoryshell 3. Click Modify on the Edit menu. 4. Type none in the Value data box, and then click OK. 5. Quit Registry Editor. let me know the outcome ok -JxL
