hi to all- Justin here, living in the Boston metro area. i am married but probably not for much longer. no kids to my knowledge. Job: senior IT at a medium-size bio-tech company, running 50 stations & 2 servers; also 10 overseas clients accessing through remote desktop. The building is wired with a nice dual T-1. Server room has a Carrier 12,000 Btu cooler in it. I like to keep it at a frosty 60 degrees, especially in the summer. Been there since 1997. Also run 2 fileservers from home on EFNet IRC & maintain 3 channels & 2 eggdrop botnets. i employ around 15 unix shell accounts for the bots & other stuff. Not many hobbies to speak of, except my belonging to an Urban Exploration group, "UrbanAdventures"; in which we infiltrate & photograph various abandoned places such as State hospitals, asylums, missile sites, etc. A most exciting hobby it is, but has landed us in jail many times for trespassing state & federal land. Check out some of the places at Mike Dijital's site--he is the best photographer i've seen yet. http://www.dijitalphotography.com I play guitar & sometimes make home recordings. No time anymore for any type of serious bands or doing local shows. I own a 1999 Fender Big Apple Strat & a new Les Paul Custom. Have 2 drum machines & tons of other music crap i wont bore you with right now. Fav food: pizza, black cherry vanilla coke, quisp cereal. Fav drink: captain morgans, gin & tonic. Best-looking: Adriana Lima & Avril Lavigne. Music: too much to list, no country. i guess thats it... peace- JxL -

I'm still waiting for the RIAA to define "legal download" beyond the shallow reply of "as long as someone's getting paid"...who is really watching all this filesharing mess, the Feds surely; i have used a pay site for a few years www.eMusic.com and seems reasonable on the cost...unless you're an mp3 junkie and need hundreds of files a week, irc is still the best & safest place for the free goods. Just seems ridiculous that Hawaii-5-0 just might come crashing thru my window for some shared songs. oh yes one final note... (compact disc sales hit an all-time high last year......) -JxL

Verizon's westell modems and gateways and my connection
junkieXL replied to MttFrog13's topic in Networking and Hardware
i've had a westell in service at mom's house since 1998, before Verizon bought out BellAtlantic & screwed the entire DSL service 8 ways to sunday....not sure how much the westell box has changed, probably not much due to verizon's very shallow technical affairs. Try this fix , it will make a difference in that line stability: 1-- enter a dummy LAN ip into your tcp/ip settings window (198.162.1.20 for example), this works due the fact that Westell's modem actually creates a virtual network. hope this helps -JxL -
Does anyone use a signal booster for cable internet?
junkieXL replied to Blunted's topic in General Discussion
i can highly recommend the Motorola Signal Booster CATV/CBL Modem unit.... Full bandwidth bi-directional amplifier which is capable of both forward and return communications. Increases the signal up to 32 times. Worked great with RCN & even better with this crappy Comcast service i have; try it out, it will soak you about 80$ maybe less. -JxL -
some routers, do not have a set username & have just the password set to 'admin'. -JxL

Dell 4400 starts up with black screen then boots into windows xp
junkieXL replied to a topic in Networking and Hardware
Have you installed Avast antivirus lately..? & if you did, did this black screen happen after installation, as this is a known bug in the worthless freeware known as 'Avast'. It conveniently modifies the boot.ini file sometimes.... You probably have one of several virii, reginv.dll and winkey.dll trojans will cause these problemmos. Being memory-resident, they are not easy to remove. Could also be a variety of the Prorat virus... The 4400 has very limited if any BIOS settings, due to onboard everything. Try that BIOS download for sure on the previous post ...it is from Dell so that is the best bet so far. -JxL -
i was a die-hard Norton/symantec user until the latest 'security suite' which proved to be nothing more than a bloated memory-hungry load of crap. I tried Kaspersky under the recommendations of a few posts on here & it has proven superior to old Norton (mcAffee cannot even begin to compare=gypsy software). We are using the 2006 Beta from Kaspersky on a plain-jane XP SP2 box & highly recommend it. -JxL

FINALLY better than old RCN's 300 Kbps...this is on a connection i found pigtailed up in the ceiling tiles at work; seems to be a plain jane T-1 [1.5/1.5] which traces back somewhere in new jersey...my guess is it is an old Concentric or GBLX line....best thing about it? former tennant Honeywell, Inc. paid 15 years contract on it, 5 years ago....lol :evil1: peace~~~ -JxL :::.. Sorry, man.... I had the same problem with my Diamond Viper V770 card & a horrible 2400 dimension.. Gold tech support at dell said there is nothing to change on the board & there are no supported video upgrades for the dimension 2400. Dell has been boxing up more and more non-upgradeable designs...the 4600c is another pile of Dell rubbish... Soon after, the 2400 became a nice ashtray...... -JxL

This problem comes to us by way of the dead goose of the decade: -->WinXP SP2<--- The problem is caused by a Local Security Setting which was changed by Microsoft with the introduction of SP2.... "Impersonate a client after authentication"<--is the setting. By default this is disabled (unpopulated) when you install XP SP2, whereas in SP1 it was populated with Administrators group. To fix the problem you have to add yourself to the policy setting, then reboot your machine, and then you should be able to install the product normally. hope this helps-- -JxL

i have had video drivers magically uninstall themselves several times. Your Intel is known for this also. here's a few fixes to try: 1- the obvious; download latest video adapter drivers for the 915G Onboard. [version 6.14.10 or newer i believe....] 2- disable the second instance of the graphics controller: The Intel graphics controller might appear twice under 'Display Adapters' in the Device Manager. Disabling the second instance will solve several problems; unless you are actually using dual monitors of course. hope this helps -JxL

if it is a security issue, i recommend just connecting through a proxy with a stealth program such as Hide IP http://www.v7soft.net/ & here is a good IP changer: IP Address Changer http://www.iprivacytools.com/ -JxL

junkieXL replied to Indestructable's topic in General Discussion
Good stuff, thanks for the link Anything free from MS is indeed a rare bird.....& since i'm paranoid to the 10's, i wonder what kind of spyware he has wrenched into some of these progs....lol  -JxL -
I would surely try releasing & renewing the ip address on that client. -JxL
